I think my favorite “grunge” album that I own is “Above” by Mad Season. I heard Mad Season on PJ’s “Self Pollution Radio” in 1995 and loved what I heard, and eventually I saw the album at my favorite record store. They had several promo copies there and I got one for $7.99. It’s two records, three-sided album with the 4th side an etching of the Mad Season logo. In light of the fact that the median price for that album is now $159, I wish I’d bought them all! I have Vitalogy on vinyl. I got that when it was brand new at a midnight release sale at Best Buy! By that point, releasing something on vinyl was pretty novel. A year ago I got a bootleg copy of “Temple Of The Dog” on translucent green vinyl for only $4.99. Earlier this year, I got an OG copy of “Siamese Dream” on orange marbled vinyl for “only” $50, but considering it goes for median $150 that was still a steal! I graduated high school in 1992, so my teenage years were right in the thick of both the hair metal and grunge eras. I still remember the first time I heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit”!

I graduated high school in 95, the music that came out during that time was the greatest period for music since the very late sixties. Not only did we have the entire grunge era but we also had Pantera, Metallica, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Tribe Called Quest, Rage, etc, etc, etc. We had a Warehouse music store across the street from our high school and I still clearly recall when Nevermind was released I ran into a group of friends that were totally rap-only guys were buying the new Nirvana album. It was nearly 30 years ago and I will never forget that moment and the impact it has

Awesome grunge collection, I would recommend Gruntruck's Push album. Also the godfathers of grunge Melvins Houdini and Stoner Witch are great albums. Soundgarden's Telephantasm is not a must have but its cool just for the packaging and color vinyls.

Cool video. My grunge vinyl collection is pretty small, it’s just stuff that I’ve come across in the wild, OG Vitalogy is probably the most significant piece, got it for $2 at a thrift shop, as well as Ten, Ten Redux, and the Live 2lp set that I found for 2, 2, and $4 respectively. Other than that all I really have is an og 45 of Smells Like Teen Spirit I think. Happy to have them though, cool finds.

I'm 50, so I'm a bit older than you! My teenage music was "hair metal" (we called it glam or "pop" metal), so when grunge took over when I was 22, I hated it because all my metal was gone! It had nothing to do with the music! Because in the early 90's before '92 (when the take over took place), it was "blended in" with the classics and I dug it! My favorite was "Alice in chains- man in the box"! After '92 , they were the enemy! Now I'm digging it more in my older age (along with numerous other genres!

Noticed a couple of glaring omissions from your grunge collection. Please go digging in your store and grab yourself copies of Superfuzz Bigmuff by Mudhoney and Doolittle by Pixies. These 2 bands always seem to be overlooked when the history of grunge comes up. Kurt Cobain said that on Nevermind he was basically trying to " rip off the Pixies ".

Personally I think Temple of the Dog is some of the best music ever recorded. Period. No category no time stamp no genre. "Say hello to Heaven" is one of the most heart wrenching devotional letters to a friend that I have ever been exposed to. Team Grunge had a sound but the song writing was the reason it resonated with the multitude. These guys tapped into the transcendental poetry like no others since Dylan and Bono IMHO. As the L.A. scene tapped into their mom's makeup drawer The Seattle scene saw everyone dump their leather for flannel and it changed the sonic landscape forever. Pushing Forward Back is every kid's journey into adulthood. Just like you have mentioned, your parents influence stops somewhere and you push forward while looking back at what molded you. Significant poetry this band created.

My love of Grunge boarders on illogical. Never even sniffed Seattle, but that music was always coming out of my sister's room especially Nirvana. I have the Hype! movie, I have Sub Pop swag. Streaming and torrenting had me looking for Skin Yard and Gruntruck. I diverted into Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Jane's Addiction, a more broad 90's rock scope as my sweet spot musically. I regret never seeing Soungarden's comeback.

Great video of music from "my time." Rage Against the Machine really was the turning point for me, remember running out in 1992/3 and special ordering RATM S/T (Cassette) based solely on a blurb review of the album by Gene Simmons in Guitar World, calling them funky white boys rapping to typical A-B song structure. Best thing I ever learned about from Mr. Simmons!

Eddie Veddar ended up on that album by dumb luck. He came up from San Diego to audition for Pearl Jam. So he happened to be hanging out with Gossard and Ament when they went to the studio to record TOTD. However it happened, Chris heard his singing voice and they decided right there that his voice would be a great addition to the album especially in contrast to Chris’ voice.

Buying records between 87 and 91, record stores and the media DID NOT list any of this indie music as grunge. Then Nevermind was released, slipped under the radar for the 1st 6 months, then got picked up on. That changed everything, the media wanted in, and defined the 'sound' with labels like grunge. Back then you'd buy sub pop, c/z records, Amphetamine Repitile, etc records and it would all jus be considered noise rock and punk. Bands became associated with the scene just because of where they came from or the label they were signed to. Afghan Whigs are great, Love Battery, Swallow, Green River, Mono Men, Skinyard, Seaweed, Rein Sanction, so many, but they all got lumped together, despite their decidedly different sounds. As with all things as time passes, history retells a different version of the story. What doesn't change is that much of this remains great music.

I used to have a bin that was just all Pearl Jam OG’s. Green River OG’s. You name it. Sold it all to Lunchbox at their old location. Pearl Jam Italian live bootlegs too. It makes me sick seeing what they go for now.
