The feelings you have while painting are similar to what I feel a lot. We've talked a few times about my work and sadly I haven't worked on it because it's hard for me to overcome those feelings. After watching this video I feel more motivated to just overcome that mental block. Thank you for everything you do!

@@SMOENOVA I really appreciate you sharing it though! Most the time watching KZfaq videos people don't see the struggles. As an artist this can be discouraging because it feels like others are doing so well while you are struggling but when an amazing artist like you expresses how hard it can be for even yourself it is inspirational! I do this too. I've found the best thing is to just draw! Who cares if you don't like it learn from it and try again. Learn from the "failures" as artist we are the hardest on ourselves. People love my work even though I don't. It's taken me 10-12 years to realize it's ok to mess up and try again or it's ok to not like everything you just gotta do it! Keep working keep learning keep refining! We're all struggling with this part just at different times! 💪💪💪💪

Maaaaaaan! Details, story, narration, sound design - all on point! And that the canvas is a burner goes without saying. I like the Smoe that isn't afraid to show us the lows you go thru as an artist. Pushing through those times is definitely something I need to get better at myself. I have more unfinished canvases than finished ones in my studio. That being said, I'll finish one tomorrow! This video and the art and artist are brilliant!!! I get that feeling every time I paint, less when I draw or color with markers and only once in a while when I'm working with digital...but every time I paint I get that low...great time to put it away. Grab coffee, play with the kids, and then come back when I'm reactivated and have fresh eyes again. You're right about loving it and trusting that you can do it with all your heart. I loved this video, the process, the technique, the problem solving skills, the artwork, the artistry in making the video too...this was one of my favorite videos on one of my favorite channels.

I often get this low at some point. So much that I have spent time understanding it until I came across a video about neuroscience that was actually explaining the science behind ‘’lows’’ and why celebrating something big, can often follow with that low. The simplest explanation is in the chemical, when you get that high of happiness you got about what you have accomplished, you get a release of dopamine, and after that release of dopamine, is often followed by a ‘’low’’ and I think like you said, these are necessary, probably also your brain saying, you need to rest. Chemical rebalance. Enjoy your video and happy to see you didn’t edited that low. So many of us go through it. Great job man!

You articulated the process, perfectly. I go through the same emotions with my works. I also hit slumps in my creations and get plagued with doubts. Catch being, I tattoo. You cant really talk out what you go through with a client in the chair. I got to 'act' through the tough times and keep pushing. I also am a musician, and again, every show goes like this painting went for you. But the rewards of getting it done is an amazing feeling.

I’ve been an artist for over 40 years doing traditional/ digital and sculpt. I run into this all the time. I’ve gone as far as 3 years without producing anything until that feeling hits me then I go and can’t stop. But I have gone into that slump in drawings or paintings. It sucks but you have to just let it set until you’re ready to continue. If I were in your position I probably would have just took a pic of it with iPad and imported into your art app and planned out an idea on it until you were satisfied then tackled it on canvas. Anyway I rambled too long. It’s amazing and you’re an inspiration bro, I love your work and content.

When we attach a price to our work the artist holds himself accountable for perfection because if he was the client he would expect the highest level of craft from who he hired. Personally, I don't think any artist should fall in love with their work or they will become bland and never evolve into a higher artist. The mental pain is just part of the process. The feeling your feeling I think most people feel the same I find it the hardest to start , sometimes I’ll look at a blank canvas for weeks as im afraid to start as I don’t want to fail , what is silly as you can always paint over mistakes, but even knowing this it still doesn’t change how I feel and you are right it’s a very emotional thing not just to paint even to draw , for me it’s like sharing my inner self even though I don’t want to , after 40 years since I started to draw and paint I still feel like this , artist people are more in touch with our inner conciseness we create the storm inside of are mind and we must figure out how to let the sun shine , as always fantastic art work , and painting canvas isn’t always fun but as long as your happy at the end and your happy with what you’ve created, then you can release the built up emotions and relax and enjoy, 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

yes. it is the reward at the end. I do not paint for the process, i always paint for the moment, when the artwork is done. This is the high I am chasing. The best is, to sit in front of the artwork and just not believing, you painted it on your own… but to achieve this feeling you need to go through a challenging process… now some days after finishing this artwork i can say it again: it has to be hard, otherwise it would be easy. I too am an artist, but what you touched on today with the "painting low" is so relatable on so many different levels. I struggle with the completion of project at times because I overthink It. I put so much of myself into my work that I want it to be perfect. It touched me to hear such a positive person and the amazing talent you are has similarities in effort, needs motivation & encouragement at a times to keep pushing. I thought you just get to a point where it's simply automatic to produce ideas and quality work. Especially after working so hard/long to get to a certain point. It’s funny that you mention the difference in mindset between canvas and walls because I feel the same way. I walk up to a wall with very little planning and just dive in. Thanks for being real with the process on this one. All to often on KZfaq, you just see the glossy parts and not the in-between.

Late comment as usual, but what you say about the highs and lows - yes mate! I just had 2 weeks of evening editing after a dream photoshoot. I know friday when I hand the pics over, stick them on my gallery... it's done. I'll spiral down, I won't have an appetite for anything for a couple of weeks. It is real depression, I think. Seems to hit at different times to your highs and lows, but yes, you were talking about me too mate. I'm lucky it doesn't happen to me mid project or nothing would get finished. Peace and thanks for the channel

Always have the feelings. I get all amped up when I have an idea and starting is fun. Then the realization of how much work is still to go gets me bummed out then when I finish I have a split second of "yes, it's done" but a minute later I'm just critiquing everything I could have done better or whatever. I never truly have a high note ending.

23:33 thank you so much for sharing how you feel. Watching you effortlessly create beautiful art while entertaining us with laughter at the same time has personally blinded me to how tasking this process can be for you - especially someone like me who doesn't ever create art. The low you feel can't be fully understood but as i'm sure you know, we all absolutely appreciate your hard work as you push through to the end. You are such an amazing artist AND person! The painting turned out wonderful, you are wonderful.. keep smiling xx

i either feel fear with the threat of physical pain while painting, or i feel absolutely stagnated and stuck. I don't really know why that is, maybe its the fear of failing? maybe its the frustration of having the feeling im not doing enough? i really want to put my own essence into my work, but its so damn hard! i can't finish my work because for that i need to step out my comfort zone and become a stronger me, which is terrifying! me? an actual strong person who has his shit in order?! terrifying, gives me a fight or flight response. and im nervous enough by nature as it is. its absolutely exhausting. people like you and grim for example really help, it gives an insight in what you can achieve if you keep pushing! It also eases the whole process, the waterspray to fix a canvas saved me sooo many headaches for example! the positive attitude of not being afraid to be honest and trying something new is so damn motivating. its like im learning alongside you. it helps to realize that the act of painting can teach you to deal with anxiety's, to learn to make decisions and stick with them, that doing something wrong is okay because it makes you a better and smarter artist. that 'earned' self respect instead of 'taken' self respect. Big dreams, small steps! "here and now is our day of torment, here and now is our day of joy! here and now is our OPPORTUNITY! choose ye this day and say unto thine own heart, 'I AM MY OWN REDEEMER' " to me personally, that overwhelming fear and anxiety tells me i'm doing good! Im challenging myself and stepping out of my comfort zone, which will lead me to greener pastures. Thanks for being so open about it, its part of the artist lifestyle and should not be shunned. You rock!

To put in into just a few words... ;) on a commissioned piece the stress starts from day 1. If the piece isn't speaking to me, as difficult as it is, i must walk away for at least a little while even if there is a time crunch. We don't work well when we are tired and cars don't run unless they have fuel and regular maintenance. The real trick is to not allow yourself to get so low that you can't match it with the high of the finished product! We don't know good without bad, We don't know relief without a little stress. We're only human. And your art is absolutely, 100% YOU! Fan for life. Keep it up homie! Gonna get into my couch cushions to try and scrape enough together to grab one of these prints before they're gone! Big ups!

Artist block is very depressing. I never show parts of my work as it is too personal to me - I feel like some pieces are just too intimate and choose to keep them for me alone. When painting canvasses I dread messing them up and rush as a result - watching this has shown me that I need to slow down, take a break and return when Im in a more peaceful mood. This is wonderful work Smoe - really very good - have more confidence in yourself - the years of hard work are showing through

i believe that always in the middle of a creation exist that little sensation of fear of messing up the entire piece. The creator needs to found the way to keep going and let the fear away, and even play with that fear or sadness or whatever and USE it to make the piece even more unique reflecting those sensations over the wall/canvas/paper, etc... we're all humans after all isn't? I really enjoy to see you making and solving the problems or issues that art puts in front of you every time... keep it up! cheer from Argentina

Bro I get what you are saying! It can be so hard to get from start to finish without falling in and out of love with the project, commission paintings especially! It’s up and it’s down, left and right, and I honestly don’t think most people are capable of understanding the struggle.. emotionally, spiritually, and physically that it takes to pour yourself into your creation and THEN occasionally the art stares back at you and says”is this all you got!?” It’s our inner critics, yours I’m sure is a beast, tell him take a hike if you need to but also listen sometimes, your work is awesome Smoe!
