So glad l've finally found an Aussie solo girl in a car similar to mine. I have a HRV. The seats are fantastic and fold flat so no need to take any out but l love yr tips and how you set yr car up. I can fit a portaloo in mine (essential at my age) and you found the perfect spots to camp exactly how l imagined it. My mum and brother died in December and after all the dust has settled, and l can think straight l'm outta here to chill on the road! Thanks so much for the inspiration 😊

My i30 rear seats dont go completly flat do you have this issue
@MomijiShinryaku
@MomijiShinryaku 2 ай бұрын
@@Tom-lh3cj i think she removed her seats, either partially or entirely. In mine, which is the same model, you can pull a fabric tab on the front of the bottom cushion part of the seat, which lifts it up and forward so it sits against the back of the drivers seat, that creates a roughly 1.4 meter completely flat section when you drop the rear seat backs, but then the bottom cushion of the seat is now in the way. i think that piece can be unbolted but i cant say ive tried to do that

Great tips and advice!. Interestingly, I set up my 1986 Suzuki GTi Swift similar to you to solo travel the NT Gulf 12 times (including Lawn Hill in 1999) but carried a lot more stuff (in a MUCH smaller space) as I had a small sit-in kayak, heaps of fishing gear, car spares, recovery gear, tools etc and was heading to areas foreign to FWD 1.3l hatchbacks! Basic bush mechanical knowledge is a help, especially when things like your fuel tank decides to nearly rip from the floor on shocking corrugations in the middle of nowhere. I feel you should add a small yak on your racks to add to your adventure and give you more mobility plus access to free food like fish. Oh, I found the 10l collapsible water bladders perfect as as they get used you can pack them away to save space. Still got the Zook as my daily but it hasn't done the bush thing for a few years now.

2 wheel drive vehicles are very underrated. We all used them on the farms back in the day and I even own a 2 wheel drive Isuzu today. As for 4 wheel drives...been there and done it and about 90 % of the time they are not necessary unless you are doing deliberate off 4 wheel driving.

How exciting! I hope the move goes smoothly for you. A motorcycle would be such a fun way to go but I’d say definitely a car if you’re planning on camping lots or travelling longer (more space to relax, be warm, put things) good luck!
@penguinvic9892
@penguinvic9892 Жыл бұрын
I’ve done both. The small car carried a lot of gear, not quite as much as in this YT video, but still a lot of comfortable camping gear. The motorcycle forces you down to mainly essentials. But you can still carry a lot of gear. I travelled on a 750 cc motorcycle and on a small 4 stroke 250 cc, and carried the same amount. For pannier bags I used 2 ex-army surplus jute / hessian bags. On the pillion seat a folded up 2-person tent, then my sleeping bag rolled up, and then a back-pack resting on that. A small shoulder bag would rest on the fuel tank. In all this space I’d have a very small gas stove. A fry pan and some boy-scout fold up utensils. Usual camping gear like a machetes, etc. Enough food for a few days, ditto for drinking water. In the small shoulder bag would be entertainments. A couple of paperbacks, a chess set, a few handheld battery operated computer games (always took my mini dictionary with word games), pack of cards, etc, a small transistor radio (I’d recommend an emergency one with S.O.S. lighting). The thing with the motorcycle, is that it could be wheeled off the road, into a forest out of sight, for a comfortable free night’s free accommodation (make sure you leave no rubbish behind). Anyway, that’s how I did it. Everyone’s different but good luck with your trip. 😊

Thank you for making this video :) Would it be possible to show how you set up your bed? Do you tilt your seat back or forward? After that do you place some type of support platform on the seat?
@penguinvic9892
@penguinvic9892 Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what she does here with the bed, but my guess is she tilts the front seat towards the front of the car. The bed base appears to be the storage boxes. Now I have a smaller Hyundai Getz. I’m 5ft 9ins, and I’ve slept quite comfortably in mine, after I worked out a couple of things. I fold the back seats down. Put some plastic boxes in the boot area that are the height of the folded down seats. Move the front passenger seat forward to the maximum, then tilt the seat forward. In the footwell in the back of the car, I place a couple of cheap plastic stackable stools (one with the sides cut out for the hump in the middle of the car. Then I lay a very narrow child’s airbed over the top of this. The first time I did this it wasn’t exactly level, but with some old newspapers under the airbed, this solved the problem. Now for the space between the front passenger’s seat and the stools, I filled with carry bags and assorted unbreakable things. On top of the airbed I placed a very thick sleeping bag. I carry a lot of blow up cushions and pillows (as in huff and puff). All this is surprisingly comfortable as long as you sleep with your head toward the front of the car. The drawback is your body is now at window level so … tinted windows or curtains are a must … otherwise you may be mistaken for a corpse. This of course is a low tech, el cheapo method of sleeping in one’s small car, however the set up in the YT video looks very comfortable and quite professional, too. I’d also recommend a few practice nights in your own front yard before taking off on a long trip. I hope I’ve been helpful here.

Thank you, that sounds like a great project! As for a battery/solar shops like 4WD Supercentre, BCF, Outback Equipment, Supercheap Auto, Battery World or Aussie Batteries & Solar should all be able to help and probably give you some advice for the right set up for you... they may however be a bit expensive so it might be worth talking to them and seeing what’s in your price range and what they’d recommend. You could also look for a second hand panel or set up on FB marketplace or Gumtree that someone’s taking out of there own set up. That’s probably your cheaper option but just making sure they’re selling because they’re upgrading or similar reason. Hope that helps 🙌🏼

I’m not currently but they’re a good extra safety investment! Definitely at least take the two way if you’re with a few vehicles (:

Hey thank for your comment, I don’t personally but I’m regularly in contact with friends and family back home and I find there are lots of other amazing people travelling Australia right now who make great company ☺️ maybe try a smaller trip first, stay somewhere like a campground with lots of people around and see how you feel

Ms. W. walked the entire AAWT solo :-0. She did an amazing job both physically and mentally. Do some solo bushwalking and then hopefully you will not become lonesome at all.

You might want to try red lights when camping. Red lights and green for that matter, don’t attract any flying insects. Green is best but that destroys your night vision. Best is the so-called deep red led lights. Just be aware, red lights do attract humans…. Try a biolite stove for cosiness and little energy.

I’m very grateful for my dads help with my set up built but there’s a lot that actually goes into making it work and travelling on your own. I hope we can inspire anyone to get on the road 💛

@@LauraWaddellTravel absolutely! You're out there doing the thing which some people with "bigger/better" setups don't push themselves to do. Super admire you!
