For me, it was 1964, age 10, visiting my relatives’ cabin, when I got to read a small pile of my cousin’s DC Comics. Specifically, Justice League’s Crisis on Earth Three, The Atom in Revenge of The Atom’s Uniform, and Superman Under A Red Sun. I was completely captivated by the exciting stories and I did a hard switch from Richie Rich and Casper over to the DC line.

Looking back on it, those annual two part JLA/JSA team-ups were the “big events” of their day.

When I was growing up I remember the price of comic books just skyrocketing. I didn't mind paying less than a dollar or a dollar for a comic book, but when it went up to $1.50 to $1.75 per issue, I got really annoyed. Like you were saying, I only had a certain budget for comic books as a kid. Adding to that, DC kind of lost me with the storyline when they killed Superman and turned him into several different characters with his powers split up. I always loved Batman and The Flash though.

I doubt any kids are buying comics these days. It's a market aimed at middle-aged "kids."

I loved the DC War comics.... SGT. ROCK, The Haunted Tank, The Unknown Soldier! Liked Jonah Hex as well. Liked some of the others..... occasionally. But I was mostly a Marvel guy. I got out of comics at the right time.... mid 80s.

That was a fun video. It's great to hear someone's first introduction to certain comics. It reminds me of the late 60s Batman TV show, and the early 70s Super Friends when I found these characters. It made me laugh when you said you didn't like Superboy, since reading reprint digests of Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes was the first regular DC reading I did in the 70s, and still among my favorites. 😀

@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Lol! I think we all did. The villains were legitimately frightening to a young child (especially the Mad Hatter, of all people, for me). It was only with repeated viewings in reruns that the realization hit, "Hey, all these guys are actually kind of silly." 😀

Loved Sgt Rock as a kid! I think that was one of the first ones I read. I agree about Ordway, really good art. Flash is one of my favs as well…. Flash and GL are my two favorite DC characters.

Yes, a DC War omnibus, Westerns omnibus and many more would be great. Distribution of DC in the UK was terrible for me, perhaps elsewhere had more but the selection was very poor other than the 100 Page Giants in the 70s. I suppose because of that I was more hooked on Marvel than DC, though I enjoyed the Warren ones (weirdly, they were often distributed to my local shops). Dark Knight was a favourite, bought it (along with Daredevil) when it came out. Loved those Man of Steel as well. Love the Silver Age Flash omnis but I also like the old Golden Age Flash ones as well. Weirdly we had 100s of 50s and 60s DC comics in our shops during the 70s so I knew a lot more of the old Batman / Metal Men etc. The problem is definitely the price, $5 is pretty crazy, I haven't bought a single issue for ages ... so I stick to the TPBs as well and also Marvel Unlimited for the digital recent material. Endless first issues don't help either. I agree that is definitely Superman's strength !

Some current comics run at $10. That's insane. Who's the market for that? Middle aged readers with disposable income, or those who justify it by saying they're going to get their kids to read them. I wonder if the market will price itself out of existence.

@@marsrock316 Steep I think even for some middle aged readers, $10 etc is just too much ... and there are just so many other things to do as well

I keep thinking that the single, floppy issues will die out and be replaced. Perhaps with a graphic novel format series that is printed every 2-3 months perhaps? I have no idea really but it will be interesting to see.
@AndrewBuckleBookReviews
@AndrewBuckleBookReviews 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 I would imagine so, I can't see them generating single issues forever in the same way. Perhaps specials but graphic novels must be the way to go such as the Ed Brubaker Graphic novels etc. Something with extras, nice quality etc instead of a throwaway comic. And yet you have people buying 50 dollar variant comics with different artists as collector items ... that totally baffles me (see them at comic marts , I wonder if they sell ?). At comic marts, see everyone buying the floppies at about 1/6th of the original price (a few months later), can't see how an industry can work in that way,

The last "Superman" comic I read, was a British black and white reprint, about the time of my fourteenth birthday. The best "Batman" comic I read, was the "Killing Joke" graphic novel by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, although the Batman and Joker characters failed to excite me [despite the Joker's origin story being quite good], so even that one I didn't think was particularly good. "Swamp Thing" with Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, was the first DC comic I got after only reading Marvels for five years. That was really very good or excellent.

DC for me meant The House of Mystery, The House of Secrets, and The Witching Hour. Later I got into The Sandman and other Vertigo titles. I especially like Sandman Mystery Theatre.

Hey Michael. Sgt. Rock is available in the DC Archives, but the hardcover is pricey, at least at Amazon. It's also available in the DC Showcase editions, as Our Army at War and much lower cost.

The last time I looked those Showcase editions were going for high prices as well. I keep thinking DC will come to their senses and print an omnibus. They probably won’t!

@@michaelk.vaughan8617 I wish DC had the equivalent to Marvel's Epic line. I'm an old-school Marvelite, but I definitely want to go back and explore the DC universe from the good old days (i.e. the days before mainstream comics became a platform where pushing an agenda trumped good storytelling.) Btw, I know you're both a classics and comics reader: Have you read Age of Bronze (Image Comics)?

Oh yes, The Adventures of Superman, every week day like a rabid religion! But I was a Marvel kid also, however my favorite hero has and will always be BATMAN! I am glad we grew up in the time we did my friend! .....Jonah Hex brought me back to DC titles. An interesting topic would be the old Dell/Gold Key titles at that time, The Phantom, Magnus, Doctor Solar, Space Family Robinson, Tarzan.....best covers in comic history! Of course that's just my opinion. LOL!

Never heard of your guy Sgt Rock… I am big on DC. The modern art for DC is amazing. Though I only just became aware of how closely the DC lot represent the Greek Gods. I love me some space cops. So GL is a big one for me. Waaaaay under valued in films so far. Also have a love of Question. In fact I love the hero Question so much I would even watch a CW adaptation… probably.🤷‍♂️
