Inclusion Gloucestershire is a user-led disability organisation based in the South West. We aim to capture the voice of people who all too frequently can be excluded.
Gloucestershire County Council Learning Disability Team commissioned Inclusion Gloucestershire to make a film about supported living.
The film uses disabled and non-disabled actors to tell the story of someone making the transition into supported living and how they made that journey.
If you would like more information about supported living, or have had a different experience from what we have shown in the film, speak to your support planner or support provider. Or call Gloucestershire City Council Adult Helpdesk: (01452) 426868.

Hello all if you’re reading this. I work with people with developmental disabilities. I’ve been in the community for about 5 years. I absolutely love it! Your sons, daughters, sisters, brother ect. It’s literally a pleasure to work your friends and family. Know that their are genuine people in this world who love this community & will make sure they’re are taken care of. With out them I will not have a job. Currently I am a supervisor of a house of 7 people & those are literally my babies lol I will go above & beyond for anyone in the community. When you get to know individuals with disabilities you see that they’re exactly like everyone else with dreams, goals, and plans. Sorry for the ramble lol ❤❤

I have a son 28 years old and he has autism. I so scared of when i pass . He definitely can't live alone but would need to help. He doesn't understand life or money and I love him so much it scares me so much.

I can only imagine the anguish. Do you have family that can help him or set up some trust funds for him? Take care.

Try getting him settled in a reputable group home setting as you can..you can watch him grow in a different environment and see if he can settle in. You can support him in this way. This way it might give you some peace of mind should you not he around forever.

The foster home my disabled brother in law lives in currently gives him no freedom. Within days of moving in he wanted out. Most of the homes like this put disabled people through hell.

I have autism spectrum disorders and personally hate group homes myself, but this looks better than those that exist in America. Here, group homes are like prisons that don't lock people up but restrict them significantly, and you can still see the outside but not allowed to venture out, and it's easy to escape because staff don't even do anything and literally sleep on the job. That's what a group home is in the United States. This is only the first British group home I've ever seen but looks better than American group homes. If you want a group home, don't stay in the United States. The Disability System here is a prison and an authoritarian government. I don't know how group homes are in other countries are, but I still wouldn't live in one anywhere else in the world either.

Here in London they have to use a communal laundry. Various housing associations run these schemes. The accommodation is usually like a bedsit with a wet room. U r lucky if u get a bath (tub) with shower hose. Then repairs take ages to be done and there is nowhere to wash if the (s head goes). It is like any other business. They have to make a profit thro the rent which is covered by housing benefit from councils etc funded by the government. Welfare state claiments are automatically entitled to this. They either pay bills or if the accommodation is shared -: a weekly or monthly service charge. That's how it works in England, Britain.

We can all have opinions, but we need to look at the bigger picture. These young people need support whilst living an independent life. We wouldn't like these lovely people to be isolated and struggling. I, as a parent of a young female adult, would like her to be able to have the freedom of choice and ability to access employment and education and carry out activities of daily living. I know she won't be able to manage all these on her own. This is why I think supported living is great. My daughter will have the opportunity to be supported in learning new skills and perfecting the skills she has gained. It will give me peace of mind knowing that she is happy, safe, and secure while I'm still here and beyond.
