Thank you so much for this video. This gives me major encouragement to continue paying off debt so I can eventually purchase land and a home for my 2 horses and 3 cats. ❤

That's definitely on the cheaper end for hay and vet costs. Crazy how much prices differ depending on where you live.

That was my first thought, too! I’m in San Diego County, California, and my feed and vet costs are much higher, and I don’t have the lush green grass for grazing to help.🤷🏻‍♀️

@@EmmaVeelle Awww 💕 Thank you for saying that! Ironically I didn't know anything about horses when I got her but I love animals so much and treated her as good (OK probably better lol) than a family member. I made plenty of mistakes like letting her be obese for a time but I kept learning. I think I was largely lucky and my horse was blessed with good genetics (7/8 Arabian and 1/8 Quarter Horse and I hear Arabs often live a long time). I've definitely learned a ton though and it's very helpful now that I got my latest rescue--an OTTB that had been nearly starved to death. He has ended up costing a lot more than I planned on with 2 unexpected surgeries the very 1st week I got him but he went from a skeleton to being happy and healthy. Thank you for your reply to my comment! 💜

Good video! I was thinking that the weed killer might be affecting your horses health. Eating the grass and dead weeds would mean that they are also eating the weed killer. The fact that you have to give your horses probiotics might be because of their exposure to weed killer causing harm to their health and gut microbiome, just a thought!

In Montreal Canada: outdoor board starts at 550$ and most are 750$/month. Ferrier 50$/horse. Vet visit with annual shots 250$ teeth are extra 115$. Feed is 124$ for a bag (2 months)...

Also, expenses depend on where you live too. Here in Alaska, the horses don't get as much graze time as they down in the lower 48, and we have a LOT of glacier silt, which wears their teeth down faster. I have to spend roughly 400 a month on alfalfa and Timothy for my boy, his farrier trips run my 50, and dentist is 60. I also have to pay a travel fee for my vet to come out cuz I don't have a trailer yet(those are really hard to come by up here)and that adds another 150 on top of the bill. I'm getting ready to move him to my own property, but right now, I'm paying 110 a week for board and the previous place I boarded it was 425 for self care(fed in the morning) and 975 for full care(feed morning and night and clean stall and run). My boy gets California Trace supplements and that costs me about 100 for the biggest bag which usually lasts about 6 months(he's a small horse.), and I'm about to add a vitamin e supplement which will run me about 30-50 a bag depending on how big I buy . So remember boys and girls, the biggest thing is location, location, location.

Ya same here in Canada. At least 200$+ of hay each month. Our grass is too sweet also.

Thank you for this video. We only have one horse but she's pasture boarded, though we fortunately can work that cost off by doing barn chores. Our board covers feed as well. Her hoof trims cost 65.00 and so far, only the annual vet visit (knock on wood). Our major expenses so far have been getting a trailer and the cost of a trainer since both she and my girls are "green" -- I definitely would not have chosen a green horse for them but they fell in love with her and they work very hard to take care of her.

I really appreciate all these videos you put out, thank you! I started watching your channel before purchasing my rescue horse, and purchased your two online courses, December 2021. (Which are awesome! Finished one and mid the other.) I budget every year for animal care and food, and, like you, have my own land (3 acres sectioned off for rotational grazing and 2 wooded acres). Out of curiosity, how do you handle manure in the pastures?

Oats from the supermarket would get expensive. $1 on the wholesale market will get you around 22 ounces if you buy by the hundredweight.

It would be helpful to know what state you're in. I live in Western Washington and in my area its about $25-30 for a square bale of hay and the farrier is 60 per horse. Plus land in general is super expensive, so buying a good sized property where you have the room to have the horse graze most of the year would be a couple million dollars. Boarding a horse, on average here, runs about 300-900 depending on if you want full care or not and if the horse is stabled at night or not. Expenses can vary a lot depending on location, so that is helpful information to include.

Kind of off topic, but I was wondering when you were talking about Ruach's gelding cost: Does anything bad happen if you don't geld your horses? Or any animal for that matter? Aside from potential behavior issues, I guess. I know someone who has a big dog with an avg. lifespan of 10-12 years, but the dog is over that age and still acting like a puppy. He is not castrated, and some light research on the topic has taught us that the reproductive system contributes hormones that help other systems stay healthy, such as keeping strong joints and overall fitness.

I’m out in Washington state. Quite a bit more expensive out here. I live on 5 and try to do it myself. Now 70 it’s getting to be a pain. I’d like to Move to a cheap place so I could afford board. BUT I am picky abt how I take care of my horses!

Unfortunately, so many people with just a smidgen of land, keep their horses on the cheap - as if they are yard dogs - and thus don't give them the proactive care you provide to keep them healthy. I see horses all the time that are clearly underweight because they aren't getting the supplemental feed they need (without adequate grass). I would say VERY few realistically look into it much before buying their first horse. I mean, getting a new puppy is a major commitment - but getting a HORSE...

I apreciate you keep a rescue horse, but most of the times the have health problems, and that's never cheap. Horses are beautiful but cost a lot of money. Horseriding cost more than have and buy a car. Do you also let do analise the hay on sugar content?😊

as a totally blind person, do you know how expensive it might be for me to take care of a guide horse per month? As in a small, miniature horse being used as a guide animal instead of a dog. I prefer horses over dogs. I had bad experiences with dogs as a child.

You are very good but one thing you do is very WRONG:patting horses as "good horse". Horses hate patting, slapping - they take it but it hurts and they hate it. The horse dislikes being patted, it enjoys being stroked and scratched. That is it. This I have learned from the best in my long life.
