@RaethFennec2 жыл бұрын
I watched all the videos and tutorials and tried the wall thing but it never worked for me. What DID work was getting BAD intonation and fixing it... I'd put my finger down, realize I was sharp/flat, and just kinda tilt or roll my finger in the direction to bring it into tune. By mistake, a few times it sounded good when I did it because I was quick on the draw (I knew the instant my finger started descending it was too high/low.) So I started intentionally going a little out of intonation and then rolling down into tune. Or vice versa... start out right and then roll out of tune a little toward the next note. Once that got comfortable, I had essentially taught myself to 1: use less pressure on the string, 2: keep my thumb below the neck of the violin loose and relaxed and 3: by thinking about moving my hand, cause my wrist and other fingers to become limber and ready to move instead of locking up. From there, I was able to just start going for a little 'accent' vibrato at the start or end of a note. I started practicing songs by doing a little accent wiggle on every single note I played. Gradually, especially when I practiced for 1-2 straight hours and my hand started to get tired, that tiredness brought a type of relaxation and I started to actually hear proper vibrato emerge. It still took time to sculpt that into actual vibrato. I just worked on sustaining a smooth wave-like motion with my hand as much as I could, all the time until finally I was able to control the speed and vibrato through even long notes without stopping. But now that I have the physical 'skill' for it, I can intuitively understand the instructions for how to do it correctly. I mean, I'm still terrible at it, but at least I can do it and it sounds way better and opened up a whole world of option for adding musicality to my playing. Now I'm just working on keeping that motion fluid and continuous between notes and getting better at doing it with my pinky finger. Oh, how it never ends...

Omg, I'm struggling to learn vibrato so much! I've been learning to do vibrato for a couple of months now and I'm slowly getting it but after a few notes, my hand/wrist just goes "nope!" and I lose the vibrato haha... I'm getting better and better with each practice but man, it's slow going and it really is harder than it looks
@hannahpeng61902 жыл бұрын
If you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly. 🐝
@hannahpeng61902 жыл бұрын
But as an actual tip, I do seriously recommend practicing vibrato very slowly by rocking your wrist/arm back and forth with a finger down on the fingerboard. The note will sound like it’s going up and down in pitch and it won’t sound pretty, but going super slowly and breaking the movement down really helps. Practice doing these rocking motions and slowly speed it up as you get better at it. This helps you get into the motion of vibrato. You can experiment with the range and speed of the vibrations, which changes the type of vibrato that you will have (wide, narrow, fast, slow). I don’t know if this helps or not but this is how my teacher taught vibrato. Good luck! Edit: keep your arm relaxed, as tense muscles freeze up vibrato. If anyone has any other tips feel free to share haha
@PolkaSunia2 жыл бұрын
@@hannahpeng6190 thanks for the tip! Yep, my teacher is making me go slowly and then increase the speed a little and then slow down again. I'm mainly working on the A string and trying with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fingers. Slow and steady wins the race with this and I do see progress, it's just really slow and my left hand has a hard time stayed relaxed since it had the tendency to stiffen which makes me lose the vibrato or ends up shaking the violin instead
@autk2 жыл бұрын
Concert pianist trained at Juliard told me one time when I was blazing through some scales on electric guitar when in my teens with her brother on the drums...."both of you need to slow down, ..if you cannot play those lines slowly, then you aren't playing them cleanly fast, get it perfect slowly first, then speed it up gradually "...I took that to heart and it changed my playing more than any lesson I ever had
@kaitlin04282 жыл бұрын
I agree with what everyone said: practice slowly, then speed up. My teacher told me to think of it like knocking on a door. Practice that motion without the violin then try to incorporate that into your practice. Most importantly, know it takes a lot of time. Many months or even years to be able to do it well. Don’t get too frustrated and stay patient. I’m glad you’re seeing improvements; keep it up!! 💗💗

@ericbess59172 жыл бұрын
I started playing violin in 6th grade. I'm now over 50 and it was only a few years ago that I finally figured out vibrato. The thing that helped me the most was learning that you have to hold the violin with your shoulder and your chin, not your hand. Your hand provides support, but if you are gripping the violin, you don't have the flexibility in your wrist to be able to vibrato. Practice holding the violin without touching it with your hand. Maybe that will help, maybe not, but it's worth trying.
@MsEvelynRivera2 жыл бұрын
try vibrato with a slow movement at first! "roll" your finger back and forth on the note, making the sound alternate between flatter and sharper, then slowly increase the speed of the motion :) keep practicing that and you'll get it in no time!

@bobdathang32292 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that there are two types of vibrato: arm vibrato and wrist vibrato. Both are correct, but generally, wrist vibrato is preferred since there is overall less tension in the arm. An important part about wrist vibrato is to keep your hand relaxed. Make sure you aren't keeping your violin in place with your hand, and that you can hold it with only your shoulder and chin. If you don't have a shoulder rest, get one, since it will help with this. Practice doing 'vibrato' on different surfaces to get the overall motion. Do it on your right arm, a nearby table etc. For wrist vibrato, keep your arm still, and just move your wrist from side to side slightly, kind of like you're waving at someone. Once you feel accustomed to the motion, practicing on different surfaces, try it on your violin. *this is how I remember learning vibrato. Idk if it'll work for you, or if my explanation was clear enough though 😅
