here is some extra advice from a bio & chem HL student (about to go into ib2): FIRST OFF try to finish your ia's/ee's in your first year. this will help you MASSIVELY and truly give you a lot of time to purely focus on that. have a sheet with all of the official assignments so you can keep track of what you have left. finish majority of CAS in year 1 to save yourself a lot of stress, and write your reflections after you've done an experience. also make your CAS your social life; as in go volunteer with your friends & work out with them & paint with them. stuff like that. for chem and bio i would HIGHLY recommend to consistently study everything. especially in chem. like do past papers and go over the concepts youve taken every week. this is CRUCIAL. and for chemistry make sure to know how the ib wants you to think and answer the questions. read over the markscheme and make sure to hit all the points and take big notice to the command terms (applies for all subjects). past papers are your best friend

OH ALSO TOK IS ALL ABOUT MINDSET AS CORNY AS THAT SOUNDS. like yeah it might be boring but stop dwelling on that and youll be ok. personally i really enjoyed TOK but that was also bc i had a good teacher. but having a good mindset is important. and yeah time management is key. best of luck💞

Lol In my old school, we can choose either VCE(ATAR)( Australian version of SAT) or IB. The median average score of IB is 7~8 points greater than VCE. IB is easier to get a higher score because VCE system is relative to how other people do and conversion rate from IB to ATAR are great so IB are easier to get higher ATAR but when some Australian university look at GAT for IB students to assess their consistency throughout their final year, as IB score is heavily based on final exams.

I finished IB this year too and let me just say I’m glad I’ll never have to do it ever again😂 also tip for IB students in America: I strongly recommend not to do the full diploma unless you want to study abroad. The diploma itself doesn’t have much weight in American colleges, they really only care about what classes you take. A lot of my classmates and I agree that going for the full diploma was a waste of time, and would just recommend focusing on doing IB classes without the extra requirements for the diploma. Also colleges tend to favor AP classes when it comes to credit ( that’s why a lot of IB students are extra bitter lmao, but of course it could depend on your college) One thing about IB though is that students who have done the classes/ diploma tend to think college is easier, because we’re used to writing a lot and the work load is very similar. Hopefully this was helpful!

@Princesspov
@Princesspov 4 жыл бұрын
And how many IB classes do you need to take to receive the certificate
@heyitsa9511
@heyitsa9511 4 жыл бұрын
ThePrincess so if you don’t wanna do the IB diploma, you can just take IB classes. This means that you can still receive IB credit but you just won’t get the diploma. For the diploma, there are specific class requirements and extra activities you need to do. Hannah actually explained it really well. For the diploma, you need 3 SL classes ( which are IB classes that are at a standard level) and three HL classes, (IB classes that are higher level). You also have to take TOK which is a sort of philosophy class and you have to take a language up to IB level completion. Additionally, you’ll have to receive CAS hours, which are hours in Creativity, activity, and Service ( I think you need 50 hours for each strand in total). You also have to write a 4000 word essay as Hannah explained. In order to receive the diploma you have to score get a certain amount of points that take into account your course work, IB exams, and CAS hours. The difference between the diploma and not doing the diploma are all the extra stuff. So basically not doing the diploma just means doing IB classes and doing the diploma means doing IB classes plus a bunch of extra stuff.
@heyitsa9511
@heyitsa9511 4 жыл бұрын
Also, you get the diploma in July after you graduate high school and students are typically already accepted into college before they finish the diploma, so the diploma itself really doesn’t matter, it’s just that some schools in Europe require the full diploma work in order to for attendance. But if you want to do the full diploma to push yourself I say go for it! But if you’re doing it only for colleges then it won’t make that big of a difference to most schools (in America). Like I said, colleges really only look at specific classes,not the diploma. I will say the IB diploma made me get involved in many extracurricular that I normally wouldn’t do, so in that sense it forced me to get more involved in my community which was nice!

As an American IB student (class of 2015), I very much appreciated that course selection and IB grades were not as important to college... ahem, UNI... applications. I saw some of the score and subject requirements that European universities had, and appreciated not having to deal with that. The stake of those exams was literally just getting the IB Diploma (which was basically just an extra piece of paper with major symbolic significance). The limiting factor in course selection more ended up being availability (there were a limited number of courses, and we were pretty much pigeonholed into English HL/LangB SL/History HL). It's been expanded since I graduated, but the school's IB classes also got significantly bigger during that time. Math HL was horrific, but turned out to be quite helpful when dealing with collegiate math courses. Music HL was great (yes I did four HLs - I wanted Math SL but was forced into either HL or Studies). Chemistry SL was a solid course that got one of my IB exams done in junior year. As an American, the fall of grade 12 is naturally going to be brutal - the teachers tried to go easy a bit, but we were balancing 4-6 IB subjects with TOK, getting the EE done, and our college applications. And there were some IAs in there as well. Fall of grade 11 can be rough just from getting used to the increased difficulty, and spring from the increased number of IAs plus TOK, but Fall of grade 12 is the really brutal part. Spring of grade 12 really wasn't that bad, as there were a bunch of mock papers and review built in so that we really were spending a lot of time on dedicated exam prep even within class (I say this as someone who had five two year courses). Regarding CAS, I tend to agree with your general approach - one committed activity for the C and A (choir for the former in my case, sports for the latter) and a bunch of activities pieced together to make 50 hours for the S. As far as TOK, I spent a whole semester inevitably thinking of it as "that class right before my chorus elective". It had its cool points, and the presentation in particular was fun, but it was definitely a bit of a bore at times. Especially with it being first thing in the morning. The point of picking niche topics is solid. HL History is underrated in the hardest subject debate for the simple reason of the sheer amount of content you need to learn and the sheer number of essays. Three essays in two and a half hours is no joke, and not just for the physical reasons of your hand getting really sore. I didn't take an HL science, so I cannot comment on them, but HL Mathematics deserved the reputation it had (though the IB math courses have been redesigned since when I was an IB DP Candidate). Your scores blew mine out of the water - I got my diploma, but I definitely did not beat the median number of points. Frankly, I would be surprised if any of my classmates touched your scores. But getting a 6 or a 7 isn't as crucial in the US as it is elsewhere. US Colleges generally give credit for HLs with a 5, but often do not take SLs - I literally had an admissions person tell me that they consider IB SL courses equal to Honors. I am sure that I am not the only one here to realize how much of a joke that idea is.

I went for 2 years, got a lot of high school done, got my AP credits, and went on to do dual enrollment on the traditional side of school. Doing it for two years allows you to complete a lot of high school (depending on the school) so you can focus on other things like more college credits. Getting out of an academic program doesn’t mean you’re stupid, it just means it wasn’t for you. I didn’t fit in with “IB kids”, all my friends were traditional b/c that’s where I fit in, and I just overall wasn’t happy. So don’t feel too bad if you’re like me🤷🏽‍♀️.

I have been studying in ib program for over 5 years now, I have been through pyp and myp. Right now I'm on my last year of myp, next year I will be joining in dp. Thank you so much for the advice, pretty much everything u said is true. Ib really value balance and critical thinking, although it is tough, they really help you prepare for the real world, teach you how to deal with problems, how to analyse, organize and communicate with people. Good luck to everyone else who is going to start dp!! ❤️ ❤️

I’m doing the IB next year at college (last two years of high school in the UK). Literally no one does it here, I think 3% of our school cohort does it. My friends think I’m insane cause it’s harder than our usual A-levels. Im planning on applying to Cambridge so I need 41 points to get in which is so hard. Im doing HL maths chemistry physics and SL English German and psychology. I’m actually so excited though because it’s so different from the ‘normal’ school qualifications. Edit: she just said HL maths chemistry and physics are the hardest lol I’m torturing myself

As someone who did A levels and really struggled picking three or four, I very envious of peeps who got to do way more subjects. Ended up doing maths, physics nd history + EPQ and gold dofe nd a few other things but I would've loved to do french and some form of classics

Something else about EE, is that once I had picked my subject (Psychology which I don't actually take) if your EE doesn't quite match the subject (mine was the personalisation of care for autistic patients in public health systems) it doesn't really matter, there are a lot of different aspects which you cannot fit into a certain subject.

i was in the IB MYP (Middle Years Program: so 6th grade through sophomore year/10th grade) and almost went through with the program. I didn't do it mostly because the people at my school were kind of toxic and i went to a really small school so if you're in the IB diploma program (at my high school) you're surrounded by the same people for all four years of high school. truly didnt want to be around fake people and surrounded by people who talked about me behind my back. so i decided to drop out so that i could focus on my mental health and physical health because i had to have back surgery junior year so that would have really hurt school wise with IB. i dont regret my decision at all i just graduated high school with my associates in arts in health science! but i hope that people who are deciding to go through with this program enjoy it and never have to deal with the people i did!
