I love the title being a literal spoiler for the show's final and biggest twist - and still nobody can see it coming. The author must've been experiencing the exact type of intense glee I live my life longing for.

I recently started watching angel beats and finished it within two days, at first I thought it would be a normal fantasy but towards episode 7 and 12 I started crying out of nowhere, I'm not sure if it's because the characters were sharing their favorite things they wish they did before they died and were taken to the afterlife and they got reincarnated, or the fact that otonashi was left all alone in the school after confessing his love for kanade after she disappeared, I know that after the end credits they all live again but man it left me in river of tears.

One of the many reasons why I love Angel beats some much is the pure concept of it. Waking up in a unknown environment and not being able to remember who you where is fighting. And just later on to learn that your actual dead in purgatory and can't move on from it. BTW Love the work Totaraum

The anime was originally planned as a double season but got cut short due to budget reasons. That's why it felt so rushed sometimes. Also the band GirDeMo was a huge nod to K-On! as the author of the original manga stated. That's why the singers are named Iwasawa and Yui (like Hirasawa Yui). Also Yui is playing a red Gibson SG like the one the HTT sold on Sawakos behest in season two.
@Totaraum3 жыл бұрын
That K-On! tidbit is super interesting. I made the connections between the two myself but I never imagined they did it on purpose

This show was a mixed bag for me. The shadows, the programmer, Yuri's backstory, the rushed obliteration of pretty much everyone near the end and even the graduation scene, none of it worked for me. But Iwasawa's episode, Yui, the signing of the organ donor cards, Kanade/Otonashi, the ending (mostly), and the chemistry/comedy between the characters generally were all really great. Kanade having Otonashi's heart struck a particular chord with me because as a kid my I used to like watching chick flicks with my mom and Return to Me was a favorite. Unfortunately when I think about Angel Beats my first thought is of missed potential. Though my second is of Iwasawa belting out the lyrics of My Song with all that emotion! I get chills just thinking about it.

When I tried to watch this a few months earlier, my level of empathy was like Angel's, which means, almost non-existent if it meant the fulfillment of duty and purpose: -I saw Yuri as a mere warmonger, as she would risk the universe's integrity by facing God, even though it could have been the Devil who arranged for the unfairness that befell her life and family; -I did not judge Angel's attack on the Ootanashi. He was dead and he asked for proof of it. She delivered, because that's her job; -I'm not sure I can be so forgiving towards the hypnotist. He was neglected, I get it. But steal someone's identity like that just to get the love of someone who probably doesn't even deserve it... This one I'll admit I refrain from passing on active judgement. It feels too unfair for me to do it, given I do not know that kind of neglect; -And, I saw the humans' actions in resisting erasure as futile. That was the purgatory. They would either be reincarnated or ascend. That's how it works both in the East and West. All they had to do was to either follow rules or fulfill their final wish. Yuri I might even understand why she couldn't do neither, because even in my scenario, I imagine she would need not to be at peace if she hoped to one day face the Devil. My final veredict... This show was perfect. And I, am an idiot who could never deserve to have my sinful eyes gaze upon this wholesome beauty. Because, I spent too much time with my routine of overseeing. My level of human concern and care is very minimal at worst and lowly average at best. I do have one complaint though. It should have been longer. Seriously ? 12 episodes ? For a show this complex with such 3 dimensional characters ?

Thanks for this video. Angel Beats is far, far, from being an A-list anime and has many faults (if only it had been given the budget for double the number of episodes!), but it certainly has some fantastic elements that I think you've done a great job of highlighting. It's very clear that Maeda Jun had a very in depth and detailed story for this, but he didnt get the chance to fully express all of those ideas in this short story. Later when he had the chance of making that 6 game long visual novel series, he ended up being hospitalized after the first one released. By the time he had recovered the project had been put on hold indefinitely and has never been mentioned since. It was never officially canceled, but after 8 years I think it's safe to say we won't ever see the full story he had. It's a shame that a story with such potential will never be fully expressed.

I always liked this show. Good message/themes, fun cast. I always have to discount marks because some things never felt fully fleshed out. That's not necessarily the fault of the show or the people who created it, but I always wonder what would have happened if they could have better conveyed they cut some content to better focus on the most important parts. At some point you have to realize you're limited by your episode count and shape your story to be properly told in the time you have. I look at 11 episode shows that I love - Ping Pong, The Tatami Galaxy, and AnoHana (I understand if I get hate for putting this one above Angel Beats, but it's an example of a show that does a lot with only 11 episodes) - that accomplish everything they set out to do. Granted, it has been a LONG time since I watched Angel Beats. It's possible that I'm misremebering the little bit of frustration I had with the show, or that it was unfounded. Maybe I would be more fond of it on a rewatch. Either way, great video once again. Liked, commented, and recommended to the weebs I know. Keep up the quality content!

True, there was a lot that they could've expanded on. I perfectly understand anyone who didn't like its quick pace. They definitely shot for the moon when it came to the amount of content they wanted to cram into this show, but personally I think it worked out well. It might be worth it to re-watch so you can reevaluate those muddy feelings, I'd look forward to hearing what you have to think afterwards. Also, thank you! I'm super grateful for the support

I saw a video analysing this show... It's official. I'm a worthless piece of garbage who couldn't appreciate beauty, even if it donated its heart to my undeserving body ! Best case scenario, I'm gonna end up in a purgatory similar to the anime's. Worst case... I'm gonna end up either in Hell or erased without ever ascending to a higher form.

@@Totaraum sorry for the drama. It's just, I already don't think I'm the best person in the world. And when I think I have poor taste in things... Being a person of good taste and culture is a thing I pride myself of a lot. That belief is something that brings me confort for some reason. So when I don't appreciate something as beautiful as "Angel Beats"... I can't explain it, but it's like I'm violating some fundamental rule... Or a trait of my own. Am I the only one that find this show extremely boring? The plot is just a huge mass, the characters are boring (just writing a sad story for a character doesn’t make the character good), it is rushed, the only good things I can say is that the music is amazing and the comedy is pretty good
@Totaraum3 жыл бұрын
Hey, I totally get where you're coming from with this show, but I'll do my best to explain why I think differently. The plot does drag you in a lot of different directions throughout its short length but I think the constant flow of objectives was fine and it kept the show from growing stale. I especially liked how each plot point fed into the next by adding more context to characters and the world. When it comes to the characters, I agree that they aren't as lovable as tons of characters from other shows I enjoy. I do think they do their job just fine though. Like you said, the comedy was pretty good and characters like Yuri and Hinata were likeable to me because of their charisma. About the sad stories, though, I believe Angel Beats is far from a sad for the sake of being sad show. The reason every character has a tragic backstory is because it fits into the mold of the story perfectly. The afterlife is a place built for accepting tragic ends, and the show's themes about mortality wouldn't come through if every character lived a happy life before death. I think sad moments are more than acceptable when they service the show's themes in a good way and especially when they have a solid message behind them. I agree that the likeability of the characters isn't really tied to how sad their story is, but like I said, most of them are charismatic enough to get by with a passing grade. For example I'm not much of a fan of Yui at all but I still think her final scene was the highlight of the show. And yes, the music is fantastic lol. That's about all I've got, thanks for sharing your opinions!
