It’s so lovely seeing people enjoy this show for the first time, I barely remember watching this for the first time as an 11-year-old back in 2009 because since then I’ve seen it over a hundred times probably, around the age of 14 I downloaded the show into my phone as mp3 files and listened to it like a podcast over and over again 😭

@@Totaraum It’s a lovely show and I just love how well realized the characters are, they might not have sweeping characters arcs where they change and grow as people like in k-on! But it’s very clear how they became the people they are in the show when you get to know their family members and learn small things about their upbringing 💕 The youtuber Subsonic sparkle has a great video about it, highly recommend checking it out if you like Lucky☆Star

I first watched it in 2016 and just fell in love with the charter dynamic. I don't think it is hard to get into if you don't know all the references like others would say I just think you have to be a bigger fan of Slice of Life than other genres. plus the Opening is a banner that's recognizable to everyone within the community for a who haven't seen the show but know the opening.

We literally had the same experience with this show. From not liking much of the comedy, not getting the references, only understanding the haruhi and geass references and also liking dub. I tried to articulate why I liked the show so much despite having only started watching anime from about a year ago and understanding none of it. but I gave up.

Kagami is a mood. This is by far the best comedy ive seen in honeslty in any medium, ive never laughed harder, especially with the clannad, kanon, and haruhi references. Also the sus dad and lucky channel, it never stops with this show, its relentless. If hyouka is a big brain approach to the slice of life genere, lucky star is that for anime comedy. 10/10 Also youre spot on how konata isnt just pandering to otaku/ mmo fandom, she comes off as quirky kind of strange with them, very good character writing

oh mannnn you summed my feelings on this show perfectly. I watched Lucky Star with my friend on the school bus every morning in like 2013. I'd seen a ton of 'cute girls do stuff' slice of life anime, but like you said, the characters in Lucky Star actually feel like real people. The show is so boringly down to earth in the best way. It felt true to my everyday life as a girl in high school. I've always thought it says a lot about Lucky Star that even though it was aimed at adult men, a huge portion of the audience (at least in the west) ended up being teenage girls.

I first watched Lucky Star in 2008. I was 13 at the time and was just getting into anime. Probably not the best show to start off, right? Regardless, I immediately fell in love with it. As you mentioned, it wasn't for the comedy or the references (many of which I didn't get at the time). I think the main goal of Lucky Star is to make you say "Bro, I feel that". The characters' dialogues are so realistically casual that you get the feeling you've been in those situations before, even if you never have. The characters, the timeless art style, the goofy background music and the overall feeling of coziness do magic and make it one of the most unique slice of life anime shows. And should I even mention that Konata is the most accurate representation of gamers and anime fans out there? I rewatched Lucky Star several times and each time I thought "Maybe it's not going to be as good as I remember it to be". Boy was I wrong. It delivers every time. I also recommended it to some of my friends, just to check whether I was blinded by nostalgia or it was actually a good show. And yes, some of them really liked it! I can't express how happy I felt sharing it with somebody. I think many people didn't like the show because they had wrong expectations. If you want to recommend it to somebody, tell them to not expect anything at all. That's the only way of going into it. Relax and catch the vibe.
@kamuyking551
@kamuyking551 2 жыл бұрын
I think Lucky Star's art style is really excellent for it, because it's a perfect example of how something can be simple, but also high quality. in fact, I'd say Lucky Star's animation is high quality because it's simple. it's not technically doing anything impressive, or anything at all most of the time, but even with a lot of the subtle movement... the silhouettes are right. the shapes are right, the perspective is right... this is a show that has no jank to the visuals. and that level of polish just kind of blends into the pastels... it isn't intimidating. this show is so comforting because it makes everything in the world feel soft and kind, even while maintaining just enough energy to keep it from being too saccharine or boring. I think it lets me relax the most because there's nothing I feel like I have to do... not even with the characters. I don't have to go to an after school club, I don't have to actually do any homework... the show cuts out all the parts I remember being stressful about school, and just gives you the down time where you can take it easy. it's almost like meditating, because the show models a level of calm and carefree that I might legitimately not be feeling in life at the moment. it gives you an amount of time where you feel like nothing else has to matter. and actually, it is kind of infectious how the characters will singularly focus on doing really simple routine things, or how they won't think to hard before admitting that they don't know something. even risking looking dumb for not knowing a thing isn't that big a deal... they'll just talk about it and eventually maybe figure it out together. it doesn't make you feel talked down to, because the characters are the ones wondering, and when they do it, it feels endearing. and you can kind of start thinking in terms of asking simple questions to yourself, or getting randomly happy about tiny things. and it can also be indulgent to see the characters have their cute aesthetic reflected in the whole art style of the show. when they're all sitting together eating their bento boxes at lunch, their handkerchiefs all have cute designs on them, or they'll wear unique outfits that fit their style... someone will have a pink mechanical pencil with a pencil topper, or someone will have a cute keychain on their bag, or someone will have a scarf with a pretty pattern on it, and you start realizing that the way everything in the show is drawn gives off the same appeal. you just get to watch it all function in motion, which is satisfying. basically, I think Lucky Star is a perfect storm of good qualities.
@Totaraum
@Totaraum 2 жыл бұрын
It has a lot going for it, for sure. I think that's why I found enjoyment in it even after the comedy fell flat. As for the visuals, I think the simplicity lends itself to a timeless aesthetic. It's so good

lucky star really is such a great show! it was one of my first animes ever (i think even THE first? but i cant verify rip), i watched the dub when i was like 8 yrs old on youtube lol. i didnt understand ANY references (still dont understand them actually, im not a huge anime watcher lol) and most of the jokes flew right over my head, but i still for some reason adored it for what it was. it impacted me ALOT at the time, it solidified my love of slice of life stuff at a young age, it really REALLY inspired me artistically at the time in ways i still notice in my work today, etc etc. sometimes i wonder how different i'd be if i ended up watching a different anime instead lol AND OH MY GOD FOR REAL ABOUT THE MUSIC!!!! holy hell dude its a CRIME how good kanatas theme is !!!! i genuinely get emotional listening to it sometimes lol, it just GETS me for some reason. the theme song, hell even just the BACKGROUND MUSIC is in my playlists! oh and hey another dub watcher!! it really is SO GREAT ahhh!!!! its probably cause it was the one i watched when i was a kid and reading subs is annoying (+ i watch it almost exclusively while i draw), and maybe cause im kinda into western cartoons & VAs, but its just what i prefer now lolol. These days I am much more into the Lucky Star games, but the anime was the first "real" anime I ever watched. I say "real" because I did watch stuff like Pokemon and other animes made with an international audience in mind (and heavily localized dubs). Was a big part of inspiring me to learn Japanese too. Lucky Star the anime honestly has a lot in common with the more mundane parts of Peanuts specials. It's a bunch of 4-panel comic strips put in animated form, and most comic strips have the premise of "a bunch of characters interact with each other and nothing really happens long term" so it's really not very unusual when viewed that way.
@Totaraum
@Totaraum 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know lucky star had games. If I had to guess I’d say they lean more towards the visual novel side of things. I think you’re on point with your comparison to the Peanuts. A lot of the time people talk down to mundane stuff like this, forgetting that some of the most popular pieces of media of all time are about every day life. I don’t think it’s weird for me to enjoy lucky star the way I did, but it sure can feel that way sometimes. Also congrats on learning/working on learning Japanese! Knowing multiple languages is a very cool skill to have

Since I’m still in high school most of friends don’t understand the references in lucky star and most of them mainly watch shonen anime so I feel like if I would recommend this show to them they won’t like it. I’ve always been the only watching shows from the 2000’s and as you can see by my profile picture I love this show. Konata’s life is pretty much what I would wish for in high school and I’ve always related to her so when I finished the show I didn’t wanted it to end here. It felt as if my days with the lucky star character was over and that made me a bit sad.

I'm probably one of the younger lucky star fans out there. At the time of writing I'm a 2nd year in university; however, I've been watching anime for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid I was so attracted to the internet and almost exclusively watched anime. Although it was when I was born, and would normally otherwise be too young to do so, I feel a ton of nostalgia for the early 2000's. I get most of the references (besides haruhi lol). I also love it for many of the reasons stated here. None of my peers (even those quite a bit older) know about this show which feels a little lonely.

In the words of a wise man, 「Konata Lucky Star She is the best by far If you don't like her you're bizaaaaarre」 Not seeing this video until it had been out for a week got me to click the bell button on this channel. Your videos are always a blast to watch, so it's a shame not to see them right away. And what a nice coincidence that this video came out around the same time as another one of my favorite small anime reviewers, Hazel, posted a video about fellow 2000s slice-of-life classic Azumanga Daioh (which I frankly prefer to Lucky Star, fite me). I definitely agree with a lot of what you had to say about Lucky Star. Most references in Lucky Star went over my head, especially when I first watched it, which was only about three months after I'd started getting into anime myself. I didn't even know what a "Haruhi" was! The jokes in Lucky Star, likewise, were quite a mixed bag, and the first few episodes in particular weren't that funny. I heard that KyoAni actually replaced the director after episode 4 for that reason. Yet Lucky Star was nevertheless just something that I really enjoyed regardless, and you've perfectly captured why exactly. Nice ending karaoke of 「Motteke! Serafuku」 by the way. You truly have the voice of an angel. Postscript: I don't think I've mentioned YuruYuri to you in a comment yet - that's an anime that I feel has a somewhat similar vibe to Lucky Star, except more of the jokes land IMO. Unfortunately it has no dub, though.

I’m glad you found your way to this video in the end lol, thanks for clicking the bell. Thank you for the singing praise as well, I’m pretty sure I could go pro if I wanted to

@@Totaraum J.C.Staff's Azumanga Daioh anime is often called things like the "grandma of slice of life". Nowadays it's often unduly overlooked or just as likely never even heard of by newer anime fans, but back in the early 2000s it was a huge hit. It basically singlehandedly normalized the idea of "anime about schoolgirls just vibing" and paved the way for KyoAni shows like K-ON!. Even now that "schoolgirls just vibing" is a staple of anime, most concur that Azumanga still holds up as a classic. If there's any downside to Azumanga, though, it's that a number of the references will go over your head. But, like, if that didn't bother you with Lucky Star then it probably won't bother you in Azumanga. In fact I'd argue that Azumanga uses reference humor considerably better than Lucky Star. A final random fact about Azumanga is that the word "waifu" started out as an Azumanga reference, before that word took on a life of its own. So even if you've never heard of Azumanga you've at least probably heard its contribution to English net-slang. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ There's not much to say about YuruYuri. I just think it's literally the funniest crap I've ever dun seen in my life, and most reviews seem to concur. It's broadly a popular slice of life with many dedicated fans.

I actually think that the audience potentially not getting all the references is part of the authenticity of this show... like, idk about anybody else, but my group of friends doesn't perfectly maintain 100% of the same interests. sometimes we'll watch a show together, and all of us will enjoy that, but each individual person has their own web of stuff they've liked on their own, which the rest of the group could be unfamiliar with. so during a conversation, someone might make a reference that you don't understand, for the sake of the only other person in the conversation who has played that game and knows what they're talking about. or just for the sake of themselves, because the opportunity was really too good to pass up. and when no one gets it, and they ask what they meant, the person sometimes has the opportunity to get up on their soapbox and explain obscure shit about the stuff they like. I feel like this is especially common in high school, when kids mostly interact while at school, so sharing media with others doesn't always happen expediently, even though they might have plenty of time to consume new media in their down time at home (probably unsanctioned down time that they're shaving off of their study time, which is a mood). or if you've met someone new, you have no real indication of what their prior knowledge consists of, or if they have a similar frame of reference to you. or if you just have to make do socializing with whoever you happen to share classes or lunch hours with, you might end up befriending some genuinely good people with wildly different tastes and interests to you. you've actually probably spent a large proportion of your life getting communicated to via references that sailed high over your head, only for you to ask for clarification, and the rest of the conversation flows from that. and Konata does at least some of this... like whenever she says something bizarre and Kagamine immediately deadpans "what the hell are you talking about?" which launches Konata on an explanation of some nerdy thing or another. each person tends to respond to it differently too, like how Tsukasa will relate topics back to things she's experienced, or Miyuki will talk about things she knows about the subject. but even when the show just changes format, and you know it's in reference to something, but you have no idea what... you can trust that Konata knows, and this is genuinely the kind of reference that she would enjoy. even for back in 2007, some of these references could've been pretty niche, especially if Konata was referencing something that was popular in Japan at the time, but never really made it over to the US. the important part is that these are Konata's interests, and they remain totally consistent, which makes her a well realized character.

Just got finished watching the series (except for the OVA) and I went onto youtube to see reviews of what others thought about it. There was this comment on some vaporwave remix of out of touch that got me invested to see what it was all about, pretty sure it was something about the future of the characters and konata being a NEET, and how she was the only one unable to move on. It's my first anime I finished all the way through (or even really watch in the first place) and although some of the scenes made me a tad uncomfortable it was pretty damn good! I feel like it had something that most western animation lacks which is a sense of normality to it all. I think that many people believe that life mainly consists of those flashy big projects/moments, when in reality it's usually the small quiet bits that make it up. Be it enjoying some good ol' silence with a friend or relative, talking about something you learned somewhere sometime, or those embarrassing moments that really weren't a big deal but stick out in your head, those parts determine your character. I went in expecting something completely different, and even though I still got some of that, it gave me a renewed appreciation of the finer things that happen in my day to day. It also taught me that I'm probably a weeb aswell but thats beside the point I wrote this at 1am, so if it's a tad fucky then roast me to bits

Personally, I feel like I'm in the minority of people who kind of enjoy all the anime references I don't get. Maybe it's just because I almost always just chose to watch meme videos, clips, or random discussions over sitting down and just watching a show properly. Seeing people talking about something I don't get is kind of the norm for me. What can I say? I like doing multiple things at the same time, so I'd usually just browse youtube while playing a game. Maybe it's undiagnosed ADHD, I don't really care at the moment. I really can't explain why, but I still have this pathological aversion to watching anime dubbed. I don't know if it's just because I know how these characters are supposed to sound, and hearing them be different feels out of place. In that case maybe I should try watching a show first in dubbed to see if I feel the same way the other way around afterwards. Partially, it's some form of warped peer pressure and pride that kind of makes me feel like it's the "right way" to watch, which is silly because the real intended way to watch is to know Japanese, and know all of the cultural references they make throughout, both of which I fail at spectacularly. Kind of makes me wonder how the show is for people in Japan. Does it sound like they're just waffling on about obvious cultural things for the whole show? Overall, I'm glad I watched subbed when I hear Kagami's english voice, and that they apparently say "stinky" a lot. Also, not sure if you do the same thing, but when you started talking about the microwave thing, I kept chiming in with my own experience, and what I do in the situations mentioned. It really plays into what you said about feeling like you're having a conversation with these characters. A lot of the time, I'd say something, and one of the girls will say the exact same thing seconds later, and that was always really fun to see.
