Dude I’m so excited you’re reading Pillars of the Earth. It’s an incredible book. It’s a pet peeve when people say it’s about building a cathedral. That’s really not what it’s about at all. It plays a major role but it’s about MUCH more.

I liked it but I actually enjoyed World Without End a bit more. The Evening in the Morning takes third place and I didn’t like Pillar of Fire and that latest one that just came out recently (I was so unimpressed I can’t even remember it’s name). Just a personal preference…know plenty of people who love all of them!

12:46 The worst book in Wheel of Time? Wow, that's up against some pretty stiff competition! Eye of the World would be my front-runner for worst book of all time! The rest of these look great, got a few on my TBR. I think Pillars of the Earth was made into a TV series a while ago, not sure but it rings a bell, might have to add that to the ever-growing TBR. I just bought the Of Blood and Bone Trilogy from The Broken Binding, I saw someone's video about the series and saw your comment on that video so decided I would get these books and start The Faithful and the Fallen audiobooks once I've finished Dragonfly Falling from Shadows of the Apt which I'm really enjoying right now.

Thank you for giving my work a try, Petrik. I hope your fans who are meant to love it, find it, and those who aren't, find something better! Crossroads Twilight is the reason I never went further than book one of WoT. Here's the story: I was in high school and my father and brothers were all reading Crossroads. One morning I wandered into the kitchen and found a note to my brothers from my dad that said something like, "This book was terrible. No battles, no fights, nothing exciting at all." Looking at the size of the book and series, I decided right then that I was out. They all DNF'd at Crossroads.

Even Jordan called Crossroads something like "an experiment that just didn't work out." At the least it will make for an interesting review, at best you end up the surprise defender. Pillars of the Earth is a favorite of mine: it's a historical novel that feels like fantasy in how detailed it gets on day to day life and building the cathedral, but there are (surprisingly) also some battles, murder, and scheming. I can't wait for you to read Empire of Grass! IMHO I think Witchwood is excellent, one of the most subtly impressive "first" books in recent years, but since it got a lot of setup up out of the way Empire of Grass just gets to build on things and return to storylines that only got a few chapters or scenes, weave some things together, etc. so to me it was even more enjoyable. Stone of Farewell is also my least favorite Osten Ard book! Whatever you think of Empire, imho, I think it's much better than Stone.
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo 2 ай бұрын
I didn't know that about Crossroads of Twilight, but based on people's reception... it seems like he was right about it. I look forward to reading Pillars of the Earth and Empire of Grass. As you said, subtly impressive is such a good way of encapsulating Witchwood Crown. The setup has been established, and I cannot wait to see how the plot develops from there in Empire of Grass! :)

Reading through Winter's Heart right now. I'm on my second readthrough, though it's been about three years. I'm trying to take notes this time. This is the most difficult time I've had with a WOT book second read. Half way through and no Mattrim Cauthon.

@JerodimusPrime 2 ай бұрын
Hey, Petrik, glad to see you're continuing with The Wheel of Time series. My advice would be don't skip or skim Crossroads of Twilight. Yes it is 100% a slog to read (especially Perrin's chapters) but once you finish the entire WoT series you'll see that somehow getting through these slog books seems to enhance the ending and make it feel even more nostalgic. It's like climbing a mountain, yes it's really hard and sucks when you're slogging uphill, but when you finish you realise that the struggle was part of what makes reaching the summit such a great feeling of achievement. Also another tip is that once you complete this book you should read A New Spring next before reading Knife of Dreams. Whatever you decide, best of luck with CoT, just remember, it's one more book to slog through then you're past the worst of it and in for the great ride.
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo 2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! I'll keep your advice in my mind as I read through CoT. Perrin is really one of my biggest issues with the series. 9 books into the series and I still don't find myself invested in his story. And yeah! I plan to read A New Spring first before reading A Knife of Dreams. If all goes according to plan, I'll be done with Wheel of Time early next year! :)

@@PetrikLeo I have secret passion for blurbs and I had the honor of helping Rob with Godeater's blurb. Such a sick book and sick cover. Rob does everything right as an indie author IMO. Great guy without ego too.

June...gosh where has this year gone?!? Finishing Gardens of the Moon has put me into a massive book-hangover and I'm having trouble connecting with any of the books I'm really trying to finish by end-May (lol sigh XD.) Might just read some Witch Hat Atelier manga until I get over it and start Deadhouse Gates next month!

Given I am reading “Madouc” (Lyonesse Trilogy #3) by Jack Vance, and I also hope to have a slight chance to finish “The Wise Man’ Fear” (Kingkiller Chronicle #2) by Patrick Rothfuss this month, I have pushed back “The Dragonbone Chair" by Ted Williams (Memory, Sorrow & Thorn #1, Epic Fantasy) to June, and will continue on with book #2, “Stone of Farewell”. Next on my June TBR, I have “A Brightness Long Ago” by Guy Gavriel Kay (Historical Fantasy inspired by Renaissance Italy) and “The Darkness That Comes Before” (Prince of Nothing Trilogy #1, Dark/Epic Fantasy inspired by the Crusades and I heard it described as “if Frank Herbert of “Dune” fame, had written Joe Abercrombie’s “First Law” trilogy”…). And I have located the only library copy of "Demon in White" in my country, so me and Mr. Ruocchio are gonna tango again in the not to-far-future! Also hope to get to Giles Kristian’s “Lancelot” this Autumn!😉Cheers!

A great many of those are books I really love. If you like Joe Abercrombie and R. Scott Bakker, you might want to try Richard K. Morgan's "The Steel Remains." And Empire of the Vampire. Similarly voiced MC's.
