I've been seeing a lot of comments and questions about lawns turning brown in the heat or having fungus issues that are taking over. What should you do about it?
Let's go over that today and talk about cool season vs warm season grasses, fungus, irrigation, and dog spots.

Really timely video for so many of us struggling with water and color issues as the heat cranks up. I like the message that it’s OK to let your grass go dormant if you need to, not that I personally plan to. There’s always turf paint😆!

Thank you for mentioning the rye grass. I’m in a drought area and have a mixture of blue grass and rye. Some of the rye hadn’t been doing well as we have a sprinkler problem and have just been watering with a hose. The guy who did it says he may have to replace some, but hoping that’s going dormant rather than dying, but your video was very helpful. I did spread fertilizer as well as slug and snail repellent on it to see if that will revive some of this.

Daily highs in the 100s and we haven’t had a day of rain since I seeded. I'm about 20 miles north of San Antonio and fighting the yard now. 100+ degrees now for at least 3 weeks with no rain. Have several large hotspots with what appears to have some compaction. Sprayed dish soap and will be drilling the soil soon. Zoysia with a lot of clay. One part of the yard really holds water(it's downhill) and the other is hotspots. Added higher flow heads in a couple of places that were a problem and that is helping some. And now I have some rust - my fault for watering too late in the day but too hot to treat.

I try not to water, but use liquid aerate, iron and protein-based N before it gets hot- along with a full app of Hydretain granuless before the dry season starts. I usually follow up with occasional watering, a half app of Hydretain along with taller mowing in mid July-Aug. This usually gets me through until Fall, unless there is a drought. Hydretain is expensive, but so is watering- especially if you don't have an irrigation system.

Great advice. Thanks! But what about weed control and fertilizer during the summer in cool season area
@TheWizardofMNT
@TheWizardofMNT 2 жыл бұрын
It's practically too late for weed control in the summer for a cool season lawn. Unless you have an unlimited supply of water and money to keep it healthy and growing. Really depends on how your summer goes. But to get back to your question about weed control, your safest option would be to hand pull the weeds. Weed killer sprays will just stress out your lawn even more on top of the heat/drought stress and depending on how hot it is, won't affect the weeds all that much if they're not actively growing to get the chemicals flowing through their system. That would be my approach. Someone else might say otherwise

unfortunately my lawn started turning on me first week of June, 2 really hot days and it had enough and threw in the towel early this year. I fertilized mid may spring so it's certainly keeping greener and healthier looking than anyone around but that sucked anyhow. (southern Ontario here) We only get to water 1 day a week between 2 particular times of that particular day as well so very restrictive. I water once a week for maybe half an hour (usually my wife tells me I forgot to turn the sprinkler off so it gets an hour at least most times). I'll usually just end up with sort of a half dormant half decent shape mixed throughout until September. Thanks Ryan for the tips, seems patience and general maintenance to hang on is my current course of action, just seemed to happen a month earlier than usual this year.

I live in Central Indiana as well. If you want grass that is drought resistant go with a Turf Type Tall Fescue. I know a guy in Indy that has all TTTF. Looks like a golf course. Wait until 1st week of September to put it down if you can water it enough. If not mid September. Don’t buy box store seed. Get the good expensive stuff. Then follow all of Ryans tips. I have the only green lawn on my block right now. Using sea kelp Humic acid and low nitrogen liquid products. Mowing every 2-3 days. All found on this site. Good luck!

cool season grass typically needs 1.5 to 2" per week. 3days of watering is typical. the trick that too many folks are clueless on is how many minutes each zone needs to run to put down the 1/2" or 3/4" of water per session... assuming you have a sprinkler system. use containers placed in the zone and run the system for 20 minutes... measure, extrapolate. also water early morning allowing enough time for the grass to dry before night fall.. adjust for rainfall too

Mushrooms are harmless to your lawn. They're just there probably due to lots of moisture and feeding on some kind of decaying material that's in the ground. They're usually not there if there isn't enough moisture in the ground. If they grow high enough, you can just mow over them.

Just wait until fall. You'll have a much much higher chance of success and be less stressed, unless you can stay on top of keeping everything hydrated throughout the crazy heat that comes with the long summer days. Way too much work and money involved just to keep grass green when it naturally goes dormant in order to survive. Your life will be so much easier in the fall.

I put in tall fescue because that’s what a big sod company sells near Franklin Ohio … I bought their seed 99% tall fescue unlike big box stores that sell it with 30% crap seed and weeds … I had good luck and once you get all the existing weeds in check ( weeds grow faster then the grass) I mowed every 5 days in spring now that it’s hot once every 2 weeks and looks great

Mine browns around the pavement edges, any tips on something to put down to keep it green?

There isn't really anything you can do for those areas except water them day in and day out and it's just not worth it imo. Those pavement areas absorb so much heat especially if they're in sunlight all day that they suck out all of the moisture from anything near them. If it bugs you that much, you can try reseeding those areas with something like a turf type tall fescue and hope they're strong enough to make it through the summer heat.

Ryan, I have lots of rye grass from seed purchased from you. I have some serious dead ( brown ) areas that have been hit with very hot sun. Even my irrigation system can’t keep up. I was told by a person who has knowledge of grasses that the rye grass is dead and won’t come back. They said rye dies, doesn’t just go dormant . Is this true? Will I have to over seed that area in the fall? I live in south Jersey and temps have been brutal. Thanks. Bruno

Just to add to that last comment I do water on my irrigation but it really doesn’t do much I try to water every other day for 45 minutes in that area and it doesn’t even look like I water

I think this could be a rough year's for lawns. With the obscene fuel and grocery prices something has got to give and I think it's gonna be lawns unfortunately.
