In this series of interviews with former Mormon turned activist John Dehlin originally done for his channel, we walk through my life since leaving Scientology as an activist and educator against destructive cults, thought reform and undue influence.
If you have been looking for the whole story all in one go, this series is for you. You also get the added bonus of comparisons to Mormonism. Enjoy!
This video is mirrored from John Dehlin's Mormon Stories channel, originally titled "Becoming an Ex Scientology Activist - Chris Shelton Pt 4"

PLEASE take him up on his offer!! You deserve to be making enough money to live and afford health care and meet your needs! You NEED financial resources that allow for proper self care, especially when you are doing work like this. Your channel has been a life line for me coming out of a cult completely a couple years ago. PLEASE find a way to make a real living doing this.

I watched all these videos and was blown away by Chris's emotional intelligence and self awareness while talking about all this. I'm from the UK and grew up very near East Grinstead, I've seen the church there but didn't know much about scientology. Will view that place very differently now!

I can't even imagine what it must feel like to have no health insurance. This is such a completely normal thing for me. I got bitten by a dog this week and went to the hospital just to get a professional opinion and to make sure I don't have to be worried about it getting inflamed or some shit. Now I immagine having to think whether or not I could afford the hospital visit and if it was necessary, which is absolutely crazy. Greetings from Europe.

I’ve worked all my life and only got healthcare insurance 3 years ago. Bout to cancel it due to health issues which keep me from working now. How ironic .

Dr. John Delhin & Chris Shelton did an amazing job bringing Scientology to the forefront and the interview from Chris’ story (4 videos) “Life in Scientology “ and then another 4 videos “ Life after Scientology “ in an excellent manner. I was blown away from the very 1st interview to the 8th. The interviews were spoken in layman terms and when they used words that only their prior cult members used, but they explained it and both gentlemen spoke so eloquently, but it was a real eye-opener and as an outsider I always I knew that Scientology was very questionable, especially with the likes of Tom Cruise, especially the interview he did with Matt Lauer, allegedly turning his children against their mother, Nicole Kidman and then jumping off the couch on Oprah and then watching Leah Remini’s documentary really cemented that there was something very wrong in the church of Scientology because she had been one of the most outspoken celebrities when she was in the church, so I listened when she left and the documentary but Chris Shelton brought it to life (I almost felt like I was on inside walking beside him on his journey) and the way Dr. Delhin asked the questions, they were questions everybody wanted to know and again Chris did an excellent job telling his story and now I’m going to look into Dr.Delhin’s “Mormonism “, because for many years and I mean right up until I started watching these videos, I always thought Mormons were part of Christianity but, on steroids and that was a real eye-opener to find out differently when Dr.Delhin explained what it’s like to be in the Mormon church, so now I have to look into his videos on Mormonism because it is so far removed from the way I was raised as a (lapse) Roman Catholic. Both gentlemen were so open and honest and I was really sorry to see when I finished the last video interview with Chris Shelton because it was done so well that I didn’t want to miss a word either one was saying & found myself carrying my phone with me even while I was doing household chores, in a supermarket or chores around my house, because I didn’t want to put it on pause, I had to watch because it sucked you in, but again it was just so well-told and I was glued, so I highly highly recommend these videos to anyone who is interested in learning what it’s like to be in Scientology and then what happens after you leave and again both men need to be congratulated on a job well done.

Hey Chris your answer about why you do what you do with your videos was absolutely true and I have to mention you are very good at what you do. You are a shining example of somebody who, has made the journey out of the insanity of being in a cult.

Your honesty makes you trustworthy. I think being genuine is the reason you have amassed a following, including people that have no connection to Scientology. Leading by example is one of the best and biggest impacts you can make on others. I believe this is a testament to the message you’ve been spreading.

Brilliant interview! It is so liberating to know that I'm not making up ridiculous stories about the effects of cult life - the experiences a very, very real and have far-reaching consequences that require one to get critical care - emotionally and psychologically - in order to avoid toppling permanently into a dark hole. Education, such as through channels such as both of yours, is definitely high on the check list.

I first heard Chris on the Oh No! Ross and Carrie podcast in an interview as part of their Scientology series. I had recently started listening to their podcast when I started looking up flat earth stuff after my older brother started talking seriously about it. I had been taught and was sure that the Bible was to be read literally. Through hearing people's biblical justifications for flat earth theories based on a literal interpretation of the Bible and how the dynamics of control in scientology, mirrored a bit too close to my childhood in a Pentecostal Christian home. It really made me start to look at whether I had good reasons for my faith. At the same time I was trying to reconcile my sexuality as a gay man, with the faith I grew up with. 2 or so years later I'm a out Gay Atheist and don't want to go back :)

Building community is critical! Adults don't have many ways to do that outside of "work", and being employed by the same company isn't necessarily a good reason to become friends.

Looked for something to watch on this Thanksgiving Day. There's lots of wisdom in this video that stands the test of time. Having worked for a toxic workplace and toxic boss (who belonged to a cultish religion), much is familiar and applicable to the world outside of cults. CoS took things to a dark extreme, but many of those things are toxic in even smaller seemingly harmless situations. For example, RPF if like a PIP in a job. In a toxic workplace, a horrible employee can linger for years if they suck up to the boss, but a good employee can be put on a PIP.

Good point about groups. I think all groups do have similar structures. And groups are the most important component of money making.

Hi Chris, ' autodidact' is the word for someone who taught himself his (or herself... her, for that matter) skills. I do believe that's the word in English, i imagine the origen is Greek. I really love your work.

I do see a similarity between Chris and Lawrence woodcraft In fact they were before scared of losing friends and family members. Jason beghe seems more like he was addicted to the services provided and burned out. Another client of Scientology said he was harassed over on becoming Sea org member.

This is an old video but it is still good advice. When someone attacks my character in an effort to evade my point and I catch them, my response is always the same. I'm rubber you're glue whatever bad you say bounces off me and sticks to you. The conversation that never was, usually ends abruptly in that moment. #LiveLikeYourLifeDependsOnIt

I didn't enjoy it at all. Dehlin seemed too wound up, like he was constantly yelling. I couldn't listen to him long - exhausting or I get a headache, not a chill conversation like Chris. I do wonder what he is promoting for "post Mormonism". Is he pushing Jesus or more to my liking, no religion any more, but I really don't know from what he said. Ironic that his room divider looks like a Mormon temple motif.
