Have you ever felt singled out for the way you looked?
Hello my fellow nurse brothers and nurse sisters and welcome to the nursing affiliated channel, today we are getting honest and uncomfortable as I share some of my experiences as a Hispanic male RN. What does a nurse look like first of all? When I come into the room, beard fully loaded, tattoos up my arm, laughing out loud like a the happy Hispanic that I am i may not be what you expect. However I have a passion for my work, and I’m here to care for you.

I’m a proud Mexican, Registered Nurse in ICU with 10yrs in the game and now recently became a Family Nurse Practitioner! Viva La Raza baby!! 🇲🇽 This video hits home for me and I know so many other Latino men in Nursing so thank you for shedding some light on who we are and what we do. I’ve been in several situations while working at the bedside and being judged because I’m young, Mexican with tattoos. I’m not gonna lie in the beginning of my career I would get angry but as I grew in my career I became more aware of the ignorance in this world and I let it go. It only made me a better nurse and a better person at heart. I knew God chose me to do this noble kind of work and I refused and still refuse to let people make me feel otherwise. Nursing isn’t for everyone. But nursing is for me and for people like you who truly love what we do. So my nursing brotha keep shining and representing our Mexican culture. Si Se Puede✊🏾

I'm glad for you and everything, but do you have to be one of those "Si se pude, viva la raza" type Mexicans? If you have such a massive problem with the discrimination you describe then doing your job well and showing you are a good person will speaks now and forever. But that prideful Mexican stuff is sickening, I heard it my whole life as a Mexican and it needs to stop.

My Brotha! I am a Hispanic Registered Nurse down here in South Texas, I got a shaved head, long goatee and I also get called doc by the geriatric population. The best feeling is when we overcome those initial impressions of what they think a nurse should be, and wow the patient and family with great bedside manner and a level of care that exceeds their expectations. I have patients many times, I am sure you have also, mention that I have provided better care than any other female nurse they have had previously. To me that is the ultimate Thank You. Have a good one my friend !

I'm not a nurse, I'm actually a room service/food server but I as a Hispanic myself I love being able to talk to patients that can only speak Spanish & making them feel more comfortable. This one patient's health care team was English speaking (except for her translator of course). When I started speaking Spanish to her she got so happy that she had someone she could relate & talk to.

Hey Nurse Mendoza ! So happy that you covered such an important and relevant topic. I've been a Registered Nurse for about a month and a half now and I've already had 4 racist/ poking the bear instances from my patients. Its been a little hard for me because I'm definitely the type of person to sacrifice myself for the trust and peace of mind of others, so I literally don't know what to say or how to react. I end up saying nothing, and I know that is not only ineffective, but also allowing myself to be disrespected repeatedly. I appreciated the experiences you shared! Thank you for continuously being open, transparent, and motivating !!

I’m not a nurse or Hispanic or male. But, I’ve been a patient in the hospital so many times throughout my life. I would consider myself to be lucky and happy to have you as my nurse just based on your caring personality which is so important. I 100% wholeheartedly believe that having a caring and companionate nurse makes all the difference in a patients hospital stay. I’ve had great nurses (male and female) and I’ve had horrible nurses (male and female). I really don’t understand why someone who doesn’t have a caring type of personality would even bother going to school to become a nurse because even if they’re really book smart, if they’re not a caring and compassionate person then most likely they’re gonna be a terrible nurse. Sorry this got so long, but I just feel really strongly about this from a patients perspective.

Diversity, being male, and knowing more than one language (and even tattoos) are only benefits in nursing honestly. Some patients are more comfortable with a male nurse or if you can speak to them in their own language. Having tattoos actually makes you MORE approachable since many patients view you as on their “level” so to speak. I hope more diverse people follow your footsteps into this profession. We need you!

Yo conozco el cucuy, la llorona, and la chancla. Wow I can't believe that the percentage is 4.8%. I'm a proud mexicana that is now going on 3 years as a registered nurse in the emergency department. Till this day I have not had a racist/prejudice moment and I pray that day never comes but I am aware one day I'll be in that predicament. On the other hand I love helping mi genta latina/hispanic hablando español. Seeing their sigh of relief when they realize I speak spanish is one of the reasons that I went into the medical field.

This is very nice. I’m Mexican and graduated this May and working as a psych nurse. There were 3 Hispanics in my nursing program and only 2 graduated including me. Sad to see my other classmate fail because being the minority puts us in an disadvantage in so many ways. I just wanted to share as a Mexican nurse (it’s obvious , my face says it all 😂) I NEVER experience any racism as a student but I always had that concern in the back of my head specially with elderly patients. I always had that in mind just to be prepare to act appropriately and not let it affect me. Being a male Mexican nurse of 23 years has a lot of people shocked. I look 19 so that was another concern I had that patients would bring up the “aren’t you too young to be my nurse?” I had 2 patients ask me my age but it was the opposite. They were happy and encourage me to keep going . In conclusion, I only experienced good things as a triple minority.

As a former Nurse I applaud u for how u ended it. It does not matter. I was fortunate to work with a couple male nurses they were awesome 👌 in this day and age we do need a ton more male nurses and if Hispanic all the better! U can reassure Hispanics who don't speak English. So needed when I worked. As for your tattoos, as long as not offensive who cares? Its all about the care ❤. I've seen even females with them. A great conversation to see what a tattoo means to the person. So yes I've seen Doctors, nurses, techs ect with them. Has never bothered us. I say yes Nursing is a calling as is tattoos so go for it! Thanks for speaking English too! We need more!

I’m a male nursing student with tats and identify as Hispanic; I’m mixed white European and Mexican. I was denied my Hispanic culture and language by both parents as a child and struggle with the fact that I am fluent only in English; I know only a small handful of words & phrases in Spanish. Whites and Hispanics both give me grief over this fact. I often feel like a fraud. Do you have any advice or words of wisdom? Thank you. Love the video. New subscriber.

I work as a home health aide, even though not a nurse, I document my clients conditions, physical appearance, what they can/can't do with assistance and I'm 27 but apparently when I walk into a clients home, they don't believe I'm 27 and ask for my driver's license because they think I'm in high school. I get this a lot. Well I was a 1 pound preemie at birth. Maybe that's why I'm so small and young looking.

I needed this. I'm from Mexico, and got my papers 4 years ago and pushed to get my citizenship a couple months ago. I always had cleaning jobs or restaurant jobs, I was able to land a job as a CNA getting payed cash. But fast forward to now, I'm in nursing school and the symptom of not feeling good enough has come up, I also have thoughts like "I'm an immigrant, who do I think I am becoming a nurse?, I shouldn't be here, I should be cleaning or working at a restaurant". I'm doing very well in the program, I was trying to figure out how to deal with these emotions. And I LOVE how you said we can advocate for our mexican patients, our Latinos, we can help family back home, our own parents!!! Aunts and uncles!! These gave me a new perspective, I ahora si le voy a seguir echandole ganas!!!!!

Unfortunately, many people that see male nurses assume they're homosexual. People don't assume a woman is a lesbian if she is a physician. However, the nursing dress code has changed a lot from back in the 60's & 70's. My mother was a Registered Nurse back in the 70's at Duke University Medical Center. She was one of a few Black RN's at Duke in those days. There were mostly Black LPN's at Duke Hospital in those days. Nurses wore all white with white stockings and a cap. Nurses back in those days weren't allowed to wear a lot of make-up, and tattoos was unheard of. LPN's and RN's wore caps and their caps represented what School of Nursing they graduated from like Johns Hopkins University, NCCU, Duke University, Howard University, UNC-Chapel Hill, Lincoln School of Nursing, etc. Now you go into a hospital and you don't know who's a nurse because everyone basically wear scrubs. You rarely see LPN's working in hospital settings anymore. Mostly RN's are now assigned to hospitals and you see LPN's working in nursing homes and maybe Kaiser Permanente here on the east coast. I wanted to attend nursing school after high school in 1973, but I didn't do well in Biology and Chemistry in high school. I went on to major in Business Administration receiving a B.S. from Howard University and a M.B.A. from Georgetown University. If I had gone into Nursing, I wanted to be in psychiatric nursing. By the way I too speak fluent Spanish and being bi-lingual is a plus.

Wanna hear a funny story? I used to work in a nursing home on 2nd shift. Well, one night I was getting a dementia patient ready for bed. I move back her bed sheets, get her pajamas out of her dresser drawer, and tell her I am getting her ready for bed. I potentially begin to get her ready for bed by first removing her eyeglasses, placing tem on her bedside table and then she says to me, "That's as far as I'm letting you go with me. I have standards." Obviously, she is thinking I have more in mind than just simply getting her ready for bed. So, I exit the room, and inform the nurse that she is uncomfortable with me, being a male, getting her ready for bed and told her, "She said, 'I have standards.'" The nurse then said, "Well, it's good to know that, at one time, women actually had standards because women these days don't have standards." 😂😅😅
