I really miss how G1 and G2 ponies feel, I love that the whole body was a soft, squishy plastic vinyl. They’re more comfortable to hold and I don’t like how hard the plastic is nowadays. I loved this video it was so fun and unhinged please make more!! 💖🦄

I grew up in the 80s so seeing Fairy Tails birds was so nostalgic. I used to just wonder if I invented them in my dreams or if they really actually existed because they seem so over the top. I used to be confused as a child as to whether they were MLP or not. Thanks so much for sharing.

Speaking of gay bride ponies, mlp did actually have canonly gay ponies in g1 (although I doubt Hasbro intended it that way). I'm not sure exactly what year, but Hasbro produced a few porcelain figures of ponies, including a wedding figure called "wedding prance" featuring Glory and Moondancer getting married. As far as I know it was before they released male ponies, and their only solution to make a wedding figure was to feature two female characters getting married and just title one as the groom (Glory). There was also another figure with Applejack and Lickety-Split called "pony playmates" that was more than a little gay... boy ponies weren't a very prominent part of mlp even after being introduced so I like the idea of colorful gay ponies lol. Great video! mlp and mlp inspired toys are some of my favorite toys of the 80s and I find them so interesting :)

As a child with G1 Ponies and their castle dominating my entire bedroom, I too was mystified when G2 arrived on the market and looked like aliens. They were not my girls. However as a horse girl with a zoology degree I can confirm there are some of us who love mlp even if the rest of the equestrian cohort insists ponies must come in normal boring colours.

Horse girl here. I noticed a lot of people who also collect Breyer, will have a few ponies. They often like gen 1 or gen 4. I wouldn’t call them collectors of mlp but they often do have a pony or two. Personally, my mlps (and my customs) are on the shelf above my breyers. The people that have both collections usually started with mlp tho. Mlp is the gateway horse girl drug confirmed

I never played with My Little Ponies as a kid (I was a horse girl and you're totally right about Fashion Star Fillies appealing more to that demographic), but I was obsessed with a VHS series called Happy Ness; Secret of the Loch. It was My Little Pony but with loch ness monsters/ plesiosaurs. I never had any of the toys and they seem really rare online, but someday I will add some to my Weird Dinosaur Things collection with my Darlin' Dinos, Magic Kissing Dragon, and Fairy Tail birds (my collection's definition of "dinosaur" is sometimes stretched to accommodate dinosaur-adjacent creatures).

Little Pretty Kitty was my personal fave of all these because I love kitty cats

I was born Dec 1985 so the late 80s through the 90s was my childhood toy era. I owned my little ponies, little pretty kitties and puppies, and I had one sweetie pup, and one dream beauty (it kills me I didn’t keep it). I didn’t own any fairytale birds but I wanted them. I remember seeing them on toy shelves and playing with ones my friends owned. I also had a friend with an extensive fashion star fillies collection and absolutely loved playing with them and all their costumes, but their glam-rock aesthetic and more realistic musculature combined with the fantasy features was less appealing to me then some of the other toy lines available at the time and I didn’t list over them on toy shelves. Sweetie pups/kitties were fun and I own a few now, but I have such a vivid memory of being so upset that the pups mostly had “mustaches” and though I liked mine, I always wished i had been gifted a sweetie kitty instead of a pup. The little pretties were my absolute favorite. I remember their packaging so distinctly, admiring them on toy shelves, opening and playing with mine, the smell of them, and even though they were made by Mattel, they looked so much better with the G1 my little ponies than the hasbro “my little” animals did. I still have the little cradle that one of the baby ones came with and I re-collected several in my little pony lots when I started re-collecting that type of toy about 15 years ago. I also loved Lady Lovely Locks show growing up and though I never owned any, I longed for them and loved how they paired together since Mattel used the same molds from the lady lovely locks kitties. I was happy they didn’t reuse the silky pup mold though because I always thought the toy version of silky pup looked strange (mostly because it wasn’t heavily rooted enough and ends up looking weird and bald). Now one thing to keep in mind is that the turnaround for toys on shelves was not nearly as quick bask then as it is now. I remember seeing G1 ponies on shelves well into the mid 90s. I remember buying the teeny tiny newborn twins at a Walgreens in the mid 90s (technically “released” 90/91) and I even remember eyeing a sippin’ soda pony at a Tuesday morning in probably ‘96 or ‘97 (they were released in ‘92). I still wish I could have bought her that day but I was either not forward enough to ask my mom for her, or my subtle hinting that I wanted her went unanswered *sigh*. Even at larger toy retailers like toys R us and target, my little pony G1 had a presence on shelves well into the 90s. Though I recall being beguiled by my older cousin’s MLP collection from the earlier years and relished playing with them (she decided she was too old for such things by that point), it’s not like MLP G1 was waning in popularity with me or my friends. I have no memory of G2 as a child, but if I did see it on toy shelves, I would have dismissed them as a knockoff because of how different they were from G1. You’ve done a wonderful job compiling “my little pony” type toys from over the years and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed basking in nostalgia. I can’t help but notice, though, the glaring omission of Magic Meadow Ponies. I was never much into Cabbage Patch Kids, but I instantly fell for Magic Meadow Ponies (and the larger crimp n curl counterpart). I preferred the sculpts of G1 MLP, but the coated curable yarn hair or super long brushable hair of these ponies was not to be overlooked. I’ve always loved the idea of creating more toys based on your definition of what makes a “my little pony”. When Kenner released the later year littlest pet shops with brushable elements and more fantasy colors, I was in love. Really, the sky is the limit with these type of toys, and yet it seems to be a relatively untapped market compared to what it could be.

I love seeing the interesting different variations of other animals. I want to feel how the little birds perch on the finger.

The little pretties may have likely been inspired by the lady lovely locks pets from the time. They practically recycled the molds and just made them a bit bigger and added a few more. Check out those animals… especially if you want to see a set of adorable dragons with rooted hair 💚 (Also don’t forget keypers because who doesn’t love a brushable snail or turtle?!)

I was never into the ponies, but I had a Sweetie Pup, and in 1989 I was a teenager who had stopped buying toys, so it must have really stood out to me. I completely forgot about it until you mentioned it. I don't know why I never got a Kittie because they look awesome.

They made some interesting choices back then, like I think the birds are cuter without the long luxurious locks, but interesting all the same. I never had MLP outside of a couple McDonalds toys and a knock-off adult and baby set someone gave me, but it's cool to see the old toy trends. My favorite of these spin-off lines are the Dream Beauties.

My grandma just brought over my mom and aunts old dolls and stuff that I would play with, and with them was the three sparkling horses I remembered. I had no idea what they were, but turns out they're fashion star fillies! I thought I had mo chance of figuring out who they were, but here we are!

The transformers franchise also has a super similar cycle of reboots/redesigns every like 8-10 years or so! Although it’s a lot more directly tied to show and movie releases because we don’t get like. Cute dress up sets or themed releases (as much as I’d love to see a transformers brushable or something somehow)

Sorry for the incoming essay: G2 is so cute & criminally underated. It's a shame they're so hard to track down for a reasonable price in the US. One of my long term goals is to have a complete G2 collection. G3 was the first Gen I fell in love with since I'm a 98 Baby. I have so many fond memories growing up with the ponies & all their media. I love the Sea Ponies but I'm still puzzling out how to display them cutely. I kind of wanna make them a cute lil diorama setup. I'm such a Creamsicle stan like I love that she's a lil giraffe🦒 🥺. Dream Beauties are just so glorious to stare at tbh. Now that I found two of the Fairy Tales in the ponies case at my local toy store it has opened the flood gates for me. Like I want them all & doubles to do customs with!! They're such cuties & their long hair is so glorious plus they have really fun hair color blends!! You mentioning jewel riders is so funny. I never had any of the mlp or other my little toys but I coveted the Sunstar from jewel riders that I had a child. I also had the dolls and the fact that they had armor and visors was honestly so cool for the time. I haven’t thought about those since I was a kid

i think the ponies in a PC game i used to play as a kid were based on the style of the gen2 ponies, my little pony: friendship gardens! i LOVED that game a lot but always wondered why they weren't especially reminiscent of the ponies i was used to seeing! i definitely think they're super nice looking as toys though n wish they had been at least a lil more popular in the us lol

In middle school i got bullied for liking my little pony aside of the fact that the only touch i had with them was maybe seeing them in an ad.. idk why this bothers me that much till this day but in the last couple of years I See people enjoying the Show and smth and i remember that middle school thing every time. There were dragons with brushable hair sometime in the early 90’s, I had a couple. They came with perfume you could make them spray from their mouth and a little flower cup to drink from. Look up Magic Kissing Dragons. I was so into dinosaurs as a kid I missed out on a lot of these. I had some G1 ponies when I was really little ( 5 or younger) but they got lost in one of the many moves, wish I would have hung onto them.

Seeing that you briefly mentioned the Mermaid ponies, I'm surprised you didn't mention 'My Pretty Mermaids' which is part of the MLP spinoff group despite being made by Playskool, which is part of Hasbro. Some of the characters even share their names with certain ponies, e.g. Moondancer. I actually have one of these, Wave Dancer, who I have sitting next to the only Mermaid pony I have, Sea Princess. Still, a very fun video to watch. I recently got my hands on some Darlin' Dino minis, so can't wait for them to arrive in the mail. 😄

Love MLP! I fell in love with G2 via the French magazines ❤ I came into it towards the tail-end, unfortunately, so I wasn’t able to buy many of the toys as a kid. I remember the strange disconnect of buying media with G2 art only to see the G1 ponies on screen- and then wanting those as toys but finding out they were long gone. Then G3 started and I went in all ham. I tapered off around the Ponyville line- and never collected G3.5. Then G4 and the show happened- I was a casual watcher. Didn’t actually start recollecting ponies until 2018 when my grandparents passed (they used to buy me G2s so G2s are very entertained with my memories of them). So I started recollecting G2 and the magazines (my dream is to complete the magazines) and then G1 and some G4. But mostly, I’m a G2 collector. Anyway, another brand I discovered as a kid was Happy Ness: Secret of the Loch. It was a short lived series of my little pony- esque lochness monsters! I was obsessed with the VHS that I kept borrowing from the library. Apparently they also made toys of them! I’ve seen pictures but I’ve never seen them in person. Would make a wonderful addition to your “MLP weirdos” category 😂

I had a collection of G3 ponies growing up but we also had 1 G2 pony in there that I guess we got from a second hand store or something, Idk. I know now that G2 was very unpopular for straying so far from the chubby pony style but as a kid I thought she was pretty, special and awesome cause she was different from the rest of our ponies. Then a few years later I thought she was a knock off pony cause she was so different from the rest. That collection is still sitting around here somewhere

I feel like with g1 Hasbro was just experimenting to see what worked. So in later generations they just stuck to what they found worked in g1 which would be the sparkly ponies and not the weird stuff. In most circles I have been in the sea ponies were generally ridiculed. So I can see why Hasbro was weary of bringing them back. And yes I agree that the g4 toys were incredibly disappointing.
