You can do it! I spent too many gems on the balloon pop, but if you save 'em, you can do fine. AJ and Pinkie don't even cost gems, so you just have to do the quest lines and have a few coins. Rarity is 25 gems, but you get some to start and one gem every level, plus random gems for clearing parasprites and changelings. Fluttershy is more expensive, but she's still coins, so she's easy to get once you have businesses running in Ponyville and Canterlot and make more coin daily. The only one that is probably set too high is Rainbow Dash. I think she costs 75 gems. I don't have her yet. That's a lot of gems, even if you save them. You are almost forced to purchase gems if you want RD. But overall, it's a lot of fun, and you can get 5 out of the mane 6 with a little work (wouldn't be much fun if they just gave you everything.) Mini-games are fun, especially the dancing game, and the graphics are great. Plus they have the real voice actors for the mane six and a few other ponies, too. :) And... I like this video. Cool to see behind the scenes. Ashleigh Ball seems 20% cooler than everyone else. ;)

If I remember correctly, Ashleigh has said that doing RD's voice is taxing on her vocal cords. Especially when she sings. Which is why RD hasn't had many songs.
