This song is so important to me. It's my favorite BTS song. I had to give up my dreams of a music career (piano) when I broke my hand. I had to stop singing when my throat was damaged by a ventilator tube. Worse still, Covid gave me a three-year-ling bout of writer's block. (I'm a published author with several series to finish. ) I could/can relate to the feeling of being abandoned by your muse when she was the only thing keeping you together most of the time. This song, the pathos of it, and the Graham quote attached to it, all gave me, if not comfort, then the sense of not being alone.

Bless you for sharing. I am a retired Critical Care RN. You have been my preferred type of patient for 40 years. I lost 4 coworkers to Covid. I have spent 40 years wondering about the outcome of my patients. I do understand your struggle and the long haul it has been. I have maintained my full code status also because of people like you. I understand we all pick a constant to help us maintain and music is one of those things. The bigger constant is the tenacity and sure will of the brain! Stay safe. Keep on keeping on. We are all in this together.

I'm in 80s and, thankfully, found BTS during the pandemic when I was alone in my home for many months. They became my comfort and kept me from going stir crazy. Over the years I was a fan of many artists and genres of music, but BTS is special. I know they don't know me personally and don't and shouldn't share everything about their lives with us, but I feel that they genuinely care about me as an ARMY. My brother was a Viet Nam veteran. When he first came back, he didn't like to be thanked for serving either, so I was interested in hearing your friend's feelings about that. I enjoyed your reaction. Black Swan is one of my favorites. Another one is Blood, Sweat and Tears (even though I don't understand all the symbolism).

Fun facts: in economics, "black swan" refers to "unpredictable events with often catastrophic consequences". It was based on how swans were once perceived to be all white, and upon discovering a black one in Australia, it changed the course of zoology forever. Seeing the song from this perspective gives the song more weight because losing their love for what they do was really unthinkable. I learn a lot of references honestly through ARMY Twitter and seeing these parallels in different fields and how they all make sense when viewed through the right lens always blow me away about BTS 💜

@@DestructiveMediaYT that's a good plan! Shadow is such an interesting song. After, maybe you would want to consider Agust D's 28? I think the lyrics is reflective and relatable to people of all ages who generally have gone through dreaming, letting go, growing, and essentially not always knowing where they are or what they're doing at the moment but attempting to accept it all. We are not alone, BTS got me through a divorce and the longest COVID ANYWHERE in Victoria Australia. Their messages are so Meaningful and when you get subtitles in English they are amazing and RAPPERS messages are also broken down. Exceptionally good RAPPERS who are story tellers and poets. As I said couple of day's ago I've watched everything from 2013 until 2023 3 times. After watching Black Swan again I can see I missed some of the meaning so I will now rewatch this again. They have so much content and many albums and songs. I can see where Brian is happy to have a friend to share and talk about BTS. My friends are not interested in BTS. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I am new to BTS. I keep asking myself why I did not know this? I probably would still not know BTS but I retired. I am 72. Music has been very important to me because it is a portable constant. I was a military brat until I was 19. I am a Flower Child so Hendrix Led Zeppelin, Doors are my go to music constant. But I also like Brule which is Native American. I like music from the Andes. I got to BTS through the back door. I have been watching Chinese dramas and Korean dramas on my phone. I moved to the mountains and TV is impossible. I went to high school with Asian kids. I love the culture. So one night via KZfaq popped a picture of Jimin. WTF? THERE IN ALL HIS PERFECTNESS. STILL IN THE RABBIT HOLE. I appreciate different perspectives on all things. (YOU)I have had to adapt and have done so by totally submersing into a culture. I want different takes on a subject. All people have a story. All people have value. I can talk to anyone. I am a retired nurse.EVERYBODY WORLDWIDE LOVES BTS. Their message is one of hope and unity. Not everyone gets lost in philosophy. I think self exploration is important. Testing yourself is important. Keeping an open mind and heart is important. If you are homeless, hungry, afraid just breathing into the next minute is all you can accomplish. Stay safe.

I love everything on MOTS7. It truly hit my heart deeply. Im a single mom, disabled, with abuse in my past. I found BTS with MOTS. Both MOTS and MOTS7 were a big draw to me. I was struggling with who I was. Who came out of all the ashes of my past. I had most the individual. Intro Persona clicked with my struggle. Who the hell am I? Am I who I was? Am I who others want me to be?? Ultimately I'm just me. And I'm still working on it but I have a good handle. On reminded me that through it all, I fought for me and my kids. That I don't give up. I try. I push forward. I plan to tattoo it on my inner arm to remind me that no matter how much people knock me down, I'll get up. Becoming disabled due to genetic health issues, as an independent active person, I struggle with the themes of Black Swan. I lost my creativity in my marriage. My reduced physical mobility is for health. Both are a struggle emotionally. I am back to making creative things (writing, photography, editing videos) . Ad really passionately listening to music. The other steps in my healing are the Love Yourself series and the First UN speech. The guys entertain and connect. Thry gave me an amazing community. And as a person passionate about music, they gave me absolutely perfect music on many genres. They and ARMY helped me heal. They inspire me daily. My other arm will have the Love Yourself heart to remind me to Love myself first and foremost.

I love black swan because the song is about the fear of loosing passion. In so much of bts’ journey they talk about how they just continued to run and to stick to their passion. They talk about how at the beginning you could see the desperation in their eyes. Now that they’ve achieved their dreams they’re looking back and are scared that if they lose their passion they’ll be stuck. At least that’s how I interpret it. Honestly anything off of MotS7 would be great to react to. I’d also suggest maybe magic shop or 2!3!

What a great reaction. The conversation at the end was fascinating. I'm so glad Claude enjoyed the song. I appreciate the stopping of the video so you can share your thoughts and the rewinding to catch some of the little things. Looking forward to the next video! Borahae! I am quickly editing this to add recommendations LOL. I know Bryan has done a poll already. But I wanted to recommend "ON" Kinetic Manifesto. So Black Swan is the first song I heard from BTS and started me on my own journey so it will always hold a very special place in my heart and will always be one of my favorite BTS songs, that being said, "ON" Kinetic Manifesto hits in a very different way for me. It's like a fight song in the sense of it feels empowering, it makes me feel like I can take on the freaking world! Also the camera work and choreography in this song is beyond epic. Dionysus is another amazing one, which was on the poll, and of course an AWESOME choice. I know in my comment on the poll I mentioned MMA 2019. Might be cool for Claude to hear all the songs performed there, and then watch it possibly? Louder than Bombs is an amazing song, no MV, but good lyric videos. It is one song that ARMY has always wanted to see performed live and someone asked RM about it on a vLive and he said and I quote "That song is hard" LOL and when you hear it, you can kind of understand why, especially vocally with the song. It would be rough to do live. But as I said before, like you can't really go WRONG with any choice, everyone ARMY has favorites of course. Intro: Persona, Interlude: Shadow, and Outro: Ego really were a huge part of Map of the Soul: 7 as well and really highlights the rapline. Okay I wrote a novel again. Thanks again Bryan and Claude!

Claude definitely needs to hear ON next. It’s the next step in their journey after Black Swan. Black Swan is about recognising your Shadow, acknowledging that you have fears. ATTENTION SPOILER For those of you who haven't watched the 2022 FESTA yet What really got me after FESTA 2022 was that they really felt as described in Black Swan in 2020 and even earlier... This was supposed to be the gran finale of Chapter 1. Their plan was a world tour, solo work and mandatory military service. But Covid happened and they decided to stay for us - releasing music and making content to help us through the pandamic. During those two years they got even more burned out and during the Dinner they said that they kind of felt as if they lost what BTS stood for. T. T Which hit hard! We were so dependent on them, that they felt as if they can't let us go through this pandamic alone. That's why I'm in this ARMY sh*t for live! They support and care for every single member of ARMY. Borahae 💜 Apobangpo

I think you are absolutely right, but also I believe they also meant that they lost them way because audience rates demanded more and more music in English, a language that 6 of them they can't even understand. I think they start to feel pressure to write in English, anyone out there try to express your deepest feelings in an unknown language, of course you can't do that, so you end up arranging other people's lyrics and production and before you even realise your are a product if the industry, exactly what they never wanted to be. They suddenly find themselves with 3 English songs one after another, and don't get me wrong they are cheerful songs and you see them touch, not to mention that they are great performers, give them a ring tone and they will make it into a hit (actually Yoongi done that 🤣) What I am trying to say is that BTS is what it is with them faults and them wins and we have no right to change them or pressure them to be something else.

Thank you for the amazing reaction 💜 Black Swan is a song based off a quote by Martha Graham, a famous dancer. Her quote was « A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing, and that first death is the most painful » So here in this song bts is talking about their fear of losing their love and passion for music As you can notice suga opens up the song saying « the music no longer makes the heart race, that would be my first death I’ve been always afraid of » I also saw some theories about the « do your thang with me now » it’s like Bts is talking to their fans, asking them to support them, and the « what’s my thang tell me now » some people see it as if they represent how an artist can be oppressed by the « fans »that always try to control them Rm talked about how they were planning to take their hiatus during the era when black swan was released, but then COVID happened and they chose to stay to cheer up army They also talked about dynamite being an unplanned comeback, how they released that song just to bring some happiness During the festa 2022, they also talked about how they were feeling burnt-out, that they needed a break long ago and that they were finally having it So personally, I think that when black swan was released, bts were already suffering from this

Welcome back, Claude. Loved the reaction and so glad you enjoyed Black Swan. MOTS7 is the best album and there is not a "skip song" in it, however, Claude asked for what our favorite songs on it were and why, so my absolute favorite song on this album is 00:00 Zero O Clock. I can't think of a single person I know who has not in some way, shape or form had a disaster of a day that seeps into that night and bleeds into the next day and possibly ruining your week. The English version of the lyrics I have saved in the notepad on my phone to look at when I have a bad day as a reminder to myself to check my attitude and let a good sleep leave a bad day behind. Best lyrics in the song "When the second hand and the minute hand overlap, the world holds its breath for a very brief moment. Zero O'Clock"

Hi I am back. Good reaction, ty. I am glad BTS found u. Love the synchronicity. Not sure if u heard this but when u are rewborn u are reborn with others who are connected to u in some way. Each of u interact and learn from each other and i feel moments like what u shared are proof of this spiritual connection. =0} I have moments like this too with family and friends. This song has beautiful deep meaning of their lyrics. As you notice like lines " It would be my first death. That's what I'm afraid of ." It has that emotional theme of an artist fear for losing their passion for what they do. With this song BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. It's also inspired from Martha Graham, who said “A dancer dies twice once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” Now with the band on a break from group work and focusing more on solo projects (solo albums). We know this was also a hint to us that they were struggling. I hope u watch all the behind the scenes with Claude. No need to react. RM's shadow was also moving in a different way than he was. =0p Stay safe. - 2019 ARMY NY USA 💜 Jen W said on 6/7/22 Black Swan ballet: changing from white to black swan - growing up, losing innocence. Black Swan movie - sacrificing mental and physical health to reach the top. Shadow/mirror images - self reflection. Black Swan: Mainly written by RM, the one you like, is about their fears of losing all passion for music, either writing it or performing on stage. It's also based on a quote by Martha Graham who was an important figure in the world of modern dance, "A dancer dies twice. Once when they stop dancing and this death is more painful." They've been doing this for a long time now and for some of them it's all they've ever done from a young age but realized music is their life. MsBeatrice_81 said on 3/19/22 Fun fact: Before BTS began doing it, it wasn't normal at all for Korean idol groups to release songs with deeper meanings, discuss serious topics in their songs, acknowledge issues of vulnerability like burnout, depression or mental illness. It wasn't normal for idols to open up about their personal troubles at all. In fact, doing so got some idols thrown out of their companies. It was also not normal or common to have a running storyline/theme that is carried through multiple albums and/or MVs and songs. But BTS did it all so successfully, and broke those stigmas, to the point that now many other Korean idol groups have started trying to do those things, with varying degrees of sincerity and success. This song, its lyrics and MV are part of the "Shadow" portion of BTS's Map of the Soul era, in which they released albums and songs based on Carl Jung's theories regarding the Persona, Shadow, and Ego. This track is an exploration of their "shadow" selves' fear that they may someday lose their passion for their art - they ask if perhaps they are already losing it- and they wonder what comes after that "first death" of the loss of passion. In the end, they continue to fight for their passion and their art, claiming they won't be swept away by these fears again. I would encourage you to think about how counter-cultural BTS is being in songs like this: Not only are they dealing with topics that were taboo only a few years ago, but they're being unbelievably personally vulnerable, sincere and open. This is why we love them so much, and I'm sure you will, too! 💜 Example: A couple of weeks ago Jimmy Fallon had BTS on his late night show. They performed a song called Idol at This Idol performance at Gyeongbokgung Palace as a background and wearing hanboks. There are so many amazing location Rich with Ancient history. Here is a link to the idol performance, so you can see the background visual of the palace. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g752ns1-s77KoI0.html Sariel said on 3/1/22 The string instrument used is the Gayageum, a Korean zither.

As an Army - I want to say thank you for giving our boys a chance and listening to them. Bryan is a huge fan and trying to point out fifty things at once - I’ve been there, don’t be overwhelmed 😅😂 As a fan- I appreciate wanting to listen to songs for the lyrics. My mother has finally, after a year, started to ask me proper questions about my love of BTS and it’s been a journey explaining to her that though they have great hype songs and dance songs, they also have really deep lyrics, amazing metaphors and lyricism that has helped me a lot. I too found BTS at my lowest point, pretty sure God said ‘you’re ignoring me, try these 7 guys’ 😂 and my journey through the Love Yourself tour was amazing and filled with tears and the conclusion that for the first time in my life I can confidently and happily say ‘I love myself’ which turned out to be rather alarming to my therapist that I hadn’t felt that way, but that’s what they did for me. These boys acknowledge feelings and help you to process those feelings, they don’t sugar coat it or tell you to move on, they help you to work through those stages whether it be grief, learning to discover yourself, love yourself or to grow up. And there aren’t other artists, especially as Singers, who can say the same thing.

Please show him Shadow by Suga. If he is interested in the topic of accepting your Shadow, I think Suga describes what it is like to accept that part of himself. Black Swan really resonates with me. Music has been an important part of my life since I was 2. I even studied music in college. I was never interested in fame, just finding a way to reach someone on an emotional level. In my 30s, I suddenly got trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasms and atypical facial pain. It is unpredictable, excruciating, and can even prevent me from speaking during those episodes. Unfortunately, singing sometimes triggers a TN episode. I stopped singing. I stopped listening to music. I went into a deep depression. That's been almost 13 years ago. For years, I felt lost. About a year ago, I came across BTS again. I laughed and cried. I remembered that passion I had for music and that it never left. I can't always sing and mainly only sing at home or in the car. Sometimes it still causes pain to sing, but it's better than mourning the loss of not having music in my life. Anyways, that's why Black Swan means a lot to me.

I've said this before but I hopw you show this to your friend! “Black Swan” is inspired by a quote: “A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful”. “Black swan” is about their fear that some day they’ll lose their passion for music and this would be their first death. They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them. Ok, so... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelgänger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion. This song became even more heartbreaking for us after their FESTA Dinner 2022, when they announced they’re taking a break from making music as a group. They expressed that they had been feeling lost and unsure of their identity as a group since the MOTS: 7 (this song’s album) release and the plan to take a break had been in place since then. They planned on having their world tour (MOTS Tour, which got canceled due to COVID-19) and then taking a break to work on their solo music, not only to find their unique flavour as artists, but also to rekindle their passion for music. Reading the lyrics for Black Swan, it makes sense that RM cried after writing this song. It expresses their fears at the time, how they felt like they no longer had an identity and feared they’d die if they lost their passion for music. And ohhhh boy, Jimin's dance haha he did train in ballet, albeit very minimally and as part of his main focus, which was contemporary and that's what he mostly trained for during high school. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. This is further highlighted in the 2020 MAMA version of Black Swan, where he does a duet with Jungkook! (here's the link for a breakdown of the moment twitter.com/mintynkks/status/1335236325373448192?s=20&t=2C90i3inGV9MBv5dgoiYQA & twitter.com/sopeshopes/status/1567652963367239680?s=20&t=7xjj1LVpvBUJbNtYOWfnMg… Spoiler alert, since I dunno if you plan to react to the 2020MAMA performance. Which I HIGHLY recommend, it has an amazing performance of Dynamite as well). Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts + hiphop training. +idol training + his contemporary (and minimal ballet and Korean traditional) training. He does a lot of tricking and aerials you could see with his medialuna (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily over rotate and injure your ankles) and with his movements here twitter.com/pjmgem/status/1466261374355402757?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA and here twitter.com/jikookheart/status/1465173437589110788?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA, during the live performance, where he basically does a one-handed cartwheel to cover more space. Black Swan is one of my favourite songs from BTS!

Map of the Soul 7 is my favorite album too, but not because it was my first intro to them, but because it is AWESOME. ; ) I would say I'm an unusual fan, and their music is not what grabbed me. My teen daughter was clearly becoming OBSESSED with them back in 2019 and so I started to look into them just to figure out what was up. I just randomly watching a few things that KZfaq recommended, and I don't even remember what they were now, except I do very clearly remember the moment when I first noticed Jungkook and was like, "WHO is THAT?!" 😍 It was their dance practice of "Boy With Luv" for the James Cordon show--and I could not keep my eyes off of him. Truly love at first sight. 😂 But I still didn't particularly listen to them as a group--instead, I got hooked by their dance practice videos, Run BTS, and watching BTS reactors. I am a teacher and am always thinking of what's behind what we see, and it's really the "behind" that I most enjoy about BTS. During COVID lockdowns they were my "happy place" and I realized that I enjoy who they are as people and that they are genuinely making the world a better place at the moment. Oh, there is more I could say, esp. because I'm using BTS lyrics and discussion of ARMY in my HS Senior Honors English class as we discuss how people (esp. post-COVID) are suffering from loss of identity, meaning, purpose--and somehow BTS seems to be filling the void for many. But morning break is over and must run to my next class! : ) Enjoying your reactions!

Recommend Shadow off of MOTS 7 album, since you talked about accepting your Shadow exist but accepting that it's part of you, and only then can you move forward and not drown in it.

May I suggest watching lyrics video and then official music video/ live stage? This way you are aware of lyrics and then can enjoy beautiful visual clip next, without so many interactions. Yes, your video will be longer, but to me it makes more sense...

Hi Claude thanks for sharing your insights. Please ask Brian for Daechwita, Agust D, the Last, first love, Outro:Tear and of course the Cyphers( if he doesn't do Cyphers with you, run.... he is not Brian, it must be someone else🤣) Although start with Cyphers is like starting a course with the dessert. Ask the main course first.
