😆sorry for the typo in the 1st slide of the video as i was typing fast in the editing stage & didn’tcha ge I back 😂
This is a small Rubbermaid Slid Lid Shed that I converted over to a roll off roof observatory. It's very small and compact but it works for me and all of my gear. I wanted something very small and with a small footprint in my backyard. This setup has saved me so much time with setup and when done taking images of targets. I got just about all parts on Amazon and a lot of great ideas from Astrobloke's channel as he uses a plastic shed as well.

Nice job. Looks like you thought of about everything. Small suggestion -you may want to put some wire screen around the holes you cut for the tripod legs to keep small critters out. Congratulations on a cool project.

That is absolutely fantastic. I’m just starting out in the hobby and was thinking of doing something very similar with the same slide top shed. This is great and it’s an inspiration for me down the road. Maybe next summer. Thanks for sharing your creativity.

I love the simplicity of that dual-purpose flap and solar panel holder. I miss using my C8 on the EQ6. I switched to a wider refractor which is great for many things, but not planets, small DSO's and lunar close-ups. I really need to setup a secondary mount for my C8... Smart call on the golden rod. I'm using a TG365 cover to great effect but for some weird reason pollen and dust still manages to accumulate on my gear despite the cover. Maybe I really should take cues from your setup. I'd love to motorized the top so that I can go full remote.
@deejaybustab
@deejaybustab 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! I still have my 80mm refractor for wide field as well. For now I’m going after all these smaller galaxies for the moment with the 8SE. I’ll see this spring how the pollen goes in here. I know I’ll get some in this shed so hopefully it’s not too crazy 😁

That's a great idea. I am in the process of planning out a pier/observatory so hunting for solutions. Being that you have a permanent structure now, why not mount a mini pc under the tripod (I 3D printed a holder that connects to the circular tray between the legs). Then use say AnyDesk to remote in to it whilst sitting on the couch. ;)

Looks great, wonder what the total cost was. Have you thought about a way to seal up around the tripod feet to the floor? It seems like you could get rid of a great deal if moisture if those 3 holes were removed. Another thought is to just have the fans on when its hot inside, so you dont pull in moist ground air all the time?

DeeJay, I'm about to put the tracks in and was just wondering if you could tell about the dimensions of the cuts you made to install the 2x4 and tracks. I'm trying to get an idea from the video but not sure how much to cut in order to install the track. Sorry for the hassle, but much appreciate your help. Thank you.
@deejaybustab
@deejaybustab Жыл бұрын
The 2x4s I only cut 1 side on the observatory all because I installed the solar fans way before I decided to make the roof roll off. So for the other side I didn’t cut the 2x4 I only laid the track on top of it & screwed it down. The side where I had to cut the 2x4 I just cut it to the width of the track just on the inside so if the shed & I got lucky that the track & 2x4 ended up fitting just next to the fans. Now if I knew I was going to make this a roll off roof from the start then I would have moved the fans further over so I wouldn’t have to cut 1 of the 2x4s. If you check out my last video where I show deep space photos, I show the 2x4s a little bit better in the video. Hope this helps explain it a little bit.

Why was it necessary to slide the back half as well. Wouldn't just the first half have sufficed?
@deejaybustab
@deejaybustab 2 ай бұрын
The shed is actually smaller than it looks & for my setup with the dew shield on my 8” it will clip the roof if the entire roof wasn’t removed out of the way. Maybe this wouldn’t happen if you have a smaller refractor like a 60mm.
