Minor leagues are rough. I work for a low A team and all the time I see the away team buying food from the stadium or coming back with a pizza from the gas station. When you are the home team, some host family’s will make great meals but still there are not a lot of options. Respect to these guys just seeing them grind all day and get the paycheck they do!

It was really makes you respect the guys who weren’t high draft picks (meaning they probably got a nice signing bonus) who sat in the Minor Leagues for years hoping for a chance to one day play in the major leagues. It also explains why a lot of guys have side hustles. For example, Randy Dobnak of the Twins was an Uber driver on the side before he was regularly at the big league level lol

I remember working for a Low A team about 20 years ago (piedmont Phillies/ boll weevils).. we'd sneak the players hot dogs and burgers. It's rough for sure, especially in kannapolis, where everything closes at 9pm lol. At least the visiting team had an IHOP beside their hotel..

You nailed it Matt. I played 4 years minor league ball up to AA in the early 80's and I was making $500-$750/ month. I always eat fairly clean at home and even when I reported to rookie camp, I realized after a week I needed to find a way to eat like I did at home. The number one thing I lived on was eggs. Breakfast lunch or dinner I went through 5 dozen a week. They were cheap and a great source of protein. Rice, oatmeal and microwaved potatoes gave me the carbs or starches as they were known then and tons of water. I hope with today's investment in young players, teams are taking nutrition serious at the lower levels.

If you adjust that for inflation, it's possible you got paid more than minor leaguers do right now.

Nobody forcing minor leaguers to play, they can go work a real job if money was so important. Any of the players worth a damn already have a nice signing bonus anyways that they can easily live off until they get big league contract. All these other guys should be happy they even get get paid to play a game with such great players.
@brettlawlor8921

@@BoleDaPole No minor leaguers are asking for hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions at this juncture. All they want is enough for respectable housing and more nutritional food so they can better work their craft. It isn't really about the money, it's about the principle. Major league teams view these players as assets. If you take care of your assets, they will take care of you. Would you ignore diagnostics on your computer and then get upset or perplexed when it's not running properly? No, you wouldn't. MLB teams need to invest more down on the farm so that they have a better chance of developing quality major leaguers.

@@danr154 this is the accom provided to new players and farm league players in npb, they all live in these dorms to begin with until they have reached a certain level and can go at it on their own kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5aRiKSVzsquYqM.html And the food looks decent, the worst paid player probably gets around $30,000 and they have all this provided Ohtani would have had $1,000,000 or so signing bonus, $200,000 base pay plus incentives but he didnt have to worry about a place to stay or enough food to eat or clubhouse dues Ohtani may well have had a big signing bonus if he signed with a mlb organisation straight out of high school, but was he really mentally ready to go at it alone?
