Very useful video thank you! I priced the tearing rulers and they are $20 Australian dollars. I took a 50c plastic ruler and cut the edge with my big scissors varying the edge. It works brilliantly!

WOW...it never occurred to me that a sewing machine would be a tool for a junk journal. I'm not even sure i understand what a junk journal is for...but I really enjoy watching these videos of them, so perhaps because they make people happy is the function??. Barbara, about the tearing papers with a ruler, ionic made a deckled edge tearing Cutter similar to the straight lines papaer cutter but with deckled edge .

I would suggest that with the needle threader clamping the other side so it doesn’t get warped by the clamp

You can take a plastic ruler and ding up the edge to get a rough edge. Using a brick or something hard.

My stencils are store similarly - all in one "Iris" scrapbook paper bin, but it is bursting at the seams right now. I've seen people put them in binders, but I don't think that would work for me. So, I go through them every time I want to find something different. I may try putting similar ones in manila folders inside the bin. Maybe that would help organize a little better. Anyway, loved the video. I've been paper crafting since 2017, but I just made my first ever junk journal!

I love seeing your Journals as you’re flipping through looking for something special. I enjoy seeing how things really make a difference in your Journals. Like pockets, Belly Bands, clusters, sewing. I love sewing things on a Journal page. Or making a tag fancier. Some day I’m gonna make myself a little book to keep needles and thread in. I forget about it until I see yours. The little book for needles is so sweet. And seeing your journals again was such a treat. Very useful video, because is really about the basics and the quality of the supplies, which is essential. One of my favourite tools are the tweezers (because are so helpful) - and even for these little things the quality is important. Thank you!

I was so happy to realize I have almost all the tools you mentioned! I did learn some great ways to use the threads and fabric. I have anabindance of quilting scraps that I think will be great for so many of the projects you described. I have not made a fabric journal cover, but I think I'm ready to try it. I think the paper bag is the perfect foundation. I'd see fabric covers using cereal boxes and chip board, but I don't like the really stiff with the soft. Another project to add to my to-do list. Thanks for sharing your expertise.❤❤❤

Art Glitter is the name of the company. They make incredible glitter. Designer Dries Clear is the name of the glue. I've been using both of them for probably 15 years or more. I love your essentials list.

I have A5, A4 & A3 folders with plastic sleeves to keep my different-sized stencils (in theory - in practice I have to actually move most of them into their folders as I’m a terrible stencil hoarder lol) & little photo albums for small die cutters, although they don’t work as well as the stencil sleeves. You could probably make yourself some great stencil folders of different sizes. If you use different sized key rings instead of a pre-made ring binder like you used for Dephemerember, you can make folders that will be a lot easier to wrangle than the ones that come with smaller rings. The key rings come in a heap of different sizes & you can get some really big ones. You only have to wrestle the plastic sleeves on the key rings once, since you can just take the stencils out & leave the sleeves in place, so buying the ones that don’t click open but have 2-3 layers of metal isn’t a problem. Then it’s just a matter of gluing a sturdy strip of chipboard or something to hold the key rings in place against the spine, or you could hand-sew them onto the spine using a sturdy thread. And since you’re super organised, you could stencil a bit of the pattern on a page to keep inside the sleeve so you know what goes where, or label them. And you could stencil a sample of each on your inside cover or make some index sheets so you don’t have to flip through the whole book every time you want to find a particular stencil. In my head I do organised, it just doesn’t tend to translate to real life …/sigh. Hopefully you make a stencil folder & can inspire me to get mine organised! 😁

I store my stencils in... Hmm, not sure what they're called... Clearfiles? Books of clear plastic sleeves. You can get them in different sizes. I put in a piece of light card to give the stencil a firm base and little more protection. Works well. 😊

Enjoyed your essentials video. I wanted to experiment with something new to me. I bought some clear embossing powder and 2 embossing ink pens. I don't have a heating tool, but I do have a hair blower. Well, it did not work. I tried again, but then the blower turned off? Didn't work again. So, now I may have to invest on a heating tool. Thank you for sharing your video.

You're so organized!!! Your stencil drawer probably really bugs you. Maybe you could use a binder with plastic sleeves. A standard 8 1/2 x 11 could work for a lot of them, and the larger ones could stay in your drawer.

Hello Barbara I would like to share my storage of my stencils maybe it'll help you. I use a 3-inch three ring binder and Page protectors with a piece of colored copy paper or colored cardstock so I can slip one on each side of the cardstock in one page protector protector. I keep it on a shelf like a book and when I need one I could just thumb through the pages and find what I need. I hope this is helpful love ya 😘😘

Thank you, Barbara, for such a valuable video. I particularly enjoyed seeing examples in your journals. You are very good with the sewing machine, I’m still perfecting that! Do you still make splotches with TH stains?! I thought that was so clever & fun! When you were showing all your examples of black ink, mostly numbers, it reminded me of one of your other videos you did on numbers, cutting them out of magazines, etc. I really took that to heart & cut for days! I doubt I’ll ever run out of numbers, I have big ones, little ones, TH paper, advertisements… I always think of you when I use them!! Hope you had a nice Easter! Erica❤

Dear Barbara hi! I loved your most essentials video and flipping through your journals for all the lovely elements!❤❤❤ Regarding the organization of your stencils, and since i'm a stencil junkie too 😁😁😁😁, i have found a way that somehow helps me from an old video of the channel "let's get inkie" (the host is so sweet too!), where she uses a folder/binder with plastic A4 cases (like those used for keeping presentations) for storing stencils by category, for example, all letters and numerics together or in sequential cases, small flowers, large flowers, leafs, stars, hearts, abstract designs etc. The nice thing with that is that you can choose your own categories and make them as detailed or not as you wish in reference with your own stencils. Furthermore, you can divide small and large stencils to different binders or different categories to different binders. I have followed that organization, and it really helped me as i can flip through the binder to find the stencil that i need. The only disadvantage that i have found is that when you buy new stencils, you might not have enough space to put them in your binder at the right place, so you might need to move things around. Of course, this could be addressed by using binders that you can add A4 plastic cases in between. The one that i used is pre-set. Hope this idea will help you too. Love your video, thanks! Just an idea: I organize my stencils in presentation books. They come in different sizes with black paper in each clear sleeve which is convenient to have two stencils by sleeve and see the patterns very well.

It's a great heavy duty machine, wishing I'd gone for a denim one. SO HAPPY I have that guillotine now after years of dodgy but expensive trimmers! It's awesome! Lol I agree with all of these (slightly different on the glues, I like cosmic shimmer acrylic, and it doesn't shimmer lol) they're things we can't make ourselves and more essential than a lot of fancier supplies. Yes, just 'needle threader'. I hang my stencils on hooks from a shelf now, it made a HUGE difference. I haven't converted my heat tool yet 🙈. Great list! Such a great supply video. I've now bought a crop-o-dile, and I love it! Thinking of buying a paper trimmer, but I need to have a larger place to craft (planning stages), so it was great to see yours properly. And that there's no need to buy a large one. I wonder what the hole size for the punch that matches hole reinforces is? In centimeters/milimeters, if you know... That's a bit of a problem, I find, when you need to cut several times to get a hole large enough for the reinforcement. Good to know about the heat tool too. I've seen you use it, of course, but any way. Great video! 😊

Thanks! I thin down PVA glue with a little bit of water and brush it on the surface to add the fabric on. Works like a charm 😊

I love all your videos, so fun and informative. I have not heard you speak on the bias and grain of paper. Can you tell me if you take that into consideration yourself when making journal pages? If so what would the concern be? I have not heard to much about it, only one person that seems to pay attention to that aspect of paper. being a quilter in the past we had to consider it but I did not know that it was a thing with paper. Thank You

Hi Barbara. Thank you so much for sharing your expert and honest opinions with us all. I find it very helpful - being a fervent Junk Journal junior - on a budget. 😊 It's very positive to hear what might be worth saving for, and investing in. Which brings me to one piece of kit that I know is not exactly essential, but lovely to have - and that is a die-cutter/embossing machine. I've been looking at a lot of different options on line, and am quite confused. If I'm starting out, should I focus on just a die-cutting machine? And if so, is it false economy to get a small one as I've noticed that some dies won't fit in certain models. Or would you recommend saving up for something bigger that has both functions? So many questions!! Maybe, this could be a topic for another video offering your very valued guidance. With best regards as always, from NZ. 🧡💚🤎

Thank you! I’m no expert for those machines. I have always only had my Sizzix Foldaway die cut machine and I’m very happy with it. Maybe you could get a used one. Die cut machines also emboss- you just use an embossing folder instead of the dies, so it’s just one machine that does it all! 😊. I would get a regular size one instead of first buying a small one and then having to buy the big one anyway because you want to use bigger dies/embossing folders.

@@49dragonflies Dear Barbara - thank you sooooooo much for taking the time to reply with such detail. I've learnt a lot already. For example, I never knew that any of the machines I've been looking at could perform both functions! I just assumed that if the title said 'die-cutting' machine, it only did that!! 🙄 And yes, with this in mind, buying a model that takes regular folders would be most sensible. Yay!!! Now I can look again - with this new knowledge. Thank you. 🧡💚🤎

I’m going to chime in on this. As a past Stampin up demonstrator, I’ve had both the big and the large machine. I sold my larger machine based on small space. So I didn’t need two and I opted for the smaller. I cut my larger embossing folders down to fit and it didn’t kill my soul. I will make do with my die cuts that fit. I’ve always been the type that has to have all the stuff. I’m still a lot like that but have adjusted my needs to reflect a need for minimalism due to living in a travel trailer. Organization helps me to be able to horde a bit more 😉.

@@theresaconway-hayes Thank you for your input. 😊 I'm still a relative newbie in the JJ world as I only started about a year and a half ago. And, at the moment, it's an unpaid hobby - although I hope that may change one day. I'm also quite cautious with my purchases. I want to 'get going' with lots of different ideas, but I don't want to spend money on an item that is unsuitable or under utilised. So, I try to research and think about my needs - what I would like, and what will (hopefully) work. I had been looking at small machines - partly because I make a lot of small journals to give away as gifts, but I don't want to find myself limited later. Soooo, I think it's back to the drawing board - armed with all the good information and advice I have now received. 👍👍🧡💚🤎

They are called needle threaders.

Originally it was developed to glue glitter, so the name is perfect. The fact that we use it for gluing other things does not warrent a reason to change its name.
