You had valid criticisms against indie music, but I also think the genre has some pretty significant redeeming attributes. I've always appreciated the huge amount of sonic experimentation in the genre... new instruments, influences, etc. surface regularly, whereas I'm always waiting for something new to happen in my favourite genre, pop punk, and when it does, it's always met with so much blowback and resistance. It also seems to me that indie music has long had more people of colour and women in it than most genres of rock, so they must be doing something right culture-wise. That said, I remember the obnoxious Pitchfork days... a lot of indie fans probably haven't heard much criticism come their way and have no idea how to deal with it haha. Try being a scene kid in '08!

I watch a lot of your videos (I’d say most of the new releases and a large part of the archive) and my suggestion is that people can get angry and / or sad not because of the message (to which you appeal here: “do you disagree that copying someone isn’t progressive?” I think most people would agree) but because of the way you talk about it: you troll / stereotype / make fun / talk shit about stuff you don’t like and music is indeed an important part of people’s lives and identity and they can get sensitive because of that. Me personally I don’t care about it - it’s just your style and as a fan of tool and “deft ones” I believe that you often miss the value / point cause you’re not trying to dig into the stuff you’re initially not interested in (surprise-surprise). Not saying that you should be nice to everyone (and freedom of speech etc etc) say what you want - but it’s kinda strange to see you being upset with this reaction when you talk like that to people.. PS never bothered to dislike any of the videos on YT - unless it was total crap which isn’t the case of your clips PPS It’s also kinda surprised me how protective (maybe the wrong word) you are in the comments - I expected you to take stuff easier with your style haha

I would say the main problem with the indie video was how he criticized the actual music. All of these video listed have subjective points on contentions that have validity, some that may be a bit shortsighted that could have could have been communicated better but of all the videos I'm surprised he haven't talked about his video on "THE TRUTH ABOUT JAPANESE METAL" pretty sure Finn had more dislikes than likes on it. Perhaps because it was on the second channel. Out of all the videos he's made made that one was the one that was actually objectively contentious and maybe harmful even since he's accused people of liking foreign culture music as being fetishtistic instead of just liking the music. I remember a really funny interaction he had with one of the commenter Sophie Claire. an asian woman. summarizing his dislike as a projection of his own insecurities Finn coming back with a really horrible take. Really cute interaction, gotta read it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdN5h6ai196-f58.html&lc=Ugw7nS1mJneBowIngbh4AaABAg While that video is the worst thing you've ever done, I still love you though you lovely stoic punk chiseled boomer, like a crack on a majestic Greek statue. 😘

Yeah most videos on this channel you are jokingly roasting, but it seemed like you were being pretty serious on the Japanese metal video, and that you really think all the fans are nerdy perverts with Japan fetishes. Big fan of most of your videos, I think you're really good at music commentary and making overall entertaining videos. Don't always agree with you, but different strokes. Just my take on some of it, and it may not be your case, but I think some people don't like being generalized and placed into specific demographics and stereotypes as to why they like certain types of music. There's a lot of "this type of music is for -x- type of person and people who like this music are this way". It's not always (probably not normally) the case. I know it's meant to be taken as a joke. In my own opinion, I feel like at times based on your videos that you may base your opinion on and write off an entire genre of music based on what you perceive the fanbase to be instead of listening to an artist's music and deciding if you like that band or not. I guess it why personally I've always liked your videos on history of generes and bands and what may have happened to them instead of videos making fun of stereotypes of music fans.

I know when I've discovered who you were a part of how I got out of the dogma how "if it doesn't have guitars, how can I possibly know if it's good?" and that's in part of you being positive towards rap and pop artists and I changed my mentality to "If I like the music what does it matter what genre it is" and I remember not being upset but rather surprised that for a short while your videos switched to a more negative focus even if it was bands of genres that I don't particularly liked. Yet again you're 100% in the right to make any content you want and you're 100% in the right the like or dislike whatever you want. I think fandoms in general needs to chill whenever somebody doesn't like the things they like. P.s.: I loved the video on racism btw. One of my favorite and one of the most needed and I love that you brought the perspective of somebody who's not white. I didn't realized people acted that way in the scene before that video. P.s.s.: Danzig IS short, it's a fact.

I admit, I don't always agree with some of your opinions, but I think that's part of the appeal of your channels. I like having my opinions and tastes challenged. Plus your closer to my age than most people that put up content that's not dated to when I was a teen. I may be older than you, but my music taste has aged with me. I'm not sitting around listening to all my old 80s and 90s music and claiming it's better than all the new stuff. I admit that I'm a metal head, but I'm a metal head that grew up on punk, hardcore, and skate music. You just keep being honest and being you and you'll keep all of us around that enjoy that about the videos.

Finn, I can honestly say that your videos have helped me open up to different issues, and different genres. I don’t always agree with you and sometimes think your criticism missed something, but I feel like your takes always come from a reasonable place and are very thought provoking. Even if there is cause for disagreement that is not cause for hate. Some people just suck I suppose. It is the internet though so try not to take it too personally. Keep up the videos man.

I think the big thing with the prog video is that it was using the blanket of prog to talk about specifically shreddy stuff when things like Haken, Gojira, and a bunch of other bands in that vain exist. great points at the shreddy stuff though. Actual songs are cool

Indie rock is such a huge genre- I can see some of the, "good ones," feeling lumped in w/the hipster douches & getting pissed. Generalizations can be a tough thing cause there are some great things in the genre. But I haven't seen the video since back then so I don't remember your tone/how hard you went @ um. AFAIR you weren't being that brutal.

As a dude born in 85 in socal, Torrance, you’re so damn spot on with music scenes, and have a breadth of insider knowledge I’ve not seen elsewhere being so accessible. My brother in law is D. Pearson and he’s made a good name for himself in LA as an engineer but I don’t know if he knows this much LoL. Being objective about music is part of what makes it great. You can’t please 100% of people ever. Thanks dude!

@@yourmomscomment pay attention to the newer bands compared to the older ones most of them have only 50,000 to 100,000 facebook likes the older bands have been around for 10 years and have 500,000 to 900,000 like on facebook. The newer bands are not as big as some of the older ones like suicide silence and whitechapel or thy art is murder. Even for the pop punk bands they may have 100,000 to 500,000 likes the most. bands like the story so far, state champs, man overboard, knuckle puck have mostly 100,000 to 500,000 the most. Bands like blink 182, green day, sum 41, simple plan have like 1 million likes on facebook. Numbers don't lie.

The Racism in Metal video is quite moderate and reasonable, overall, and mostly just points that racism in metal is a valid issue. You make it very clear that is not all or most of the community, but a significantly sizeable minority, and you back it up, and even bring someone who has actually lived the black experience to comment on it. This was a great thing to do, as it comes from someone directly effected. The indie one, I personally feel gets a tad bit judgemental. I believe this was unintentional, and you have been better about avoiding coming off that way in more recent videos, so kudos for taking the more level-headed criticism (not the mean, angry ones, which are sadly a lot of them) as a chance to become even better. With BABYMETAL, I think it is worth noting that, in their early days, metal elitists went after them HARD, and it likely caused much of the fanbase to become extremely defensive. I will admit I even overreacted a bit in the comments on that one. I think my basic criticisms we're valid, but I kind of implied that you hadn't done due diligence on looking into the band and the fanbase, but later came to realize that I myself can't stand much of the fanbase (kind of like how I am a Star Wars fan who is put off by most Star Wars fans).

Finn, I know that I speak for more than myself but I'm so proud and grateful for you calling out racism and sexism in the music industry and scene! It takes balls and you are using this platform for more than just music and culture. Actually I recently got a ton of hate and even a threat for making a joke about sexism and mansplaining on Facebook, being a woman certainly didn't help me in that case lol. Nothing will change if we turn a blind eye to hate, they can say or do whatever shitty bigoted malarkey and then cry about it when people inevitably react negatively lol. I have zero sympathy for a person who whines about the consequences for their bigotry. Racists cry over the dumbest crap and then say you're an SJW, like wanting to help society progress is an insult lol. Nonsense You are fantastic and a very attractive guy even though you self deprecate a lot; I do the same so I get it dude. No disrespect to your wife of course, it's just a genuine compliment. You're a great guy, firm in your morals, and empathetic. Nietzsche said "a man has no ears for that to which experience has given him no access" which is paraphrased probably, but it truly sums up the root cause: lack of empathy and self centeredmess. We love you dude, please never change! Love, a female viewer 🖤💚

Been watching since 2019, and i actually like when you have an opinion I don't agree with, it's healthy to hear another person's perspective. Music is subjective and what you might think sucks I or someone else might like and I don't take offense if you don't like it. I remember you commented on a Finger 11 song a while ago, saying that the song sucks and that the lead singer looks like he repairs photocopiers. I disagreed, I actually like them, but I loved your comment and thought it was hilarious. Take care man!

As someone who went through an Indie phase, I also hated the fans. Like me and my bands singer got really into it because guys like Wild Nothing and The Kooks were doing some super Funky, Shoe-Gazey, Pretty music. But the moment you go to the shows it's just a bunch of people who care more about each other's fashion and what Beer the other was drinking than the actual music.

The point is to say what you want to say, present arguments and then let the video live a life of it's own and let it speak for itself. I wrote dozens of music articles and I stopped reading the comment sections a long time ago, since everytime there is someone manifesting their superiority by saying that I 'know nothing about XYZ'. Well, I certainly don't know everything about everything, but most of the times these people are just reacting to the headline or first paragraph probably without even reading the whole thing. I guess it is similar with your videos. The worst thing is no reaction at all. Keep doing what you do.

the problem with so many of these heavily disliked videos is that they're genuinely good videos. people in the comments of your streamchat mention that it's good you're being introspective, looking back at your less popular content, but really, these are more of an example of the internet being waves of tribalism crashing against each other. you've also been very open with why some of your lesser-viewed videos didn't catch on. At the end of the day, I'm glad you're going to keep doing you, and that you have the skin to handle the hate that comes your way.
