I have a 2015 650i. I read all about the V8’s but I think the Gran Coupe is one of the most gorgeous cars I’ve ever seen! I knew they changed everything about the N63’s internals, crankshaft, pushrods, pistons, cams, etc… now it’s a N63tu, technical update. So I was able to talk to a former head mechanic at the local BMW dealership. He told me that BMW recalled every car with that motor that had under 100k miles and replaced the entire valve trains at no cost to the owner. One reason all high end cars get a bad rap is people buying high mileage cars that are out of warranty and haven’t been properly maintained. Then they find out how much maintenance is and don’t keep up with it. These are high performance engines that need to be maintained properly. It’s not a pushrod Chevy V8 that will go 300k. Don’t buy one if it doesn’t have low miles, a good maintenance record and if you can’t afford to maintain it.

You should put that warranty company on blast, so we all will know not to buy a warranty from them.

For anyone else reading this, I'm a car guy and have also spent over a decade at a claims center that handled premises insurance for new and used auto dealers here in the states. In this event the OP takes us thru, basically, your 3rd party lied to you about "the new" person that denied your claim without approval. Behind the scenes, NO CLAIM gets denied without a regional supervisor authorising the denial. If that claims person handling your file is a new person - they definatly dont have ANY authority to deny anything, without that claim file being roundtabled by their regional supervisor and maybe one other senior adjuster. Your 3rd party insurance only became friendly after the BMW rep called them and let them know you were taking them to court. All claim files are handled as if they are going to court. Most automotive 3rd party insurance carriers dont allow you to take them to a real court; they allow you to take them to an Arbitration venue, and their Arbitration decision is final! You agree to that when you buy their policy, and sign it. And every position in the Arbitration is filled with Voluntary personel. That personel are always other insurance ppl. Good for your BMW dealer for standing by you and good for you getting your atty involved. Most insurance carries wont lift a finger after a denial unless an atty sends a letter that they, the carrier, are now beung sued. Once a claim thats been denied receives that atty's letter, the file is then transferred from the simple liability claims adjuster to a senior adjuster that handles legal liability claims that have gone to court; its a different line of coverage that requires an adjuster familiar with the state/court that is handling the legal issue at hand. The insurance carrier usually then contracts one of the many law offices to represent them in court: and this comes at a cost. Your 3rd party insurance carrier, in an attempt to forgo the expense of an atty to represent them, knew they couldnt defend a defenseless denial in a cout of law.., and are now your "freind" working to get your car fix'd. Welcome to the legal world

I’m sorry you had to go through what you did, I’m here in Wisconsin and the dealership had a policy that they wouldn’t work on anything under 2010,and my 750iL was a 2006 and my warranty was under insurance and they left me hanging I had to pay for it myself like $3000 or more and later my engine locked up I wish I could have thought of threatening them with seeking legal counsel you brilliant man you got them to honor there agreement good job 👍🏾

Here in the UK, many used car dealers have an agreement with a particular 3rd party warranty provider; the dealer gets to offer a 3 month basic warranty cheaply (or free) but gives the upsell to supposedly better tiers. If you read the terms and exclusions with some specific failures in mind it often amounts to no coverage on those failures. From memory they exclude manufacturing defects, design defects, wear and tear, corrosion, accidental damage, there's not a lot else that can cause a failure. I've known two people attempt to claim for different issues, and both times the claim was rejected. I've seen a lot of forum traffic about rejected claims and not one person ever seems to have had a claim accepted. I understand manufacturer-backed warranties are better, but when I got a quote for a Mercedes warranty on an old-but-not-yet-classic Mercedes, it was an order of magnitude more expensive as they actually cover stuff.

Class action lawsuit against those engines got me to pay only 2.4k from the 12k bill originally. If the car fails the compression test you get to pay only 2.4K. And you also get a 2 year warranty. Happened with my 13 550i. Got a 15 now with 55k miles and runs like a dream.

Glad you got out of that nightmare. Ive been buying and driving new 5 Series V8 powered sedans since 2001 (540,545,545, & 550). My N63 initially had its share of issues, but of course is also the most powerful. My 7 year extended BMW warranty recently expired, so now away it must go. Hello Carmax.

Hey Dude. Australia here. Great video. Recently purchased 640i convertible and did buy 3rd party warranty for the reasons you mention. Your video confirms that but also highlights what you need to do if the warranty company starts to try and get out of it. Keep on them and threaten legal action. Great video. Keep it up!

If y’all really want a 650i make sure to change out these T shaped parts for metal ones. They’re on top of the intake manifold. They’re turbo coolant line connectors and they’ve been known to crack and cause coolant leaks. Also another way to help prevent engine failure is to change out the oil at least every 5000 miles. It will will prevent or reduce carbon build up. These engines are amazing at performance. But they can be touchy at times. But if you do regular maintenance and don’t redline it everyday or drive when it’s still warming up your engine should be fine. Also I’d stay away from 2012 models as they are a little bit more touchy.

Keep changing your oil frequently - within reason. What I do for my 335 is I take the recommended BMW official yearly oil change interval and chop it in half to get my personal oil change interval. Also change your transfer case oil and diff oil; I did my front diff (cause I have an xdrive) oil and transfer case oil at (80 000 km - which is about 50 000 miles). This is in fact the official number that my BMW dealership gave me after I prodded them (first they said its lifetime oil; but then when I said it is not a lease and I own the car and want to run the car for 200 000 plus miles they gave me 80k km or 50k miles). The 650 is a heavy car, so it's transmission takes a lot of wear and tear. Take care of it!! Besides the transfer case oil change cost me $120 CAD and another $120 for a front diff oil change; the alternative is a broken part well that's going to be exorbitant. Good luck.

Having owned a few BMW's and being a qualified BMW motorcycle tech I will say BMW are a passion not a practical solution. All have issues but you have to ask yourself is it worth it? For me, yes! I am currently running a 530i Msport which has had issues also but I love it. You're totally right about the warranty as saved my bacon a few times. Living in New Zealand the roads are fantastic and a road trip in a Toyota just wouldn't cut it for me. 650i is what I have my eye on as the family getting older now so won't need the space and love GT cars as so ridiculous as no room, big and thirsty but that smile on your face is the whole point IMHO. Good thing you were able to get the motor swapped. I’m a mechanic, but with the N63B44TU (or any version for that matter) I would look at it as an engine swap if anything were to go wrong. You’re looking at around $5-7000 replace the motor provided you can do the swap. For reference, my 335i daily I have cost $6200 used😂 But otherwise I would say get the 640i or a warranty if you can’t swap the motor.

Bro I had the same problem but with my 2013 550i it's the n63 engine BMW had a quote-unquote recall of that engine for catastrophic failure of certain parts. If your car was between 60 and 100000 miles it was covered under the class action suit the bang settlement. As I speak my car is at the dealership getting evaluated as to what happened. My car did exactly what yours did. I had a quote around $16,000 to replace the engine and certain parts. This engine was and still is covered under the class action suit.

Sage advice on the 3rd party warranty. I sought quotes for mine but got busy and while taking my wife out to dinner recently the engine seized up on my m6 gc.

Yeah the N63 is known to be unreliable. I just had mine in the shop the turbo oil return line had removed itself, & my crankcase ventilation hoses were frayed & snapped.

Wow I'm going through this exact same thing right now. The only difference is my car cut off on the highway but there were no warning lights. My car only has 85k miles on it. I had the car towed to my house. It seemed like it needed a battery, so i bought one. It started right up, but i could hear a tapping sound. I then called the warranty company to insure i was covered. I then had it towed to the BMW dealership. I drove it on to the flat bed, but they couldn't get to it for a few days. When they did get to it, it would not start.The warranty company has sent a guy out to check the oil and antifreeze levels, which were good, and to take pictures. I just gave the BMW dealership permission to proceed with the tear down. When the mechanic drained the oil he stated that there were a lot of metal shavings present. Now I'm waiting on the tear down to be done so they can send the warranty guy out again to see the damage. All of this and I didn't have the car over 2 months 😕

I had the same problem with my 550i and I had to fork over a good amount of money. BMW left me out there to dry. They do not stand behind their product at all. I love driving them but hate having to engage with them as a company. They know full well the problems with the engine's seizing and do nothing about it.

i was very fortunate to buy a 2015 750 from a elder neighbor . he serviced the car every 500 miles religiously. "Oil changes" he rarely drove it but always kept up oil changes and tire replacements. he only had 12k miles and i bought it from him for a STEAL. today the car has almost 75 k miles and ive only had some gaskets replaced out of cautionary. but the thing is i only pay a 100 deductible and everything is repaired. BMW service is phenominal. Absolutely the BEST in the business. But before my warranty runs out i will depart it and move on to something newer.

I don't know what brand of oil you use but, my Volvo S60 just bit the dust yesterday running off of Pennzoil approaching 6k miles. From what I've been told that brand of oil is notorious for burning up European cars. I had previously only used Castrol but, there were 3 hour waits to get into a decent shop. So I ended up going to a JiffyLube. Kicking myself hard right now....Sorry to hear about your situation. Glad you were able to get it resolved :)

Beautiful car but this review just talked me out of purchasing one. I can’t imagine the mental stress of having gone through this or having t.o possibly having to come out of pocket for 20k in repairs. I’m glad things worked out well for you.

Great video. Bmws are notorious for having issues. I know the bmw fan boys don't want to hear this but it's unfortunately true. Overall if you take care of them, they will be OK. Endurance and car shield is what I've used for years and they both have been great to work with.

I own two BMWs with the same n63tu 50i engine, a 2015 x5 and 2016 x6. Both were rock solid in the two years we had them but I was surprised to see that the x6 did not warn me of low oil. It just happened that I ran an oil check one day the it told me it was low on oil and add 2qts. Ever since I'm checking oil frequently. Based on this and your story, I think what likely happened in your case is the engine did run dry. Glad it sorted out for you, the 50i engine is a blast!!!

I had the same problem with my CPO 2013 535i xdrive. I replaced the motor on my own dime for a pretty penny, $10,000. I have no warranty. Curious to know what company you used

brother I myself had 3 bmws 335is which was the best and fan to drive, 535i and X5 F15 4.4L. The only thing I advise to every bmw owner is to change the oil using Castroil every 4-5k miles. Also don't forget to change the air filters every 10-15k miles. I got my X5 from the auction and had to replace the entire engine from the dealership. The vehicle got into an accident a month ago and after spending that much money on it got totalled.

If anyone wants to buy a beautiful 6 series, go for the 640i. The inline 6 is way more reliable than the V8 which is known for being unreliable. But if you really want to have the V8, the 650i, make sure all the history of maintenance is there and do it like the guy in the vid, take the bumper to bumper insurance. Hell, take that insurance anyway when you're spending 15000 plus on a car.

Same thing happened to me, different car brand, NOT 3rd party warranty, $21,000 in repair costs, warranty denied because the breakdown happened too soon. Same again, hired a lawyer and the dealer that sold me the warranty (not the warranty scam company itself) ended up paying me back (I had to write the $21,000 check to get my car back after 3 MONTHS in the shop). The dealer sold me a warranty for a $110,000 car without ever seeing or inspecting the car. I remember being amazed that they could/would do that, but, it ended up making sense. They just deny your claim! No risk to them really. For all the people that gave up, or couldn't afford a lawyer, I feel your pain!

It cost me 11k to rebuild! I now have an E92 M3 that now has 80k on the clock and was looking to buy the 650Grand coupe next. I will definitely do what I have done with the M3 and with the 650! Two primary questions: What was the root cause of the engine seizure? Did it indeed run out of oil and the oil light never came on? Or when you downshifted that caused some weird issue? Did BMW tell you what they found? Was oil gone, bearing failure, or what else? You mentioned lots of other people having an engine seizure issue... What year is your 650i GC? Was the blown engine the N63TU? Did they replace it with a TU2? What is the name of that 3rd party warranty company? Glad it all got sorted! That's a huge $20k bill to eat if it didn't, heh.

That is a bad engine design for reability. What often happens is the valve stem guides goes hard and worn from heat and carbon deposits,and the engine starts to consume much oil and may lock up. Or the timing guids made from plastic fails

I have an F12 and wonder how can the engine have no oil without you knowing it? The warnings built into the Vehicle Status menu would let you know that you're low if you had a leak somewhere. So what happened? How did it loose the oil? Here's a tip. Using the Sport + I paddle shifted to pass someone and snapped the differential pinion shaft so be gentle when using Sport + to launch

I just pulled the trigger on a sight unseen on a 2013 650i grand coupe online with carvana. It had one owner for 10 years and 47 service records from purchase to when the owner sold it. It only had 47k miles. I know it's a V8 and you have to be willing to swallow the cost of repairs, but I'm hoping due to the facts I mentioned, the car shouldn't have too many issues or problems. 😬 Thoughts?

Never buy BMW’s v8 engines because it’s a hot V which has the turbos located between the cylinders, and they are very unreliable after they age. Either go for the 4 cylinder or the inline 6.

Smart move calling the dealership to let them know you were seeking legal counsel on their warranty. I world have demanded an additional $5000 for the pain they put you through.

Ahh the N63/TUx. The amazing BMW Basket case motor. There is an entire lawsuit and customer care package dealing with this motor and parts of the drive train.

What is the main difference between n63 and e63/e64 ?

Did any of the indicators in the car showed that oil quantity was getting low?...or oil temperature was abnormally high....even water temperature running unusually high....any tell tale signs before the engine siezed?...thanks for your info...

I had a 3rd party warranty on my CADILLAC STS some 17 years ago blew its head at 61k. Just put of manufacturer's warranty time limit. They denied the claim. Called an attorney. They honored the claim.
