In our last video, we repaired a 1976 Electro-Harmonix Big Muff fuzz guitar pedal. CLICK HERE to see that video: • BIG MUFF WON'T PUT OUT...
During the repair, I decided to go ahead and build a clone of the pedal since I had most of the parts already on hand. That is the subject of today's video. Let's see if my Big Muff clone can match the tone of the original.

You should do a FF topology build, there's a lot you can do with them even just as far as swapping component values and transistors to get some really different sounds out of them and there's basically an infinite number of different mods you can do with them... If you want something to tinker and tune... And the circuit is mainly straightforward 🤷

I read somewhere that these common emitter stages without a bypass cap (or with emitter degeneration) work always the same irrespective of the transistor used in it. The gain and bias are set by the emitter & collector resistors and don't depend on the transistor at all. Loving your new content, Brad.

Hi Brad, transistor's bias is unlike the vacuum tube. You have to do it changing the values of R9 R14. The voltage between Emitter and Base of sillicon transistor should be 0,6-0.7 V. Don't touch the emitter resistor it isn't for bias at all, it is for negative feedback and temperature stability.

Have I dropped though a time-loop to the 1970s? There is nothing subtle about that old bees (or wasps) in a tin can fuzz sound. Would have appreciated you exploring the various settings. Volume where it just starts adding gain through to insanely OTT. Explore the sustain, how long will it feedback to the pickups etc? Brave building this live and allowing us to listen in as you try to suss it all out. Could have been a car-crash but that's entertainment. 👍😎

Thank you Brad, This video is gold to me. Just one question: ¿Did you measured the hfe on each transistor? Assuming on how your pedal sounds, it maybe is because your trannies are from mid to high hFe (500-600). If you have that info, would be very helpful to me (I am working on a Big Muff clone I have about years ago. A friend of mine who worked making DIY pedals sold it to me for a few bucks). Mine is a Rams Head violet clone, it is brighter and less mid scooped like yours, but the sound is in essence the same.

It’s in the data sheets for that transistor.
@emerson1978365
@emerson1978365 Жыл бұрын
@@TheGuitologist yeah, I know that, but personally I don't rely on these data sheets because they specifies the absolute minimum and maximum ratings, but we need to know on which point are standing on exactly beetween these points. My opinion is based on the fact that the Big Muff needs to be made with low hfe trannies, typically 180 to 240. So we need to select these components prior to installing them into the circuit, otherwise the pedal will sound too muffled and "nervous". Kit rae said that on his website. He dissected a well sounded Muff and discovered that. The best sounding pedals were made with low hfe trannies. That is interesting, don't?

In the early 1980s I began playing guitar. Scored myself an Ibanez lawsuit Les Paul and a small Barcus Barry amp. Along with this I bought the only distortion pedal I could afford. It was something all the way through the 80s into the 90s all my friends said was a shitty sounding box. But because it was absolute FUZZ I liked it, but always really just wanted the MRX distortion plus. I can’t remember what happened to that Big Muff (or the Little Big Muff?) probably traded it for beer. 80( Now it appears it’s THE coveted distortion box above all. Funny how times change.

My 3003 rev E board is all outta wack compared to any muff schematic. It's got Q4 parts by Q1 and Q2 components everywhere but near Q2.... Almost like it's a prototype for a future variant. Tone stack caps/resistors are on each side of the tone pot tho. It's even got 3 terminal feed forward capacitor spots with 2 terminal caps in them and the 3rd pad is soldered but empty. All the 470k resistors are the same stripes color wise but 2 test at 118k and the other 2 are like 89/90k. The 39k input resistor is about an inch away from Q1.... And it's got all 105° electrolytic cans except 4 are the "yellow/tan" disc caps. Total loss as to what's up. It's a NY reissue and it's got the older 3.5mm power plug and a 500k volume! The guts of the power plug are different from the one you fixed too. I'd like to mod it but I'm not sure where to start. If I pull a certain marked resistor, it don't mean it's for whatever it should be for.

This is a great video. Hope you can answer a question for me. I just built my first pedal and it is a Big Muff V3 clone. It sounds nowhere near how your sounded. My question is Are all the resistor values suppose to be the same for each pedal? I purchased my PCD from Tayda Electronics and used the Version 3 list. The material list I had for resistors did not match any list I have searched. Even the Kitrae site. I hope you can help. Thanks in advance :)

Maybe there is a misprint on their instructions? No idea, man. Sometimes you get parts that are bad out of the box too. It's rare, but does happen. You might benefit from watching my Big Muff troubleshooting videos.

@@TheGuitologist Thanks for answering back so quickly. I will definitely check out the troubleshooting vid. But to clarify. Should all the schematics and part values be the same for a Big Muff version, except for some minor mods?

Just a suggestion, I personally find it easier to prototype a clone on a breadboard before committing to solder. Imo it makes it a bit easier to swap out parts when testing... instead of relying on a flaky decade box.

Not a bad suggestion. I have a couple breadboard setups I should bust out. And ill fix my decade box.

Always loved the "muff" sound. I picked up an Ibanez Overdrive 850 on clearance from Sweetwater. Best sounding "muff" style distortion I've ever had. It's gnarly!

Yours is better but I never liked the original one I had and I wouldn't use that pedal anyway. Would be cool to see a tube reverb build.
