Today I'm walking around my crowded neighbourhood in Russia and talking about modern buildings and shops, how much it costs to live in Kudrovo and in Saint Petersburg. What are pros and cons of living in the suburbs, what I like about this place and why I want to move to somewhere else.
Also, you will hear me using different verbs of motion. This vlog is in Russian with Russian and English subtitles. Learn Russian through authentic content.

Спасибо вам на это видео из района It’s interesting to me to find out how European are those areas. Well… maybe more like East-Europe 😊 I can show you new neighborhoods that look similar striking like that - also with the same typography in the stores outdoor-titles. I think one of the most important aspects of a neighborhood is to have green areas nearby - I like what I saw in those videos - though, given the large number of flats - I think it can get crowdy in the weekend.

It's always exciting to go from our village to visit the city, but when I get there I recognize how blessed I am not to have to fight traffic, exhaust and crowds every day as the city dwellers do.. I have been to Petersburg and Moscow many times.. I love their crowds and busy streets, which is all part of the excitement when visiting those (at least for this Canadian) beautiful, exotic cities... I agree with you Dash.. less liquor stores and more schools would be a much healthier priority for your community.. Thanks for the walk around your home and for all the good work you do to help us struggling Russian language learners :)... Be blessed!

Your home area of St.Petersburg reminds me of the Camolot area of Lyubertsy (on the extreme east-side of Moscow) where there are only new apartment buildings. My friend's brother has bought an apartment there for his family. It's a pity where you live has almost no trees Dasha.... I also live in a new complex (6 years old), but there are only 7 towers, and it's situated among older buildings. So you have the benefits of modern architecture combined with older buildings and well-established infrastructure. There are lots of trees where I live, and one of the nicest parks in Moscow is 2 minutes walk away, it's a natural park that's been there for 200-300 years with a lake about 2.5km in circumference. The metro station, uniquely for Moscow (I think), has an exit in the very centre of the park and is only 6 minutes walk from the apartment. People in the area are very friendly and all the neighbours look out for each other. One disadvantage is that there are no large supermarkets nearby (just the usual produktis: Dixie, Pyatorechka and Billa) so I travel to Auchan (2 stops on the metro) for my weekly shopping. But not having a large supermarket nearby has advantages: it keeps the area peaceful and free of people - which I like. On the metro, it takes only 15-20 minutes to reach the very centre of Moscow, yet, from my apartment I can walk nearly 7km through uninterrupted park and woodland, as my local park (Shkuleva) is joined to Kuzminki park, which then joins Kuzminki Forest park..... Like where you live Dasha, lots of young people live in the complex, and lots of families with young children. But there's a good mix of different people: there's a policeman and his family living in my building, retired people, at least one doctor, and young couples who are just renting or who've bought their first apartment. One of my neighbours gets picked-up every morning by a chauffeur-driven Bentley limousine.... It's a really good social mix of people. Between the towers runs a pedestrian-only area with six children's playgrounds, exercise areas and fitness machines for adults, and table tennis tables too. In the summer, children often leave their toys, scooters and bicycles outside during the night - and nobody steals them! That's a big difference between here and living in Western Europe , the US or elsewhere....

It would have been also good to explain about the old Slavic letter «ять» when you spoke about the «УниверсамЬ» market as the use of that letter takes us back to pre soviet times and not soviet, like you mentioned. Also, when you spoke about the communalkas apartments “коммуналка» and shower cabins built into the kitchens , it would have been useful to explain that most communalkas were originally large size apartments expropriated from wealthy families by the bolsheviks after the revolution of 1917. Those families were either killed or fled Russia to escape the reds. Bolsheviks would use these apartments to house families with low or no income, often of pesant origin. The appartements were rearranged, each family would get their own room and share the kitchen with the rest of the tenants. Located in the old , what’s now refereed to as the historical centre of St.P ( equivalent of grade- listed buildings in the UK, for ex.), these apartments did not all have bathrooms at that time. Although, first bathrooms and shower rooms began appearing in wealthy St. Petersburg apartments at the end of the 19th century, they were still a novelty, so naturally , the new soviet tenants had to either squeeze in a shower/bathroom into available space - and that , usually , would be kitchen space. Most people, after the revolution , used public banias, so bathrooms in communalkas started to get built much later. 😊

thank you for your comment. You are right, I confused the information a bit. I was trying to explain that those kind of shops were very popular during the Soviet times, and now we mostly have supermarkets, but I forgot to mention that «литера Ъ (бывший ер)» was cancelled in 1918. Thank you for the info about the communalkas, I wanted to record a separate video on that topic.

Recently I watched a video of a Russian guy showing the new neighborhoods in a Siberian city, I think he mentioned they were call Novostroika, your region looks way better than what he was showing. Thanks for this extensive look around your neighborhood. I had been wondering about suburbs of St Petersburg and Moscow. You seem to have many local conveniences - but with the notable absence of schools combined with a transportation congestion at peak hours due to overbuilding the original plan for houses. It seems this neighborhood is intended for singles and newly married couples building careers. However if you start to have children, well, you are encouraged to go elsewhere. Too bad the Metro has not picked up the pace on services yet. Being stuck in traffic for double commute time is common around big cities in the US as well but no fun for anyone on the planet.

Я пересчитал рыночную цену своего нынешнего дома в США в рубли, и шесть миллионов - это неплохо! Если бы я продал здесь свой дом и переехал в Россию, я бы приехал с не менее чем 26,354,319 рублей.
