What I like about the F4 is that it is pretty much the granddaddy of all the SLR’s and DSLR’s that followed for all the camera manufacturer’s as far as shape, style and feel. It is also the last SLR from Nikon that had dials, switches and levers rather than thumb wheels and buttons to control the camera functions. Overall it was a ground breaking camera in both looks and function and a precursor of all that followed. I love mine

We were so stoked to go out and shoot with this camera. sometimes you forget that the how good the technology was back in the day and like you said this was the granddad to basically what we have now

I would say the F4 was more of a half way point between conventional separate button and dial controls with a lot of eletronics and automation, and the modal control layout for Nikon. Canon had also already introduced the T90 two years earlier with a fully modal control layout and a build in grip/motor drive that really became the archetype for cameras to follow, from film SLRs through all of the DSLR era. Looking back at Nikon, the F5 is what became the control layout and ergonmics standard they have adhered to right up to the current Z9.

I always have been amazed by my F4 every time i use it. Matrix mode works perfect, it"s really amazing what Nikon did because it was the first time they built it in a film camera. My Ultron 40mm is always mounted on, i set aperture mode, i set my Ultron on f8, set the focus ring on 4 meters mark, i push all my HP5+ to iso 1600 and i feel like shooting automatic. Everytrhing is sharp with a nice grain.

Congratulations on your lovely F4. It is a real Pro camera even today. Advice for portraits, use the Af/Exposure lock button on front to hold eye focus and don't be too anxious to shoot "wide open". Famous portrait master Jane Bown shot at f2.8 on 85mm and 50mm all her career and shot everyone including Queen Elizabeth II. Also try film rated at half ISO to give inbuilt cushion of extra exposure. Keep up the good work.

@@kevikronicles F4 was my unicorn camera. It will matrix meter with Ais lenses as well so has an added functionality over the F5. Even independent lenses like Tamron adaptall as long as the mount is Ais. Also check out Ilford HP5+ @ iso 200 for portraits and learn to home develop.

Sounds like you are, or should be, shooting B&W with the built-in spot meter pointed toward your back lit subjects. That's how I set my F4S when shooting B&W because I love high contrast. BTW, If you love your F4S, you will super love an F100. I have both and I shoot my F100 much more than my F4S.

Ive owned 3 f4's so far, one died but was able to easily buy a body only and just transfer the grip and finder to the new body. I mainly shoot portraits and fashion. Theyre amazing cameras, and criminally slept on. Still relatively cheap compared to other options out there. I reccomend getting an mb-20 grip to make it slightly less heavy! Good video and nice pics.

Thanks for the video. I own the F4 that I found in mint condition as well and now have two AF D lenses for it. The 50mm f/1.4 and the 35mm f/2. Also have several AI-S lenses that I also use with it and my FM2N. Just also picked up a F100 to try out. Need to get out and shoot more.

Nikon F line of pro cameras, starting with F2 and then F3, F4 & F5 were all outsatnding professional tools for image making. Each one a true icon and trendsetter in its own right, particluarly the F3 and the F4. The F4 was so ahead o fits time that the usual armchair pundits didn't get it first on its introdution. We know better now.

The 3 is a wonderful camera. Yes. it is big but I don't find it at all cumbersome. it really works. The metering is challenging but I take my FM3a with me and double check my exposures with the Fm3a's flawless needle meter.

The portrait of Clay is a classic example of film reticulation! Not the cameras fault, it’s usually due to drastic temperature differences between developing chemicals. That’s what all the weird squiggly grain is. In other words, I would love to get my hands on an F4!

A lot of people dislike Kentmere film as its Ilfords 'affordable' film with less silver in it hence the aggressive grain. However I like it as it has a really vintage look. Really enjoyed this video as it popped up whilst I was in the process of cleaning my own F4! :)

backlight your subject to help separate her from black ground. another thing you can do is unlike color film, you don't want flat lighting. Use the sun to give you contrast on your subject. Flat lighting is the enemy of bnw

Dude i unfortunately let my phone just play after watching repair tutorial and i had to listen to you pat your self on the back for getting correct exposure. I usually do not take the time to critique videos but someone needs to.. Your photography is barely mediocre and listening to you self grandize is painful.. keep shooting and have a good time making videos for youtube.. but for christ sake reign it back.. just because you have a forum doesnt necessarily mean anything. I would try listening more if i were you. Embrace criticism.
