I had the extreme pleasure of interviewing David Draiman of Disturbed recently ( • DISTURBED's David Drai... ), and shared with him that I'd been waiting to analyze "The Game", touted as one of their top performed songs on tour. Man, this did not disappoint. Not only did David bring his signature growls, but the arrangement and flow throughout this track had me absolutely giddy!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Disturbed performing "The Game" for the first time.

I’ve easily been to a hundred concerts. My wife and I usually average 7 a year. We’ve seen Disturbed twice and the energy both times was out of this world. The last one they opened with Are You Ready and the place exploded! It was two hours of insanity. I’ve never left a concert so exhausted. I absolutely love this band. You MUST see them live.

Still blows me away watching interviews with Draiman, including yours. The man is so soft-spoken and eloquent, and then so much of the music is loud and angry. When you hear him talk about it, you understand, but it's still such a contrast. Also, like many tracks, this one is a great example of his incredible ability to switch vocal styles on a dime. Absolute master of his craft.

Saw Disturbed live recently, went with a buddy whose favourite song happens to be 'The Game' - which they played! Not only was he ecstatic!, but his voice sounded EXACTLY like the studio version. It was incredible to witness it live! But yeah, I swear there was no difference live vs studio, except for the natural reverb of the venue (and fans singing along).

The Light by Disturbed... A song that to me really deals with having to deal with a dark moment or painful moment in your life and holding on cause sometimes if we can get through our darkest days we can find ourselves in the brightest lights. It's a song about strength, hope and inspiration and the video for this song is a perfect match to the song.. This band has so many masterpieces in my opinion and one of the best live bands I ever saw.. Truly a gifted group of individuals and the fact that they range in faith etc only makes them even more appealing cause they come at songs with so many different perspectives. Thanks for this :)

This entire album (The Sickness) is absolutely insane. It has a harmonic sparseness that's been kind of filled in with their evolution as they've gone a bit more into the nu-metal/rock end of the pool. Not that it's any less great, just there's something really special with their first release - and I think you nailed it with this video. Loved your interview with David as well. Great analysis!

Love Draiman’s voice. Such an original vocalist. So expressive and almost violent. Plus, he has great dynamics. Disturbed are a great band also. @@manjisaipoe517 are you familiar with the band Death? One of the most unique OG death metal bands, simply genius musicianship. I want to recommend to you another sister band created by Chuck Schuldiner (Death's vocalist/lead guitarist RIP) with Bruce Dickinson style vocals. The band is called Control Denied and I would put it in the Progressive Metal genre, they only made one album before Chuck passed away called "The Fragile Art Of Existence" and it's an incredible experience from start to finish. I would describe them kinda like "if Iron Maiden made extreme metal", highly recommend giving them a listen if that sounds appealing to you.

About 6 months after we were graduated from high school, I went to a Disturbed concert with a handful of friends in a relatively small venue in Indianapolis. Despite pre-gaming the concert a bit, I still remember the entire set because it was just stellar. I've been to at least 80 different concerts but the one time I saw Disturbed sticks out, even 15+ years later. Since the venue was relatively small, everyone was standing and we got to within about 15 feet of the stage. In the middle of a breakdown (while leaning over to a buddy of mine to hear him), I felt this odd little tap directly on my sternum. I looked back up to the stage and Dan (the guitarist) was pointing at me and laughing. When we locked eyes for a second, he pointed down so I looked towards my feet. He apparently flicked his guitar pick out into the crowd while I wasn't paying attention and I somehow saw it on the ground right between my shoes. I picked it up in confusion, looked back up, and Dan did a little fist pump to me with a shit eating grin on his face. My friends realized what just happened a few seconds later and kept passing it around to check it out. It was super cool, but it was so dark before we left that all I knew was that it was a black teardrop-shaped guitar pick. I didn't even think it was really one of his picks until we stepped outside. That's when I saw it was a signature version with gold Disturbed text and his signature on it. I ended up putting the pick and my ticket stub into a picture frame (after removing a picture from my ex 😆) onto a printed out band picture. I still have it to this day and, in fact, am holding it right now. It was just one of those really cool experiences from a live show that has embedded itself deep into my memory. I'll never forget that concert for that reason, and the fact that they sounded exceptional live.

13:10 I got to see them on their first tour back from their 5 year hiatus at the House of Blues in Houston, and I can tell you you definitely aren't wrong. The HoB is a small venue for a band of their caliber, and I think it was chosen for that very reason because it felt more personal with David and the band being so close to everyone across the venue, but despite the fact that it was so small and cramped it was absolutely electric in there.

Maybe it's just me, but the studio version should always be the first listen to a song IMO. Music videos are fine too (unless they cut out sections of the song which a few do). It just feels like it's usually the most well put together version and it feels like the intended experience. Live versions are for subsequent viewings. On another note, I love Disturbed, they were the second concert I ever went to, and they played with the band 10 Years, and my favorite band for a long time which split up just a few years ago, Ill Nino. Christian Machado has such a powerful and unique voice with a ton of projection (even live) and it's well worth listening to some of their old songs even if you don't like Nu Metal.

This song was basically their debut. This album was where "Disturbed" really got big and known from. Back in the early 2000s, this was basically the jam. Also, the band talked about how they came up with this song. It's about a toxic relationship where you're getting tired of all of the games and are about ready to snap. They still play this song on tours.

Kirk told me that they play this song on every tour, on every set, and it's the most requested live song they perform. Not sure if that's true, but David was pretty stoked I was going to analyze it!
@Cadinho93

@@TheCharismaticVoiceYes, they do play on every tour since this song is where it all started for them, but I don't know if it's the most requested song, but definitely for sure it's one of them. Also, David Draiman will love it because who wouldn't since you're basically the best at analyzing every song that you react to!

That's interesting because for me it was the fourth song to hit the radio. For me it was Stupify, Voices (by this point I had the CD), Down with the Sickness and then the Game, but it was so late in the radio cycle that it didn't get a lot of radio play since Believe was hitting soon after.

I’ve seen them live a few times (back in 2000, 2003 and then at some point in the early 10’s). They suffered from a lack of 2nd guitarist on any section that had a solo or needed another guitar part. Maybe they use a backing track now but I was disappointed when they were at their peak popularity.

I've heard a lot of vocal analysis channels and I love yours the most by FAR. I think what draws me in the most is how well you are able to put into words the feelings I get when I hear the music. Things I reacted to and loved, and was not always able to understand exactly what it was. Thank you for giving me the vocabulary to communicate my love for the music (in particular, David Draiman and Disturbed). Fantastic channel!

I absolutely love your videos. Especially the videos like this one. There's so much emotion in the music and the raw jubilation shown on your face and in your general reaction is so wholesome and adorable. Seeing this in response to music that shaped me as a young teenager in junior high all those years ago just puts a giant smile on my face. The intense giddiness in response to this stuff just fills me with joy. I've been a fan of your channel for about 2 years now. Videos like this will keep me coming back for as long as you're still working on this channel. Thank you. You're fucking awesome. ❤ Edit: I would LOVE to see more of this album on your channel.

I saw Disturbed in a small venue in Melbourne Australia about 20 years ago. David wasnt very animated on stage but the power he put into his vocal performance commanded attention. I think David has actually become better over the years - I did wonder how long he would last doing those crazy frys. The full interview shows how insanely disciplined the man is!!!!

There's is something you briefly touch on that David is especially good at doing, and although I was only 8 when I got this album, I was still able to experience what David brings to the table. He does make a lot of sounds that are non-lyrical. But you can still feel the raw emotion. Many times, throughout our lives we have frustrations that we have trouble putting into words, and David gives both the barbaric vocalizations combined with the intellect of putting those grunts into distinct thoughts through his lyricism. He can take a primal emotion and give it some humanity.

I was never a fan of Disturbed until I saw them at Ozzfest in 2006 or 2007. The main stage was Hatebreed, Lacuna Coil, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, System of a Down, and Ozzy. Disturbed blew them all away and I became a fan. They're hands down on of the best live bands out there, right behind any band fronted by Maynard James Keenan. I just saw them again on Jul 13 in SLC with Breaking Benjamin (who you should do some videos on) and Jinjer. They haven't lost a step.

Eddie Berg from Imminence just released a one take performance of their song desolation a few hours ago. They're a swedish metalcore band and a lot of people refer to them as violincore because Eddie also plays the violin along with the vocals. This one take has him doing both together. This song in particular and Mudshovel by Staind has some of the best expressions of anger during key moments of the songs that I know of. And one of the most unique things, and something I enjoy most about Disturbed, is his ability to make the pronunciations of his words hit with the beat of the songs so perfectly. It's so sharp and clear. And the way he has taken filler sounds that we've heard many times across all types of music na's, do's, la's, etc and created his own kind of metal version of that with his growls is also amazing.
