I have one and it is great to use, I have shooting boards for 90 and 45 degrees fixed and I also have a little longer area before the fence than you have. I like your idea for a shooting board as well.

The shooting board is a game changer! I used to use a Veritas bevel up low angle jack plane on my homemade shooting board. Then I bought that Veritas adjustable set up you have and the shooting plane and OMG! That set up made the shooting board a reliable, accurate and enjoyable everyday tool! If you can set up a shooting board to square and miter, you can suck at almost every other aspect of cutting a piece of wood and correct it all on the shooting board. Congratulations on that Stanley, it's a lovely old tool! Happy shooting!!

Great clip I shared your joy. I wanted one and when I found a way to sneak in both a 51 and 52 purchase I just used it for the feeling it gives cutting end grain. Sad really I think I need to get a life, but I still want a No 1 then I can go out again.

Ok, you've convinced me. I need one. Been using a LN 62 for my shooting, and have the same complaints you mentioned about it. It works fine, with good results, but I do find that im not overly thrilled to get my shooting done. I need a 51 that I can get excited about using! Lol. Thanks for the video. Just wanted to let you know that Cedar Chest and Cedar Chest Too in McGregor, TX has a couple of venders that sell tools. That’s where I got Stanley #4 and the wood body #33. As well as the 5 or 6 block planes. There is one there that sells all kinds of wood body moulding and rabbet planes.

Just looked up the Lie Nielson No. 51 Shooting Plane. It's only $500. Oh my. I tried looking the Stanley one up and it was $1000. Finally, something that makes a Lie Nielson product look affordable. Love the videos. Keep them coming. Thanks, Scott

I was lucky enough to acquire a 51 / 52 some time ago. Afraid it is mainly gonna be a collectors item. Will try it out at sometime. It requires a little tlc but is in great condition 😁

My dad has the plane and metal shooting board. He got it from his dad. Soon it will be mine. Dad is 93 and doing less woodworking.

The term Shooting Board and the similarly sounding Chute Board are a woodworker’s fixture. They accommodate the task of fine-tuning the end grain of a board by holding that board against a stop or fence and by providing a shelf, track, or chute (channel) to accommodate a hand plane. The noun shoot can mean chute, but typically, shoot and chute are not to be confused with each other. The verb shoot strives for, attempts to obtain, or to accomplish; in carpentry, it means to plane a board to produce a straight edge. According to Catalogues from the period, the Stanley No. 51 L-shaped Chute Plane with a skewed blade and the Stanley No. 52 Cast Iron Chute Board were sold as a set, and first offered in 1905. Starting in 1909, Stanley began selling the No. 51 by itself, and then in 1943, production ended for both the Chute Plane and the Chute Board. Another thought about the noun chute is that it is a sloping channel. A shop-made chute board with a declined ramp, the hand plane slices the end grain at a slight angle, and assures the even wear of the plane iron. This is a blurring of the two terms; both Veritas and Lie-Nielsen call their updated versions a Shooting Plane.

I did very well for myself in 2020 with Tool Drool.....I think I was able to aquire all the "necessary" vintage tools I needed for the projects I "had to get done". Now I have a new target in 2021.....I think I need this?

I’ve had the 51/52 for years (got them before there were the new alternatives), it is a wonderful tool, BUT if you are looking for a shooting plane I’d buy the Lie Nielsen or Veritas instead as they are better, thicker irons made of better steel 51/52 cost $1,500 10-15 years ago. As far as I know there isn’t an upgrade iron, so the Stanley iron is what limits it

Yes yes yes, it's rare, it's weird, it's harder to find, it is the Stanley 51, so of course its wall location would be AREA 51. Perfect designation for it. You even need to make a carved sign fo its spot. BRILLIANT! QUESTION: Do you oil or wax the aluminum runway or the bottom of the 51, or both, to minimize the wear between the hard and soft metal during use of the shooting board and plane? Thanks, James. (Even though you beat me to the Area 51 joke).

James, thanks for your videos, I learned a lot from them. I have a question: when you're shooting with a normal (no. 4, 5, etc) plane, is the angle between the sole and the side important? Because I have a good no. 5 but it's definitely not square and I was a bit worried...

I wonder if anyone ever made a home made one .. it looks like it can be easily made with a thick L section of mild steel , and a frog , iron , chip breaker and lever cap and tote from a number 6

I have a spare Record 5 1/2 which is in the process of modification. Adding thick, heavy plate steel to the side..... bolted through the side wing just ahead of the frog..... and a little further back where the casting is thick under the frogs seat, theres now threaded holes for bolting on the new base. A wooden block (bubinga) at the front attached to the screw hole for the knob and bolted to the base im adding, and another L shaped bracket (bubinga) bolted to the heel end of the plane......attach a handle (which is also bubinga hehe) to the new base and I have a shooting plane :) It wont be skewed but it should have enough mass to plough through most of the stuff I work with........I did toy with the idea of making the new steel base angled by having it thicker in the heel end so I have some of a skew, but thats proven kinda difficult to achieve haha :/ I use a Record T5 for shooting (like a 5 but a small bit shorter, has massive square side wings and a threaded hole on them to attach a handle for shooting) it doesnt tilt in use and it is very good..... but its lacking in mass with some really dense woods. I could have modified my T5 but I didnt want to change a somewhat rare plane. Your 51 is beautiful James, its obvious youre a happy man with your new plane, hope it treats you well my friend :)

Problem for all with apparent excitement, like yours. I always tell my wife when ordering something that I am buying tools, yes necessary tools, absolutely necessary and that little project she wants done is dependent on the new tool. Problem is, I often slip and say "toys" instead of "tools" and then cover my butt by saying it was a slip of the tung or by accusing her of having a hearing problem. But she always wins by pointing out my obvious excitement when the tool shows up. Have fun with your new toy, I mean tool!

Congratulations! That is a cool plane. You've got a lot of jealous viewers. I've got a question about your map. You list antique stores that sell tools. Do you just want the ones that sell a lot of tools, or do you also want info on something like an antique mall that has a two or three sellers who usually have a few antique tools? Because I know of several places in my neck of the woods that have a few cool old tools scattered here and there. I'm about 70 miles South of St. Louis. My wife and kids enjoy looking at antique malls with me. We've hit most of the nearby ones, and a few near St. Louis. My two oldest kids are now living on campus at College of the Ozarks (Hard Work U). It's four hours away, and there are antique malls and antique stores everywhere between home and the campus. I'm usually in too big a hurry to stop, and it hurts my soul wondering what antique woodworking treasures I just drove past.

With my delving into hand planes, I have wondered about using a shooting board and plane to edge join boards for a glue up. A shooting board track would need to be 2 to 8 feet or more long.... Possible I guess. Has anyone done that yet????

Man I so need to build me a hybrid chuting plane because I've seen these on UK eBay a few months ago that wasn't nearly as clean as yours for about £500 so roughly $650 and my money's not that long so I've been thinking building a hybrid from a junky old Stanley frog and some good wood
