Just an FYI guys, the quoted $4000 isnt just the rebuild cost only. Thats the labor to remove all 11 cylinders, send them off for rebuild, and reinstall when done. Also fluids, calibration, and sales tax. Some people are thinking I quoted $4000 for the rebuilds only. It is not. It is the full start to finish cost. Re-watch the video.
@JaredJanhsen

That's less than $400 a cylinder. I don't find that unreasonable for removal, refurbish, and reinstallation. My dad had a fleet of forklifts to manage before he retired. He had many cylinders rebuilt and they were $250-$300 and that was with him dropping them off after he took them off the machine.

As soon as you mentioned $4,000 is sitting over on the table, my immediate thought was, "must be the top hydraulics." And yeah, $4,000 all in to do the eleven cylinders really isn't unreasonable. If you're going to own cars like this, you have to be prepared. Hopefully now the owner can look forward to 20 more years of top-down summers.

Why's this even an issue? To begin with, even charity shops have bills to pay and can't stay open otherwise. Moreover, if both sides understand what's involved (as I'm sure they do here), what entitles anyone else to moan about it? Although I know nothing about cars, $4k seems pretty low for the skills, knowledge and manual labour involved in what I've just seen with my own eyes.

This is why I love OBD1 rides. A majority of the time most of the bolts are easy to reach. You may need to remove 3 or 4 things and make a specialty tool with some high end cars. But even they are not crazy complicated. Also a fan of running manual tops or converting hydraulic to electric tops. Lots of limit switches and a bit of screwing around with timing. But never have a issue where your covered in fluid.

Two things: 1 -- thanks for the 100PercentJake channel shoutout. He's my favorite automotive KZfaqr because he best reflects my experience as a DIYer, and in my opinion he should have multiples more subscribers than he does. Your mention will really help. Lately, Tyler G has been a huge part of the channel. 2. Let Grimes be sardonic, deadpan and sarcastic on camera, which is where he really shines. I know that kind of fits the vibe of Jake's channel better than yours, but having him heard as a voiceover while pointing out what's going on and making a couple of jokes is really where he shines

Every thing you talk about is SPOT ON! Just had ALL 12-13 cylinders pulled rebuilt ..3.9K OUCH! Get it home and the BOW micro switch goes out and top would not work.
