Was I wrong about the Scarp 1 regarding my previous thoughts? In this video I give a detailed review of the Tarp Tent Scarp 1 Ultra TNT making some comparisons to the Hilleberg Akto and Nortent Vern 1. Do I think it's the BEST 1 person 4 season tent that I have ever tested? What tent am I taking on all my latest camps? With an incredible strength to weight to space ratio its hard to beat the Scarp 1 Ultra for one person 4 season wild camping. Never mind its insane versatility with crossing pole options and the choice of carbon or aluminium poles... I personally just love the look of it too if that counts for anything?
Just to add the link below so you can see there is no difference pack in size between the Ultra and the Silnylon Scarp 1.

By the way I got a custom made footprint from Lucy.. Very impressed Below is the link..

And all this with a new way of reviewing tents on this channel.. Best wishes Tom

By far the best tent reviews on KZfaq without a doubt. I contacted TT regarding the magnetic tiebacks and they promptly posted me some standard toggle tiebacks which use the same green sticky backs as the rest of the green reinforced areas, so I just carefully cut out the magnets and applied the new tiebacks, which work perfectly. All free of charge! Actually I was so impressed with the new Ultra that I sold my Jannu and bought the much cheaper Kuiu Storm Star. I'll use the TT in all but the longest nights when I'll switch to the Kuiu (which is absolutely awesome). I recently purchased the Nitecore NU43 (I think that's it anyway!), and again another new product that is absolutely hitting the nail on its head. I forgot to say, it's possible to get the older inners which use 30d floors, I've had mine now for 4 years (transferred from my old Scarp to the new Ultra), and I've no holes, and I have my dog in the tent. Cheers and happy camping!!!

Hey Ash, thank you for this detailed comment and sharing your experience. I will give Tarp Tent a shout regarding the toggles... It's great to hear that you love the ULTRA and I too am probably going to sell my Jannu.. The Nitecore that I currently own is the NU25UL But the one Nitecore sent me is the new HC65UHE.. Best wishes and I really appreciate the positive feedback.. Tom

Hi Tom. A very detailed and fair review on the pro and cons of this tent. Having seen this tent in action a few times I think you have summed up well its benefits in terms of its structural strength, space and low weight, and it’s drawbacks of larger pack size and the fiddly pole cups. I don’t see the 20d floor as a drawback as this tent functions better with a footprint anyway imo, so even with a heavier floor I would use a footprint for practicality. The main thing is you clearly really enjoy using it and it suits your particular needs very well.

Hey Gary great to hear your thoughts on this one... Maybe some day I will talk you into one ha ha.. definitely a few drawbacks which I can easily live with due to that strength to space to weight ratio and pole configuration options... Might get the carbon cross over poles as that would save me nearly 200g and would add enough extra strength... best wishes and looking forward to our next camp...

Brilliant and thorough review as expected Tom. I really rate your evaluation of the scarp ultra TNT and appreciate you’ve used it for a number of times before you made your conclusions on it. You know my take on this tent. It’s really impressed me so far and I have just used it in high winds on place fell this week. It didn’t budge at all. So versatile, strong and waterproof all for an overall lightweight shelter that is very suitable for a UK four season tent. Excellent work Tom, been waiting on this review for a while and it didn’t disappoint. Atb Wild in nature.

Fantastic review and a tent that I think would be great to have during a lightweight summer camp with a long trek. One of my jackets from Loro Piana is made from a material that NASA uses for its parachutes. It's expensive but very strong and would be nice for a manufacturer to utilise it for a tent.

Thanks Tom for another fantastic review - and for doing a tent I actually own (instead of lusting after like the Samaya) I have loved using the silnylon Scarp for about 4 years in every condition - and my new Ultra version has just been tested in last 24 hours of snow and high winds in Brecons 👍 I think the new material is awesome - especially with regards to absorbing water - but I agree with your other comments about its practical space, and how brilliant Henry Shires is (but it does have a silly magnet) Keep making the reviews - I love them 🎉

Hi Tom, I'm not someone who can afford tents like this, both from a £ and a use perspective, but I really enjoy your in depth reviews. As an NI viewer your default Luke's Mountain in the Mourne Mountains as a test bed, for those who know is going to test any tent for wind, rain or snow. I really like your forensic breakdown of tent attributes to provide like for like comparisons. It might even become the adopted ''Heaney Scale' for tent comparison. Possibly, probably the best review channel for camping equipment on KZfaq. No hype just the facts; pros and cons fully explained. 👍

I only found your channel by accident as I saw a tent company here in NZ doing a successful Kickstarter on a tent made by this product and did a KZfaqr search for anyone else using it. The NZ company claims a 140,000 mm waterproof rating, which is very impressive if true! Thanks for explaining this fabric in detail..

Yes thank you for the comment and information.. Challenge Outdoor also lists the 140000mm waterproof rating. It's strange that it's so high and fabric doesn't need anything close to that to be effective regarding waterproofness . I like the fabric and construction so I hope it works long term... What's the name of the NZ company so I can look them up? Many thanks and best wishes Tom

@TOMHEANEY100 It's called MOA by Kiwi Ultralight. They say the same as what you say, unlike ripstop nylon, which is really annoying in the rain as the fly can sag and touch the inner tent. This Ultra TNT will not sag and could possibly mean almost nothing to dry at the end of the hike.

Hi Tom. Interesting review. I've got the silnylon version and agree with you about the little pockets that the main pole goes into. They can be fiddly to get the pole into, especially whilst wearing gloves and I've had a pole pop out again a couple of times. I'd prefer the usual metal grommets (I think very early versions of the Scarp had these, not sure why they changed, I don't see it as an improvement) ATB.

Hi Dave, thank you for commenting here especially as you have direct experience of the Scarp1.. Yes the metal eyelets were on the original version so also not sure why that was changed. Fantastic. If I hadn't bought the silnylon version two years ago... Still, I really rate my Scarp, and it'll be interesting to watch how Ultra performs long-term in the hands of other users! The Scarp's design makes it in my opinion one of the top choices for all-year UK backpacking. I watched it all Tom, I got THAT FAR! In fact I feel quite fresh. Interesting and educational perspective on the material strength, never thought of the silnylon stretch and strength aspect. I like the scoring system, but are you sure you dont have a bit of new tent love! Dont get me wrong, I have enjoyed my Scarp 1, but feel a little let down that they have not taken the opportunity of design evolution to address some of the shortcomings. But thats just my opinion, for instance I would have loved to seen closable mesh on the inner, the door vent neing bigger and the pole sleeve less tight, but thats just my opinion. Great review, well presented and some good 'new' information. ATB Fell Man

New tent love has worn off as I have camped 10 times in this tent and waited to review it.... the short comings for you and me may differ as I have so far found no issue with the mesh not being able to be covered... Hi Tom, how nice to have you back with a new review!! Tent consultancy at the finest :D. Your passion always let us see how much you love this. And it's very much transmitted through the screen. I'm kinda worried though that different tents are gonna start to pile up in the higher positions. Aren't you being too generous? I mean, once you gave a 15 out of 15 youre basically saying that no other tent will be better in this particular aspect. I used to do some FMEA analyisis at work and build rankings is a big part of that process. A tip would be find in each aspect the best possible performance in a tent regardless everything else (Find the strongest regardless the weight. The lightest regardless the strength, etc. Always within the same category of course, apples to apples) and compare the others in terms of how close they get to that "benchmark" if you will. And that point does not necesarely has to be the higest mark, you could asume that there is still room for improvements. I don't know.. just a thought. I'm sure you though it through more than I did anyways..
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 6 ай бұрын
Hey Marco, awesome to hear your thoughts... Very interesting points and its the first time I have done this but I have already run my other tents through the system and balanced it.. I am not about to NOT award full marks if I feel that the tent is the best or equal in the category. For example 10 out of 10 for ventilation as I feel its best in the 4 season class and certainly from what I have tested.. Adaptability 15 out or 15 as what other tent gives you so many options... carbon or aluminium poles, mesh or solid inners, single pole or crossing pole configuration, two adjustable vestibules etc etc.. So I am saying no other tent will better it in the particular class... BUT this is open to challenge here in the comments and I can advise viewers to watch my latest videos to get any updates. The particular class is hard to define and I will keep it broad to include any tent that I feel can be used by one person for UK 4 season use, but not trekking pole tents.. So for strength I would award the Hilleberg Jannu and Nammatj 15 out or 15... In reality how can anyone prove that any tent in this class will be stronger as I dont see any other KZfaqrs providing video evidence of this... Hey I hope this answers your comment which I have read now 3 or 4 time to try best to understand it.. I will read it again soon and update here if I have a change of heart... best wishes Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 My English is not helping here.. LOL Nevertheless I'm sure you got my point and you did addressed it. Regarding the tent itlsef I wouldn't dare to question your criteria at any point.. If it seems that way please sorry. When i said generous i tried to refer only to the point of "no other tent having the chance to be better in a certain aspect once anyone reach the top score". I was not implying anything about the tent. That being said, it is a bold statement to score anything at the highest and I like boldness in people that know their stuff. Hi Tom. A very thorough review. Enjoyed this video. For me, in ROI, it'd have to be a green or sand colour fly, that colour screamed "Get off my land"!! Also, I'm on the fence that it will handle the achilles heel of its original, I.e. , the arch pole sleeve delicacy/"faffiness" any better... Be interested to see how it's holding up after 40+ camps. And no guy lines included!!!! BTW, did you buy it via a British or European dealer or direct from Tarptent ( customs!!!)? You and Andrew Park should definitely do a collaboration video, you are both Aces when it comes to tents! Keep up the good content. Regards, Wadirunner.

Hi thank you for sharing your thoughts... The Scarp 1 Ultra has some annoyances such as the tight pole sleeve and small arch pole holders but these dont affect its overall function for me. Weight is so important for me personally and the strength to weight to space ratio is fantastic and that allows me to overlook the other shortcomings. I personally dont enjoy camping in locations where I maybe shouldn't be so stealth is not an issue for me.. But then I have easy access to free camping land.... If there are any durability issues down the line then I also understand that it is a very lightweight product and dont expect it to be as durable as a Hilleberg red or black label tent... The Guyline issue is also easily sorted and well known BUT I understand many feel it should be included and I probably agree but another small con IMO that is outweighed bay the great basic features that this shelter provides. Andrew Park has wound me up on a few occasions ha ha so no collaborations I am afraid.... Hey Wadirunner best wishes and thank you for the great comment.... Tom

An excellent overview and very informative as always. A couple of questions if I may. Is there a noticeable difference other than perhaps weight between the two pole types on offer with this tent? And as someone new to tents in general, the fly fabric looks and sounds a little delicate. Is that the case or is it as strong as other materials?
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 4 ай бұрын
The fly is very strong as it's made from materials similar to those used in the sailing industry... It's maybe not for someone who has not too much experience with tents as it is strong for what it's designed for but maybe easy to accidentally damage.. As for the poles the carbon ones are nearly 100g lighter especially on the longer crossing poles.. Best wishes Tom

Not a straight forward answer as all tents have pros and cons.. The Soulo is the safe bet due to it's long term proven record regarding strength and durability... The Scarp here offers much more space, two vestibules, different configuration options and much lighter.. It won't be as durable and not proven yet long term.. While you want your tent to perform on the trip you will use it lots after the trip as well and the Scarp is very adaptable for a wide range of conditions. I have owned two Soulos and this Scarp and It would be the Scarp for me with an additional foot print for the potential rough ground in Iceland.. I hope that helps.. best wishes Tom

Just stumbled across your channel, absolutely love the detailed scoring system for evaluations. What are your thoughts on the carbon fiber poles VS aluminum poles of e.g. the ordinary Scarp 1 in high winds? Winds sure seems to be your expertise! Any worries with carbon fiber? I’m camping in the highlands in Scandinavia so wind is always a worry, and I’m looking to upgrade from my Terra Nova Laser Competition 2, potentially to a scarp 1. I’m considering choosing aluminum for the main pole but going for carbon fiber in the crossing poles.

Hey thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.. I haven't really tested the carbon poles yet... BUT have now got a second Scarp ( Sil Nylon) and I ordered a complete carbon pole set.. As far as I know you can only get the Syclone poles now for the arch pole.. I actually really like the carbon poles as you can definitely feel the weight difference.. The arch pole is awesome but the crossing poles are 7mm and feel a bit fragile.. They work well but so far I haven't really tested them.. I originally wanted the aluminium arch pole and when I got the tent I thought there was a mistake but on looks at the website it looks like all arch poles are carbon.. Definitely not disappointed now that I have used it a few times.. It's actually pretty right when set up in the tent.. I hope that helps.. best wishes Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 that's good. Hopefully won't be an issue. I'm of the mind that tents should have some "give" somewhere. I take the example of my mld trailstar. You could theoretically have a tripod in the middle, which wouldn't move, but then the top of the fly would be moving and constantly rubbing on the top of the pole, eventually it would rub a hole into it. With just a single slightly flexible pole, this doesn't happen, and you just need to deal with some fly deformation. I think when tents are too rigid this creates stress in places you don't want. Stable? Sure. But longevity I don't know. Most HB tents are known for being a bit flappy, but the beauty of silnylon is that it spreads the load over a huge area, taking stress off potential weak points. I'm all for development and new ideas, but I think it'll be a while before silnylon truly becomes a thing of the past.

Hi Alex, thats a little tricky as I haven't tested the 2.0 in high winds. I have however tested the Assaut 2 as I am sure you are aware and its a very similar tent.. I would therefore speculate that the 2.0 would have a strength score of 12 or 13... The Scarp can have 3 poles supporting its structure of a similar size, and the rods at the ends whereas the Samaya has only two poles supporting it but also guy lines for the poles which make a big difference. The scarp will be stronger from the side due to the arch pole and very effective guying. So to picking exact number I would say 12, but that of course would be open to much debate... best wishes Tom

There will be many opinions on this topic and stories of owners claiming to have had their tents out in mad winds and the tent holding up no problem. Very few of them supported by proper video evidence. I have owned both RL and BL Soulos and wind tested the RL to 60MPH at the tent... At 60mph the RL was definitely under pressure. I have only wind tested the scarp to 40mph but it did exceptionally well with much more to go IMO, but exactly how much I cannot say. The Vern 1 is very new and not proven yet with no evidence of performance in winds much over 30mph. IMO which I will admit is speculation too, the Scarp 1 Ultra would be as strong as a RL Soulo. The fabric is super strong and the combination of 5 supporting rods at either ends with the additional crossing poles makes it very wind and snow load resistant... I hope that this helps... best wishes Tom

The Scarp fabric ripped to shreds within 30 minutes of being setup due to a big gust, MCM's Soulo, suffered a bent side pole. The Soulo could have easily avoided damage by having the side pole double pole'ed. The scarp ripped where the crossing poles attach to the fabric

Tony Noble, the friend of MCM Outdoors, who was camping in the Scarp 1 was not using the ultra (ultra TNT fabric) but rather the original sil-nylon version. In addition to this, he later did a post-camp analysis of the video he had recorded and concluded that he had in fact pitched it incorrectly which most probably resulted in the fabric tear. On the corners there are some velcro straps that you are supposed to attach to the crossing poles, and he had neglected to do so. Not doing that and putting the tent in high winds will inevitably put a lot of stress on the fabric, so the failure would most likely not have happened had he done so.

I sold mine. Not a good tent. Certainly not when compared to the original Silnylon Scarp1. The Ultra material is a condensation nightmare. Sounds like a crisp packet. The magnets are a waste of time. And with the one I had, if you tried to lift the sides for more ventilation the centre pole pulled out of the fabric pole cup due to being so rigid. Add to that the fact it leaked like a sieve at the zips. Really couldn't have been less impressed in this material if I tried hard. Its abrasion/puncture resistance is also very poor. Its essentially a plastic sheet with reinforcement.

Thank you for sharing your opinion to this audience. I appreciate it.. In life there is always good and bad and a difference of opinion.. For example I recently stayed in a Hotel which was incredible but when you read the reviews some reviewers thought it was poor.... When you look at other tents getting great reviews someone always gives them a bad one based mostly on differences of opinion. The fly material on this Ultra has a very high hydrostatic head rating and extremely waterproof. All I can say is that I have had no condensation ever the 10 camps in varied conditions including heavy rain and no wind. The tent is also extremely well ventilated to help avoid condensation. The sound to me (my opinion only) is fine as any tent is noisy in high winds. I mentioned the magnet strength and agree but this is a well known and not a major functional issue to ME.... Many Hilleberg tents have long doors with only one tie back and these too come loose although not just as easy as the Scarp here... My opinion with the fabric pole holder cup is definitely the same as you but for me more of an annoyance than a big functional issue. Few tents actually have waterproof zips in the first place so rain will always come through them.. If you pull the end tie outs very very tight it will pull the zip covers apart slightly and this could certainly cause leaks. So far mine hasn't leaked and I have been out in serious rain , in fact a rain weather warning and massive flooding here in the UK.. While others, and Tarp Tent themselves are mentioning abrasion and puncture resistance being less than other fabrics.. abrasion and puncture resistance are not characteristics of a tent fly as it shouldn't be exposed to rubbing or sharp objects.. I took my time doing this review and didn't just rush it after a couple of camps.. and over the years I have had so many tents which all have had their faults and this has been very frustrating. This tent however for me and comparing it to the many tents I have used and actually tested and reviewed fits all the major functions that I require already mentioned in the video. Once again I appreciate you sharing your experience and thoughts of the Scarp 1 Ultra.. best wishes Tom
@HairyHiker2022

I appreciate your views and you're right, it's all about opinions. I also used it in various conditions and found the condensation to be horrendous. Never had a tent as bad. The pole end cup issue is also a functional one. Loosening the tie down to secure the pole in order to raise the side door for additional ventilation and having the pole slip out of the cup therein causing collapse of the tent is a huge functional issue. I agree fly sheets are not designed to be highly resistant to abrasion or puncturing but simply put. Ultra sail cloth is significantly less resistant than silnylon or silpoly. I actually had to return my first Scarp1 Ultra as it had puncture holes in the fly upon arrival. Its literally a strengthened plastic bag. I've had a number of Tarptents over the years and they've all been great tents. The Scarp1 design is I think outstanding. But in this material, its a very very poor tent indeed.

Sorry about the problems Scott. As you know we offered to address the leaking--we missed sealing one of the clips along the fly zipper--but I totally understand you just wanted to move on. Saying that it "leaked like a sieve at the zips" is way overstating the actual documented single leak point. I do want to point you that condensation has absolutely nothing to do with UltraTNT compared to silnylon or any other coated/laminate fabric. Condensation is just the nature of atmospheric physics and is a function of temperature and humidity. It happens in ALL tents in the right/wrong conditions.

Actually you didnt refund. I sold the tent as it was too much hassle to try and claim back the customs duty and vat had I returned the tent to you. The condensation was absolutely due to the fabric as I have camped many times in similar conditions in the silnylon scarp1 and have never experienced anything even remotely close to that level of condensation. As for the leak at the zip. It was really bad. Ok maybe sieve is excessive but constantly dripping in what was not especially heavy rain and soaking my gear is significant. Im not hating on Tarptent by saying these things. Im just speaking as to my own experience. My 3 previous Tarptents (scarp1, stratospire 2 and Double Rainbow dw) have all been excellent tents in fact and performed exceptionally well. But the Ultra version of the scarp1 (I cannot speak for the other models in ultra) is not good. Far from it in fact. @henryshires9238
