George Daniels also used one to cut out his watch parts. The reason for the pivoting arm is to avoid independently raising the cutter when cutting different pockets. For example, if you are cutting out the spokes for a watch gear, if you raise the stylus but fail to raise the cutter you will mill off the spoke arm and destroy the part. Most mechanical engraving machines have a mechanism on the cutter head to raise and lower it independent of the stylus. In that case lifting the stylus would not also raise the cutter. SEAN

Ok,that's a 3d pantograph ( as is mine ) this is for tracing a three dimensional image such as a coin or medal ,as you guessed the spindle should be vertical for your cuts ,if your tracing a two dimensional pattern you'd normally lock the vertical pivoting of the arms ,you should find a way to do this near the pivot point ,mine has a cylinder of a set height that bolts the three dimensional motion down. Hope this helps..... Very useful machines 🙂

Dean DK, I just took a look at your video #5. The part you are sawing and filing is a perfect candidate for your engraving machine. The pattern that the stylus follows would have to be made oversize. Typically mechanical engraving machines offer up to a 7 to 1 reduction. This means that your pattern can be made up to 7 times larger than the final part. The pattern can be made out of any material (such as plastic) that will not deform under pressure from the stylus. The oversize pattern can be brought to its final shape using the same techniques used in your video #5. The beauty of the engraving machine is you will get an error reduction proportional to the size difference of the pattern and the final finished part. Rough cutting the final part before putting it into the engraving machine will greatly reduce the load put on the cutter bit. SEAN

Beautiful pantograph ... i own a gravograph one, had it for many many years ... its a awsome piece of equipment :) .. watching you cool video i noticed your microscope as well, i would pitch the idea to cover the head with a plastic cover ... just to minimize the dust on that one :)

its made for engraving characters in plates and so on. and it need a lot of TLC before you can make artwork with it. the spindle sounds as an WW1 airplane engine with a bad cold. :)

I tried to build a pantograph many years ago but it wasn't very accurate so I canned it....very useful for watchmaking, I reckon. Another good video, Dean. Nice one, mate. A pantograph is on my list for sure....

I don't think that movement in the z axis is for scale movement in the axis only for actual tool engagement on a surface (the manual quills seem to have you applying manual pressure there for engagement which must take some practice). I knew GD had one but didn't think much of it until your trip but now I am totally after one of these as I really can't think of a better way for cutting small irregular shapes and the way that the error scales down as well is a huge benefit as opposed to free handing it and filing. Well done, I look forward to seeing what uses you come up with for it and will be stealing your ideas for sure =).

A clean bench is a happy bench. My guess your head height is critical to your cutting tool being square when lowering the head into the cutting position. Just a guess though.....
