Honoring legacies is something that the Ultraman franchise always does, it's just more apparent in the the New Gen and Reiwa era for marketing reasons but I don't mind that. In the Showa era, the Ultras from series before the one that was airing gets disrespected a lot. Interesting choice for another first introduction to Ultraman! This movie and the show Ultraman Nexus in general generally depicts a spiritually accurate adult drama period of the Ultraman brand at the time. The whole movie feels like an expanded ordinary Ultraman episode for the 2000s modern day adults, while to me the show manages to adapt the dramatic intrigue of modern tokusatsu at the time while STILL BEING ULTRAMAN. Also your suggestion of Maki figuring out how to fly as Ultraman and fulfilling his dream that way would’ve definitely added a decent amount of Ultraman’s mandated hopes and dreams trope. I can see that being in a real Ultraman episode ending where the characters say their dream came true through Ultraman.

The Ultra N Project is one of the best project that Tsuburaya ever made, if you don't know, Ultra N Project is a name that made by Tsuburaya production about 3 Ultraman that relate to one another but it's actually about and Ultraman that have a 3 form, which is Ultraman The Next, Ultraman Nexus, and finally and the true form of Ultraman The Next and Nexus is Ultraman Noa. Yes, you know why the project is call The Ultra N Project, because the 3 Ultraman have a letter N on their name. Back then, The first name for Ultra N Project is The yellow eye Project because the 3 Ultraman have some similar things, from their eye, their color, their color timer(which is call the energy core for The Next, Nexus and Noa), and some of their abilities, like stratous edge, a slash that The Next use from his arm to slash, shot and attack The One, yea the little blade that The Next have on his arm, this ability have been upgrade after The Next hibernate for 5 years after he meet Sunichi Maki, The Next evolved to Ultraman Nexus to Ultraman Nexus Anphas, and the stratous edge turn into Nexus arm, the red accent with a little blade on Nexus both arm. One more thing, Ultraman The Next is one of the shortest Ultraman from all Ultraman including Nexus and Noa, The Next tall is 10 m for his Anphas form, for his Junis form is 40 m tall, compare to Nexus and Noa, Nexus tall is 49 m and this high is the same for all Nexus form, for Noa his high is 0-50 m. Also the movie being a bridging to Nexus is ehhhh, it is and it is not. Mainly the The Next content is present later on in the show. BUT, the show very much acts like it is its own thing that takes place in the same universe. Ultraman Nexus very much takes a grounded approach, but also a mysterious approach due to it not trying to be a high budget action thriller movie. Ultraman Nexus you will really appreciate from its adaptation of Ultraman. It feels like a heisei tokusatsu cleverly using the classic and modern aspects of Ultraman

I don't know if you have any interest in things that are inspired by Ultraman or video games, but I would recommend for you a 2010s PS3 RPG series called White Knight Chronicles. Both the heroes and villains are able to turn into armor clad giants in order to fight giant monsters and each other and the story is one of my all time favourite video game stories. And the sequel directly connects the first game instead of them being standalone games as well.
