Great video i do the same with my brand new common boa he honestly sometimes is a little suprised when im going to pick him up but once hes out the cage the snake is fine completely so I just need to keep trying and finding better ways to hold him I’ll figure it out as I go

Yea, it's like walking up a groggy person and they get surprised. Just a good thing to do when you reach into their enclosure and they are hidden or balled up in the corner to use something other than your hand at first to touch them. If I see a twitchy head or any nervous movement, I'm not just grabbing them, I just don't like being bit even if a small snake. Just very startling and I always jerk back. Manny is now twice that size. He's never bitten me, hissed at me or struck at me and I got him as a month old baby.

I never really seem much of any defensive behavior/worry from my snkes/lizards from me reaching down to pick them up. Likely more of an issue with a brand new snake, an animal that's been mistreated/lack of trust, not used to people/being handled, or a wild caught reptile. My 4 (2 boas raised from little babbies and my 2 Tegus bought as babies. They very rarely got or get upset/defensive at something I do. As long as I move with normal speed and they have time to see or smell me, then everything is good. I would say that once you establish an ongoing relationship with them and that level of trust is developed, then they know they feel more relaxed and safe. I've been very fortunate with these 4 reptiles plus I've put in a lot of time and effort to build good reports. I will say that if I put either of my snakes on the floor in the center of an open room and I walked up to them randomly, then they would most likely get upset, but I had a Burmese Phython that got 7-8 feet and this wouldn't bother him.) Obviously not all snakes the same.

Keeping snakes in glass aquariums is poor practice. Glass doesn’t retain heat. The all round visibility doesn’t help the snake feel secure. In the UK we use purpose built wooden or pvc vivariums.

They are not optimum epically in the winter or in a cool room. In the warmer months I have nothing against them or if you can dedicate a room to be in the low 80 degrees.. As far as reflections in the glass, easy to fix that with simple solutions. I got my glass reptile terrariums with metal screen tops for incredible deals so I deal with their shortcomings. As for humidity, I don't have a problem with humidity levels because Iconstantly seeing to them, attending to their needs which keeps their purpose made substrate moist and soft.

Also, to note when you say a glass aquarium, what I'm using is not a aquarium "aqua" because aquariums are purposely built for holding a percentage of water and the forces the water inside exerts on the glass sides and bottom. The cages I use are reptile or other small animal specific terrariums or cages. When you hint at that your cage methods are better or superior "purpose built" snake cages because you use the term vivarium (wood or PVC), a terrarium and vivarium are/can be interchangeable. You could do some more home work and education. You don't live in the U.S. so you may not be aware but three of the bigger, main stream reptile and amphibian based care and housing product supplier companies base their habitats for snakes, turtles, and lizards off 5 sided glass pieces. Those companies are Zilla, Exo-Terra, and Zoo Med, Repti-Zoo and more. They don't make and offer their habitats to be bad for people's pets. Making a statement that keeping a snake in a glass enclosure is wrong or "poor practice" or is an improper choice is a snap judgement based on purely what you think. The difference between what I have and you claim to use can vary on ventilation methods (side vs. top vs. some with front and top). Yes, glass and some see though plexiglass can have reflective surfaces and not do as well with retain the heat that you put into them, but that's not always a negative or a deal breaker. Depends on many variables and different situations. The large, pro exotic "expensive" reptile and amphibian stores here, Plano Reptarium and the Richardson Serpentarium, exclusively use all sided glass terrariums with ventilated screen tops for heat, UVA and UVB light. Also, the 3 million subscriber KZfaq/pet store and reptile zoo "Snake Discovery", they house hundreds for their reptiles (snakes and lizards) in full glass animal terrariums and don't consider the glass reflections and "doesn't retain heat" to be your "poor practice" method. Their number one priority is their animal care and husbandry and I've traveled almost 1000 miles to their zoo/store/adoption center: snakediscovery.com/store/ www.evolutionreptiles.co.uk/blog/difference-between-a-vivarium-and-a-terrarium/

And you have no videos of keeping your snakes. I have a mixture of pvc and aquariums. As long as the enclosure is the proper size for the animal that is all that matters

Hi Mr getting thru life. I’m about to get my own Nicaraguan boa tomorrow! What would you recommend for lighting ? And also heat
@GettingthruLife
@GettingthruLife Жыл бұрын
Cool, congrats on new pet. They don't need any expensive lighting like other reptiles that need somewhat expensive UVB spectrum bulbs and fixtures. If going to be using a dedicated reptile front door enclosure or a 30- 40-50 gallon glass terrarium with a screen top then look at buying a ceramic light socket with the bigger aluminum reflector dome. 75 watt incandescent bulb of your choice for daytime heat. Heat range for the snakes day 82-88 degrees. 77ish under their hide/ dark place for them to be out if sight/hide. Night temps 75-80 degrees. Can by a red infrared 75 watt bulb for night cage warmth or a ceramic heat emitter. Put these lights on a "zoo med" day/night timer. Can set timer to alternate heat sources. A good idea to buy two $10 reptile temp/humidity Guage to stick on each end of you enclosure. Place lights one side of cage. Allows snake to get away from heat to self regulate their body temp. Need to buy: 1.Cage 2. Ceramic daytime light fixtures 3. Ceramic night light fixtures or ceramic reptile radiant heat emitter. 4. A hide box 5. A water dish or source your own 5. Newspaper - decorative reptile substrate - own sourced dirt/peatmoss no chemical additives 6. 2 reptile, budget friendly temp/humidity guages 7. Timers to set light to come on/off. Don't run day bulb 24hr. Duplicate night/day cycle per the actual seasons.

The above are just examples: the electronic thermostat and reptile heat pad is a good winter option (set to 85-86 degrees. The option that replaces the blue/black light heat bulb and socket. A daylight bulb and fixture is still a good idea even though my snake never comes out on his own during the day. Also could use something like this to light snakes cage for the day (bulb Last longer): www.amazon.com/MYPLUS-Dimmable-Aluminum-Workbench-Desk%EF%BC%88Black%EF%BC%89/dp/B07JQCVX49/ref=asc_df_B07JQCVX49/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309849973082&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9390101070364810569&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9026812&hvtargid=pla-760549520152&th=1 (warm white 3000K option bulb)

@@GettingthruLife how do you keep the humidity up so well? I got a big water bowl in there, spray about every 15 minutes it seems like to keep it around 50%
@GettingthruLife
@GettingthruLife Жыл бұрын
My humidity fluctuates. That's OK. Don't overdo the moisture as then can get mildew/mold. Most the time 40-55% humidity. Substrate type holding moisture pays a big part. Some it better acting like a sponge, example coconut husk chips. Also depending on you cage with screened in portions, you can cover up some to reduce heat and moisture from escaping. Through trial and error you can fine tune over time. Between 40 and 70% humidity is good. Higher towards 70 after you mist but goes down as dries up. Just mist substrate/interior once mid morning and then let be. Can do again in afternoon if cage seems 20%30% dry.. This snake is not a super high humidity snake like a Rainbow Boa at 70-80% humid.

I got this guy when he was 12-13" long in June 17th, 2021. He's approx 3 feet 1 inch now. The glass terrarium is 28" x 18" x 17". I am planning/contemplating on stepping him up to a large summer cage, a big 8" x 4.5" x 3.5" I built for my 2 Tegus as seen in videos of mine. I just need to build a top for it that opens up. In the winter he will likely go back into a smaller cage where I can control temp at a less expense plus at my winter 80-83 degree temp he doesn't move around all that much. Come out at night and sits in his favorite spot thinking he might be able to grab a mouse that wonders by.

My Nic boa has turned into a extra large for a dwarf species, friendly noodle. He has really turned into a docile and predictable snake. I have 99% anticipation he won't strike at me when I reach my hands into get him. He is snakes so I give one percent of uncertainty because snake. I feel he really knows me, my smell and he knows I'm his caretaker (food and take out play) so as long as I don't confuse him that I smell like/look like his food, I'm golden. Same with my hypo boa. Raised them both from a few month old babies. I'd suggest the goal is to make them feel super comfortable with what they feel is their safe space and when they don't feel threatened snakes tend to calm down. Also handle often and let them get super used to your scent. I put mine under my shirt since babies while I lay in bed and let them crawl around inside my shirt plus give them my body heat too.

If you are referring to a snake reading my mind I 'm joking. Snakes can't read people's minds but I'm just expressing he is really good at detecting what he think I'm doing. He somehow can sense or get a good idea when I take a rodent out of the fridge and thaw it in the sink. The kitchen is in the other part of the home and his space has two doors that get shut. He's got a very sensitive tongue. Mind you I have 3 others boas and they aren't as good at reading my intentions.
