In this video I introduce the new Techart Adapter TZM-02 which enables Nikon-Z cameras to shoot Leica-M mount lenses with fast autofocus tracking. I play with the adapter by mounting various Leica-M lenses, a Voigtlaender lens and I also show that stacking additional adapters on top of the TZM-02 is not reducing autofocus speed and precision. I test for autofocus tracking and face & eye recognition for still images and in video mode. The TZM-02 has my full recommendation.

03:00 The TZM-02 has high build quality and feels valuable
03:26 Comparison of the TZM-02 with the TZM-01

20:23 Leica Apo-Summicron-M 75/2 on Macro adapter on TZM-02
20:51 Autofocus tracking also works with stacked adapters
21:29 Voigtlaender lenses on the TZM-02 on the Nikon Z9
22:13 Stacked adapters work but the form factor is essential
23:48 Another autofocus example of a stacked adapter setup
25:08 Wrap-up, recommendations and conclusions
You can purchase the adapter here:
techartpro.com/?product=techa...
Some additional "late-in-time" remarks on infos I got from Techart when the video was already finalized:
A USB dock back cap will come with every adapter, my one was an engineering sample that did not yet provide that feature.
If you want to stack other adapters on top of the TZM-02, its best to go for adapters from Techart because then you can be sure they fit onto the TZM-02. But please always check to be on the safe side.

Thanks Math for this interesting video. For the Z9, I too had considered adapting my Leica lenses with this adapter respective its predecessor. However, my current 35mm and 50mm Summiluxes and the current Noctiluxes I use (which are too heavy for the adapter anyway) have internal floating elements to improve the imaging performance at close range. If these lenses are simply moved away from the sensor and back again by the adapter, the floating elements are out of order. This means that the Leica lenses on this adapter are only "top-notch" in the infinite distance range. At closer distances, the imaging performance will decrease significantly, unless you focus manually despite the AF option. That's why I chose to manually focus my Leica lenses on the Z9 and use the high-quality Novoflex adapter, which only costs about 1/3 the price. By the way, manual focusing works wonderfully on the Z9 thanks to good focus peaking.
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer Жыл бұрын
Agree - for most Leica-M lenses its not relevant but if you have FLEs in the lens then these will not move since the adapter only moves the lens forth and back. That means some corrections might not be optimal and will need post-processing for corrections.
@lichtgestalt9540
@lichtgestalt9540 Жыл бұрын
i think, a quick manual prefocus will put the floating lenses in the right region and then autofocus for finetune the focus for the single pictures could be a practical workflow.
@emilhach6264
@emilhach6264 Жыл бұрын
@@lichtgestalt9540 I've got one of these adapters for Sony and what you're saying technically works, but... it takes the sponteneity out of it somewhat. On lenses longer than 50 mm, some pre-focusing is required, but then it takes some of the time away from action. I like that on wider focal length lenses (and even some 58 and a 75mm I've got), you can just park the lens in infinity and it just pops away without any thought into the focusing. I was out last night following a moving dog with a wide-open Leica R 50mm (with the LR-LM mount adapter sold by Techart) that had a diffuser and polarizer filter on it in the dusk. I don't want to be fussing with focus while one hand is on the dog's leash. This adapter makes shots that were almost impossible to make possible, so I don't buy floating element design lenses. I just need the thing to work. A quick manual pre-focus is required when using lenses with a reveresed-front element, but that's a workflow that's practical to get into (because how else you gonna get a crippled lens to autofocus), so I'm being a bit hippocritical, but you get what I mean. Use this adapter for its strengths and it really pays off -like when I use it with slide projector lenses from Leica and Pentacon. If it fits on the mount and the weight is ok, it's gonna do some really dazzling things.

Any thoughts on the Z9 or Z8 video ibis performance when using these manual adapted lenses? I love your videos, my favorite is when you mentioned how you enjoy the sound of the Sony f-stop rings and the adapter lever clicks. Sometimes I feel like these manufacturers forget that photography is also an art and ignore things like tactile and audible feedback for the user's enjoyment (I mainly shoot Canon and, while they make amazing lenses like the 28-70 f2L and 85mm f/1.2L, it frustrates me that they are mostly clad in cheap feeling plastic despite costing several thousand dollars each).

This seems like a very nice benefit, particularly if the adaptor is well machined and the AF works reasonably well. Combining Leica M glass with Nikon's fantastic sensors seems like a match made in heaven-and it'll be even more amazing when the Z8 (smaller high-performance body) arrives. I'd be idly curious to learn how those M series lenses compare in terms of IQ to the native S-Series Z lenses, which are, themselves, of extremely high optical performance. One question: Can you still manually focus your M lenses while they're mounted to the Techart adaptor, without any fuss? Being able to quickly shift to manual zone focusing would make this a very versatile setup, indeed.

Create a Z to dummy EF Mount for legacy glass to make much more room to engineer for increased rigidity and/or distance focused, etc. Dummy EF is the default short adapted SLR/DSLR mount. Especially useful where heavier, longer focus or macro lenses are used. Later can incorporate the electronics for EF lenses to use them both together so one can add an autofocus extension tube any time one likes to EF lenses. Additionally create the same as Nikon FTZ but with your extension and a screw drive motor for D lenses. The autofocus extension only engages near or at the close focus limit of the lens but perhaps better just an on/off switch initially rather than automatically transitioning. Dedicated Pentax AF, Minolta AF too later. Consider a shift lens version too for larger coverage lenses on smaller formats. Oops! Almost forgot our videographers... A port on the side for remote focus pull control. A PF mount wouldn't hurt either. Somebody should get to work to meet the pent-up demand. They could make a fortune if they can corner the market. These autofocus telescoping adapting extension tubes are the Contax AX concept finally done right.

You don’t have to set the adapted lens to infinity. With a floating element lens you can focus manually and then use the Techart to fine tune your focus. I’ve done this with the original Techart adapter (on a Sony camera) and an M mount Zeiss 35mm Distagon, which has a floating element.

I am sad to report that since I’ve upgraded the Z9 firmware to v4.0, when attaching the Techart TZM02 adapter the camera started giving me an error. I have used the dock to upgrade the adapter firmware to the latest version and the error went away however the exposure isn’t working predictably. I am setting my camera to an exposure and when I take the picture it comes out overexposed. You can literally see an overexposed burst when taking a photo. I have stopped using the adapter in fear of damaging my camera. Are you having the same experience? Do you think that Techart will now update its firmware to bring it back to compatibility?

If you go to the section on seeing the adapter's motors in action, you can hear a bit of motor noise. I don't think its disturbing in video shooting but depending on how far the focus point moves forth and back from the camera it might be hearable.

I tried out the megadap adapter Leica-M to Nikon-Z some time back. Autofocus is much slower and tracking as well. Image quality is the same of course since there is no glass in the adapter. I used the megadap mainly for manual focus and did not use autofocus since focus was slow, hunting forth and back and just not enjoyable. Maybe also a firmware issue, I am not sure.

I can see if there is a firmware update since megadap makes their adapters also upgradeable for new features. Its a good adapter but much slower in focusing and tracking than the new Techart adapter.

In contrast to megadap's Leica-M to Nikon-Z, this one here which I reviewed is lightning fast and super reliable from all angles: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNl9ZreU2bqucoU.html Shows that megadap can produce the same quality and functions as TechArt. Interresting video for the use of the new TECHART adapter! KUDOS! I am really wondering, that you're using on all your top Leica glasses an UVa filter! Please, don't tell me now, that they are all made by Leica, and they are not influencing the optical qualities, at least a bit, of these fine lenses, if you're looking for the special Leica optical feelings! For protection O.K., Sorry, but not for an excellence optical quality! Every real optical experts will confirm this negativ influence of an extra filter glass! May be not so much the seller of these filters!

Thanks :) I was going to say what you anticipated :) Actually almost all UV filters on my Leica-M lenses are from Leica. On Leica-L lenses I also use other filters like Sigma Ceramic for instance or Carl Zeiss. And I think you are right, there might be or could be some discount on quality coming with it. I accept that because protecting these expensive glasses is important for me. And I am happy with the image quality I get despite filter. But technically your point is spot-on and correct.

I had a really bad experience with this adapter. It is now out of order and I lost 400 Euro. I bought this adapter last year in September 2023. First it worked fine and then suddenly during a shooting it stopped and never worked again. The Amazon seller send me a link to a strange website in Chinese to download the firmware update. After some intensive googeling I found the correct web site and the update download worked, the update app connects to the adapter via usb, but the adapter did not. The amazon seller did not respond to any of my e-mails. I just lost almost 400 Euro. So I think you should be warned. Luckily my Nikon z6ii was not destroyed. Maybe you have more luck than I got.

Yes indeed there is. I've been using the Sony version for over 6 months. It's worth the fuss, but whenever I change lenses, I stop down to f/11 and check at bright source to look for dust. I carry what I need to handle it. Like I said, it's worth the fuss because you can't get the results it gives too easily without it.

Thanks for telling us what it does on a Z6II. If the Z9 works like my A7IV/Techart LM-EA9 combo, then it's NOT easier to focus manually, not at all. I can use my A7IV one-handed without looking at the viewfinder and it's going to track eyeballs. If it won't do that on a Z6II, then that's really good for me to know because I want out of Sony color and have been thinking about which Nikon I'm going to replace it with to stay with the Techart tech. I suppose it's only as good as the focus system of the camera, but in my case, although there are things I could do better or faster manually, no one's best manual focus skills can compete with using this thing on the fly, at least on my camera system. It's really worth $4,000, not $400 for what it does for me to have autofocus on dozens of vintage lenses.

@@meitelis This is not my experience on my Sony with the LM-EA9. It's absolutely solid so long as I'm using it in the center. I don't try to use it ways that I know that will fail because old lenses aren't sharp or distorted towards the edges, so I keep a zone in the center and it will hunt for eyeballs, ect in that zone. It's way faster and more accurate than what could be done manually. I'm often using it one-handed without looking through the EVF or viewfinder. So what you're telling me is that the experience is different on Nikon? If so, that sucks, but are you trying to use it in ways that it doesn't like? My hit rate is not 100%, but well over 75%. I would hate to think that I'm stuck with Sony color if the tech don't work on Nikon. I'll try it out myself this week and find out I guess.

@Emil Hach I'm not sure if that's only mine adapter, but it definitely doesn't work as expected. It freezes very often to the point that you have to take it off and mount it again. Also it's very loud. I'm not sure that it's hardware issue of the adapter, because sometimes it acts absolutely normally. But most of the time it's unpredictable to the point that I developed OCD about it. For critical shooting I trust myself manually rather adapter. And to me it defies the purpose of owning it. Maybe if it was 50€ I'd say you could get it and play a bit with it, but for 350€ you'd expect but more finished/polished product. 😮

Thanks RS - except of one image they should all be sharp the way I see them in Lightroom. One is indeed a little bit blurry and a second one has a super thin DoF, all the others are really sharp, pin-point sharp :) I cannot exactly say what aperture each image has since I did not (in contrast to how I explained it later in the video @13:06) change the aperture in the camera body with every aperture move on the lens. I would do it diligently like I explained in the video, always matching camera aperture info and aperture setting on lens, in a studio shooting but not in the field, it was just too tedious. So I changed the aperture on the lens several times without aligning the aperture setting on camera body. But all images are shot between widest open f/1.2 and around f/2.8 if I remember correctly. When shooting live in the field next time, I probably should follow my own tutorial more consciously and align camera aperture info and lens aperture setting ;)

Works well with the Voigtlaender lens I tested. But you need to check whether that lens unmount lever on the adapter is potentially getting in the way when mounting a Voigtlaender lens. I later looked into this again, and the Voigtlaender lens I used in the video can be mounted easily and without flaws but I tried one other Voigtlaender lens and here, when mounting, this lever on the adapter was a tiny little bit in the way. So I believe that most Voigtlaender lenses fit well but there might be some where the form factor gets a bit in conflict with that lever on the adapter. So better always trying this out in a store before purchasing a Voigtlaender lens for the adapter ... better being on the safe side.

@@mathphotographer Thanks for your explanation. Excellent. Isn't it time for you to use C1 cause LR isn't catching up Check out Exposure vs Brightness / One Reason Why Capture One is better it will be explained with samples (great video ). That alone would be a reason. I shot some night shots 6 a.m. just a couple of days before Christmas, here at the Dam Square in Amsterdam There were Christmas trees and lights and guess what, till 7 a.m. I was the only one walking the streets, bit weird of a rather big city. Now I shot ISO 100 and around 1.7 - 2.0 at 1/60 handheld (didn't bring a tripod) but then the shots were 2 to 3 stops under exposed so in the viewfinder the shots were almost black. Since the sensor is ISO invariant it is better to correct in post than adding a higher ISO (caveat is that jpg are worthless then, but who cares) At home I loaded the RAW's in C1 and instead of adding 2 stops with the exposure slider I adjusted the exposure with the Brightness slider, man that is a real positive difference. Of course I had some chroma noise in sky but throttling the Black slider back till that was gone gave a great result. Thanks again, nice weekend !
