After seeing a LaserDisc copy of "Airplane" at my local record store for $2.50, I couldn't help but get a LaserDisc player. Luckily, I found a Pioneer LP-V8000 locally for just $35.

Wow, I've tripped across some industrial Pioneer decks before, but haven't seen a unit with rack mounts. I hear from people just getting into the format a lot, and most of them seem to be starting off with these older models cast off from schools etc. Very cool that they're finding a second life on the collector's market!

Actually the player was made in Japan, however, there were disc pressing plants in several countries including Japan & USA. The laser pickup mechanism shouldn’t be that slow, the various places there is lubrication, it is dried/gummed up, needs cleaned and re-lubricated, also the same for the drawer…if this model has belts, those may also need replaced. This is actually not too difficult to do, and you’ll be surprised how well it works after this.

Wow! That's a dinosaur there. Believe it or not there was a version of Laserdisc that predates this one. I remember in the late 80s obsessing over them until I finally got one. I bought ET on Laserdisc before I even had the player. You mentioned artists that put albums out. ELO was one of those and it came out in that pre Laserdisc era. Very cool stuff for it's time.

The Pioneer LP-V8000 models is actually a player that people use to upgrade their Dragon's Lair and Space Ace cabinets so the skipping would be none to less annoying.

That was really cool; consumer media predating the digital era is so interesting. It'll be pretty cool to watch one of your retro reviews on the product and it's technology. A review of that Vizio would be amazing too.

Quinn, I really enjoy your vlogs, I think you should be more active on this channel, and also your random "ghetto" unboxings that you used to do back in the day! haha. And the quality of the video is really awesome btw. And I'm also born in April '93! lol

Hmm, very interesting. I had heard of laserdics obviously, but never actually seen one until this video lol. I went straight from vcrs at home until I got my own laptop that took dvds, so I kinda skipped over these. It would be interesting to see a background video on them.

This player is not an auto reverse unit and thus you have to remove the disc and flip it to play side 2.

That's an industrial player. More meant for running for hours on end than quality/convenience, very unusual that it has auto-flip. I'm not so sure that it's supposed to take 2 minutes for the laser to move over to the other side, that seems significantly long, and the video looks a bit fuzzy - either could be indicative of a mechanical fault. My player by contrast flips to the other side in about 6 seconds

_"very unusual that it has auto-flip"_ The LD-V8000 doesn't have dual-side play. It's a single-side play unit.

When my brother died, I inherited his Pioneer Laser Disc player and a lot of Laser Discs. Two of the laser discs have turned like a white frosted color. One of those disks plays but has no sound and the other one plays but has a lot of noise and it skips. Can those discs be fixed? Another question if you don't mind. How and with what should I the clean the laser discs . There are a few XXX discs which I have not had the courage to watch yet so I don't know what condition those are in.
@plwinkler
@plwinkler 7 жыл бұрын
The frosted discs can't be fixed. A eyeglass lens cleaner or a computer screen cleaner and some disposable microfiber cloths should be appropriate for cleaning your discs.

_"Two of the laser discs have turned like a white frosted color."_ Do those two discs have "MADE IN USA BY 3M" printed on the aluminum close to the label? What are the titles?

Your disc didn't had disc rot.. the pops you saw where dust particles, because the film was optically scanned, actual disc rot are like dust speks of various colours streaking around the screen. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7e/Laser_Rot.jpg/220px-Laser_Rot.jpg
