A lot of people seem to forget that electronics haven't changed that much over the years. I'm seeking out RF design books from 1990 to 2018. The older books seem to be much more detailed.

When I was in the electronics world, decades ago, I used 'The Art of Electronics' as a pretty regular companion at my bench. At one point I was responsible to recommend technicians for hire for what was then a cutting edge technology, DWDM, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing, HP and Tektronix made our test equipment we had a number of S/N 1 or S/N A equipment in for evaluation. I never interviewed a US Navy tech that I didn't recommend, as I found all of them to be structured enough to listen to instructions as well as being able to think outside of the box when required.

Forrest Mims also wrote the two project books that came with the Radio Shack 300 Projects kit. (I believe it was the last one RS did). The format is the same as his other electronics books, and as an added bonus, you had all the parts and components you needed to assemble the circuits. I bought one new a few years back, and stumbled on a used one for $5.00 (US) in a Goodwill thrift store last year. I bought it mainly for the breadboard so I could use it for other projects (assuming that the parts were long gone), but when I got it home I realized that it had never been used. The parts were still in the package, and both books were there, so I checked it out, put fresh batteries in it, and passed it on to one of the kids at our church who was helping me with the sound system. Oh, I still use the first one on a regular basis.

After viewing your videos, especially the ones on classic circuits, I believe you'd be the ideal person to complete a series of videos on introductory electronics. Firstly, you speak clear English that is easily comprehended. Secondly, you know what you are talking about. Thirdly, your past videos show the quality you can produce. Fourthly, you are a amateur radio operator. The suggestion I have is a series of videos based upon the electronics-related content of the ARRL Handbook for Radio Communication. Chapters on: electrical fundamentals, radio fundamentals, circuits and components, RF techniques, computer aided circuit design, power sources, oscillators and synthesizers, filtering, modulation, receiving, transmitting, RF power amplifiers, transmission lines, antennas, test equipment, troubleshooting and maintenance, RFI, and safety. I know I'd donate $100-$200 to the "cause" to make it worth your time....and I'm sure others would be on the bandwagon as well. I have been a ham since 1992 (age 15-ish) and recently upgraded to the general class license about one year ago. If videos like yours had been around in 1992 I might have changed my college degrees from Business to Electronics. Keep up the good work. Alex-N9QIW.

What do you think of Practical Electronics for Inventors vs ARRL book? I was thinking about starting with the Getting Started With Electronics book, then followed by Make Electronics. Then perhaps the practical book.. but I don't know if I should read the ARRL book first. The Art of Electronics will come last or just a reference later on after liearn the stuff in these other books. Also what do you tbhink about "All New Electronics"... should I read that after the Forest book or should I read ARRL instead? Sorry for all the questions.

Thumbs up. However ARRL books, some more than others have been known to have errors and such. I just got my BITX 40 on digital mode working and having QSO's and picked up my General Manual for review, and under sending and receiving digital modes it said digital modes are transmitted on Lower Side Band except JT65 and JT9. Google results say most digital is Upper Side Band, and my club friends say it's USB, and if I hadn't known their books may have mistakes I would have believed this and fought against everyone who is actually right. Fortunately for me I originally learned it was USB and not LSB, and was only confused when I saw this in review. That Handbook should be in everyone's personal library, and I imagine most mistakes have been reported along the years until it's pretty reliable now.

You don't say what country you live in, so this may or may not be helpful to you. Full price for the latest and greatest is a lot of money, but like the man says, you can get an earlier edition for much less. Anything in the last 10 years or so would serve the needs of most hobbyists. Check out Ebay if you have access to it where you are, and look for used copies. You can often pick up a copy for $10 USD or sometimes less. Also, find out when and where the amateur radio meets are in your country. I don't think I have ever been to a hamfest that I didn't see quite a few used ones for sale. Just look for the best deal you can afford. Also, check with your local public library. They may have a copy of a recent Handbook you can check out. You can also seek out the hams and ham clubs in your area. One of them may have the book and let you borrow it, but the greatest benefit in meeting the hams in your area is that there are some real electronics gurus among them. Good luck!

I had to go back a step or two and found out the the best book for electronics was a maths book ! If your math is not up to scratch you will struggle with even basic electronics theory as i did and still do to some extent . I often wonder where we will be in fifty years as micros seem to be taking over everything and the old ways are diminishing fast so all that training and theory in electronics may well be lost . Will we eventually become a plug and play / replace society ?
