I get the impression on every IDI video that it's like looked down upon to have an IDI or something. Subaru's have been my car hobby for years and I've just started getting into trucks and after a ton of research these seam the most badass to me😆

When I got my 94 IDI turbo I was told these trucks were never designed to do 10 seconds in the quarter mile. They are a poor man's power stroke. However, I was just told that there are still farm equipment 60 years old in the midwest still pulling heavy loads and working all day with these IDI's in them. They were built to patrol the roads looking for jacked up broken down hot rod Powerstrokes that need to get to a repair house LOL.

I grew up in a die hard dodge house. Grandpa, uncle, and dad all have 12v Cummins. My first diesel was a LB7 Duramax and it treated me well but I got bored and really didn’t want to get that injector bill one day so I traded it for a rust free 150,000mile 92’ 7.3 IDI with a 94’ turbo and drove it 7 hours back home, had bad fuel leaks but manage to limp it home. With no experience with these trucks and some hick ingenuity I was able to clear up all leaks and got her to run very healthy. For the most part very easy motor to work on and simple to diagnose at home. Not a single regret with this truck fell inlove instantly

sounds awesome. Van engines don't get nearly as big here in Europe, but I had a little van with a N/A 1.9d made by Citroen, and one day the whole exhaust just fell off...rusted through where the exhaust levels out under the engine so turned it into a screamer pipe, damn thing sounded like it had a V12 Merlin from a Spitfire. Hilarious. Wish I got it on video...

Damn Dude. I love your truck. That is one of the cleanest interiors for a '90s truck I've seen in a long time. Dash is not all messed up like so many. I just got my 94 250 turbo IDI out of paint and body and wow, after new grill, bumper, lights, and mirrors that bad boy looks fly. It ran so good when I bought it with a nice interior I figured it was worth the $$$ to do paint and body, even a new bed. But now I've got this problem with it runs great for a few miles ten feels like it's running out of gas, then stalls. After cranking it fires back up but does the same thing all over again. Put a new fuel pump on it hoping that would solve the problem, but it's doing the same thing. Have you ever had that problem? My first diesel ever so am a newbie to them. Still scratching my head. Did you ever have that problem? You sound like you know a lot more about these IDI's then I ever will.
@rustymountain4004 Жыл бұрын
Sounds lile a fuel issue for sure, if you changed the fuel pump and your 100% sure its good and you have good fuel flie at the injection pump. I would have to assume its an injection pump issue, may be time to replace it.

@@rustymountain4004 That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for commenting though. I was hoping it was just air getting into the system somehow. Thanks so much. PS that truck of yours really does deserve a paint job at least. The rest of it seems so clean. Is there a simple way to check if the injector pump is the culprit? This is my first diesel and everything mechanical is hit and miss Hate to spend 600.00 on a pump If it could be something else. What kind of pressure should I be looking for coming out of the pump?
@rustymountain4004 Жыл бұрын
@johnnyohness I honestly dont know that answer. i would guess the fuel cutoff in the pump is the culprit maybe. But i have heard of them just loosing pressure when they heat up.. I have only had one actually have an IP go bad, and it did something simular to your truck. I just replaced the pump, if you do replace it buy a good one from R&D idi performance, not a junk reman..

@@rustymountain4004 Thanks so much for your advice. I'm still hoping somehow somewhere it's sucking air somewhere. Maybe a fitting old cracked rubber hose. LOL I have so much money in this beast I have to keep going, or lose everything. These projects are like painting a room in the house. Now you have to do the hallway because the new paint makes it look bad, then the bathroom, then the living room on and on. I know these are supposed to be simple engines but to someone like me, it's like taking on quantum physics if you are starting from scratch. I'm 72 who thinks I'm going on 35. I love trucks but never had a diesel. Maybe I got in this game a little late not being a pro knuckle buster ever before but thanks to people like you who are so generous with good advice. You're never too old to keep learning. Thanks for all your advice, I do really appreciate it. Thanks again so much.

I've dealt with this problem on multiple IDI's. If it runs good for the 10 miles, then you have an air intrusion issue. These trucks are really bad for it. Replace fuel lines, pickup tubes in the tanks, or run fuel from an alternative source with a decent fuel pump straight up to the fuel filter to bypass all the lines at the back of the truck. If she runs like a dream, then that was your problem.

Did you find air in the lines ? Had a 1986 idi and the return lines are almost a maintenence item . Did anyone mess with the injection pump ? . They are very simple and outstanding engines . If all else fails ...USE ETHER ! See If it fires
