Recently purchased a 4 Week My Patriot Supply Survival Food Pack from My Patriot Supply just to have peace of mind in case of an emergency and there was some sort of food shortage. Decided to do a quick video to explain it and perform a taste test.
I purchased the produce here: mypatriotsupply.com/

Thank you for this review! We've been buying long-term food storage, the majority of which is from My Patriot Supply. We've been wondering about the quality of the food and this gives us some reassurance. I think we'll try some for ourselves now. Speaking of supplemental foods to have with them; we've been adding basics of flour, sugar, salt, other spices, quick oats, noodles and sauces etc. that have a longer shelf life as well. As you say, we're hoping that in the event of a real food catastrophe, the combination of slightly "fresher" foods with the long term storage will get us by for longer than the listed time frame on these boxes. Thanks again!

I think it's a good idea to start small, and actually try this food before investing in large quantities, and find the things you and your family like to store up for the longer haul. I've tried the MPS food that way, and liked most of what I've tried a lot. the smaller kits - sample kits, and the (one week?) food-in-a-plastic-ammo-box kit are fine ways to try a little of the food to see what works and what to expect. And what could be worse than investing in hundreds or thousands of dollars of this stuff, only to find out when it really matters that you would rather eat bug-burgers than try to survive on the "survival" food? In my experience, the southwestern rice, chili mac, potato soup, orange drink, and chicken rice are winners for me, stuff I could eat pretty regularly. (The traveler's stew wasn't bad, but I'm with the reviewer: the chili mac would be an improvement :) ) The orange drink is basically orange kool-ade, which can probably be found cheaper at the local grocer, but it's good stuff, especially with a few freeze-dried strawberries mixed in as an extra treat and garnish. I'd say I liked the majority of the food I tried well enough as-is to survive on, though you'll probably want to be sure to stock up some extras to go with it - freeze-dried meat, vegetables, and fruit, for example, and rice, beans, pasta, potatoes, and the like to bulk things out a bit with. Seasonings, dry soups (like Bear Creak soups), and dry sauce mixes of the sort that most groceries stock in generic store-brand packs for a few dozen cents a pack (spaghetti, taco, chili, brown/chicken/turkey gravy, beef stew) aren't a bad idea to add as ell. Canned meats (canned chicken, tuna, beef, turkey), canned sausages, and jerky and hard sausages (pepperoni, etc.) are a good idea as well. These items can really help out a lot where the MPS meals as-is just aren't quite enough (like the packs of plain, unseasoned white rice!) The down side was that some of the meals were bland and a bit depressing - I'm looking at you, strawberry cream-of-wheat and maple oatmeal! I'm not sure exactly what, but both of the hot cereal options needed a little something to liven them up - in an emergency situation, you'll want all the comfort you can get, especially something cheerful to wake up to, and the hot cereal as-is just doesn't quite make it. I tried adding some freeze-dried strawberries to the cream-of-wheat, and topping the oatmeal with some maple syrup, and it doesn't help very much, so I'm not sure what's still missing... salt and butter maybe? Likewise, there's the aforementioned white rice: a wonderful food, but without a little salt at least, or some stew or something to ladle on top, it's just incomplete. A source of fresh vegetables to supplement the food, even if it's just fresh herbs or garnishes, would be priceless in a longer-term bug-in situation, like a long-time food shortage. Onions, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, whatever might grow well in your region with little or no maintenance in a small window garden or whatever else you can get to work would surely be worth their weight in gold if you can't buy them and have nothing else but canned and dried food to look forward to. Anyway, your mileage will likely vary according to taste, but the only way to find out what to stock and what to avoid, and what to add to your stash to make it a pleasure to eat when everything else is falling apart, is to actually eat a little of the food you stock every now and then, starting with the oldest food (so you can rotate the stock so that you use the old stuff before it loses quality sitting around), and replacing it during better times with newer stock. Personally, I think the occasional "survival night" after bringing in some new food is kind of fun for a change of pace: try a night without electric lights to get along by candlelight or lanterns or whatever your back up light options are, or a night where you cook on a grill or propane stove or whatever your backup cooking option is, etc., grab some of your older survival food, and try it out, and try to honestly picture what it would be like to live on that food for the longer time... does the food work for you? If not, can it be salvaged? Creative ways to dress up something that's salvageable are fun, if you invent a good recipe, jot it down and keep it with your survival food. And, sometimes you just find something that doesn't work - you'll want to find that out sooner than later, and if you and your family absolutely don't like it, get it out of your supply so that it doesn't take up room. Maybe it can be donated anonymously to a homeless shelter? Maybe donated to other preppers you know who might like it better? Maybe you know someone who is willing to trade something more useful? No sense in having it take up space, or trying to inflict it on yourself and your family if nobody likes it, and it's much better to find out early what the "losers" are than to find out in an emergency that you'll have to dispose of weeks worth of something you didn't realize was disgusting!

I had been buying long term food supplies before COVID when it would be for sale but never tried it thinking that if things went bad even if it didn't taste great it would be better than nothing. My goal was to eventually have enough for not just myself but also my adult children, who refused to prep previously, and their families for up to 5 years. When we be were required to work from home I decided to try living off short term pantry for the first month since I hadn't been good at rotating supplies since I preferred fresh. It was an eye opening experience and extended for a year with minimal purchases of dairy and the fresh greens I grow. In addition to short term I decided to open up some of the long term to see how it tasted. There was some pretty disgusting stuff in there. It was various brands. After this experience I decided to change up a few things. 1. Family and friends who previously hadn't been receptive to prepping we're now happy to accept donations of 6 months worth of various long term foods, even the so called vegetable stew (note:. If you see any long term supplier selling something called that specifically DON'T buy it!!!! It is vile). It gives them a base to start with. 2. Found that I prefer to use single ingredient long term foods rather than prepared meals, such as dried potatoes or veggies, freeze dried meats, pasta, etc. Of the different brands of prepared meals the only ones I kept were Mountain House but I do have dried ingredients in gallon cans and buckets to make many different meals 3. Short term pantry will have be mostly home canned meats and vegetables which have much better flavor and shelf life than store bought. 4. Will always keep gardening seeds on hand. I can have microgreens within 2 weeks and a number of greens like bok choi, baby spinach and lettuces in 30 days or less and a larger variety in 60 days or less. I hadn't realized how much I would miss having fresh anything. They always say not to prep what you don't like but it can be very easy to tell yourself that if times are tough enough it won't matter. It really does. In the short term pantry I knew that I prefer homemade but went ahead and bought plenty of ready made soups, stew, etc because they had tasted good when I was young. I got where I was gagging over some of them. The good news was that I am friends with a large family who were willing to accept dozens and dozens of canned items that there kids were excited about. My pantry is changing a lot.

I agree with the short term vs long term pantry preps. Canned veggies, fruits, soups and meats are better for the 1-2 yrs rotating pantry. But for long term, i also only liked the taste of Mountain House. I agree with you though that it is better to buy freeze dried individual ingredients and seeds for the fresh. At least you could cook what you want. 😊

If you will look closer at the sides of those boxes, near the back edge, you will see a "pullable" strap-like bit of thin plastic which you then are supposed to pull all around the top-edge to free the top so you can more easily open the lid. Pushing down on the lid, it will "snap" back into place, resealing the lid.

1000 calories a day is plenty. For health reasons I used to fast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and at the first of every month I would fast for 72hrs. All of this is with zero calories. I would only have water, black coffee and sometimes herbal tea with zero calories. I am 6ft tall and hover around 180 to 185 extremely muscular to the point people always call me big guy. So in other words I not only survive but thrive on 800 calories a day when you average out the week. We need a lot less food than we are told and I personally believe 2000 calories is way way to much. Once a month now I still fast for three days in a row but aside from that period I usually eat every day but only one time so essentially a 23 hour fast everyday.

Part of preparedness is an overall plan. It should always start by building a pantry. Basements with QUALITY shelving stocked full of dry goods and canned goods. You should have enough food to eat comfortably for a considerable amount of time. Canned meats are a great way to have a VERY comfortable way to ride out a major disruption of the supply chain. You need to be able to last a couple of months without having major concerns about where the next meal is coming from.

This is a crazy amount of money for a little bit of cheap, starchy stuff. It also requires a lot of water and energy to prepare; both of which could be in short supply, or even completely absent when the balloon goes up. Everybody should be learning pressure canning. That's meat, potatoes, vegetables; ready to eat with or without energy. If done and kept correctly, pressure canned foods will last for years.

Thanks for the demonstration. My uncle asked me to place an order for him today. When you tested the southwestern rice, it’s clear that is a family size prepared side of rice. So how do they recommend to prepare these? Is that rice packet supposed to be all that you eat in a day? Or are you supposed to only prepare a portion of the pouch with a portion of a main? Not sure how they recommend you eat these and know you’re getting 2000 calories a day. Thanks in advance for the explanation.
@GrayTrend
@GrayTrend 3 ай бұрын
OK, looks like they place the number of calories per serving on each package (ex. Long White Rice is 170 calories per serving, serving size is 1/4 cup, and there are 10 servings in each package; Mac & Cheese is 320 calories per serving, serving size is 1/3 cup, and there are 4 servings per container). So you would have to open certain packages first and start rationing it out per serving size per day and use the opened packages first until the food is gone, then start opening the next unopened package you want to start eating food from and that is supposed to get you your ~2000 calories per day. Hope this helps as I learned from this as well. Best of luck to you and your Uncle!!!

Definitely a wise idea to try the food before you invest in large quantities of it. I've tried it, and it's a mixed bag of food that I found pretty tasty, food that needed just a little something extra, and food that was just too bland and depressing for my taste, with most of the stuff I tried leaning toward the better end of that spectrum. I didn't find anything I thought was inedible, but then, I never tried that mac-and-cheese! The smaller, short-term kits are a great way to try-before-you-buy in large quantities to see what works for you and your family: the 72-hour or 1-week kits or whatever aren't too expensive, and give a reasonable introduction to what you can expect. These MPS meal kits don't really stand on their own very well, in my opinion, you're better served adding some meats, vegetables, and other items to things like the traveler's stew, black bean soup, and whatever. Also, you're probably better off picking-and-choosing individual items from the online store to stock based on your personal preferences and tastes, while avoiding the stuff you know you wont like. Chili mac and southwestern rice and potato soup are things I know I'm going to like, so I bought those in bulk, while avoiding things like the mushroom pilaf or the creamy alfredo pasta were destined to creep me out and were best avoided. Better to pick-and-choose what you have already tried and know you like, than to get a pre-packaged "one year supply" of food and then find out on day one of the emergency that half of the stuff is inedible for you, and then you have to figure out how to trade it for something you will like without letting random starving strangers know you have the luxury of sitting on a mountain of food you can turn your nose up at! It's possible that some people aren't going to like this sort of thing at all - if you can't stand hot cereal, hamburger-helper, rice,and beans, then this sort of meal kit is going to be torture for you. Even if you like this food, keeping some other food stored with it is an excellent idea: canned food, other brands of survival food (like MREs or the Mountain House camping meals), and so on can give your stock of food a merciful variety it wouldn't otherwise have. And, it's notable that MPS will pack these kits with things that you can probably find cheaper on your own: beans, rice, macaroni and powdered cheese sauce, orange drink mix (basically Kool-ade), and the like are no doubt easy to find on the cheap at your local grocery, and some of those items should really form the foundation of any food prep supply (it's a good idea to buy bulk rice and beans from your local grocery, and use/rotate them regularly to keep them from going rancid over the long term!) Sure, they might not last for MPS' advertised 25-year shelf life* (with fine print) or whatever, but they'll last long enough, and are something that you should be using pretty regularly anyway so that they shouldn't really have a chance to sit around for 25 years! And if you're not buying or using beans and rice already, you probably shouldn't start on day one of a disaster with some supplied at a premium by MPS, because if you don't like beans and rice already, then you're not going to suddenly start liking it because an earthquake, flood, or awakening of Great Cthulhu destroyed the world! A small amount mixed into a food kit here and there isn't going to hurt anything even if you don't normally like beans and rice, but certainly there's no sense in having MPS sell you a large amount of them when they are cheaper from your grocery, or when you don't like them. Anyway, common sense applies here, as in all things, and I think it's common sense to try a little of something like this, before you commit to a large amount, and try to be realistic about whether this is something you can do over a period of days, weeks, months, or even years, before spending a lot of money on it.

How do you boil water to pour on the food if there is no electricity?
@GrayTrend
@GrayTrend 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! There are a couple of avenues I'll take to boil water in an emergency. I do have natural gas in my home and my stove works during power outages. If for some reason my stove stops working, I have 4 (20 pound) propane tanks and always keep at least 2 of them stored full. I also have 36 small 16 ounce propane tanks in storage in case of emergencies (there is no limit to their shelf life if stored properly in a cool dry place). I plan to use the propane to boil water and cook outside on my grill if needed. My way may not be the best way to do this. Several people plan for emergencies in several different ways. I've lived through hurricanes before and power outages that have lasted more than a week, week and a half at most, so this is how I plan to live through an emergency like that. Best of luck to you!!!

My research has found they are a marketing business that put together a product to sell and…..market. Their food sources not known to be the best as compared to others like Mountain House. Numerous reviews stated the 25 year sealed Mylar bags were not sealed. If your counting on something like this it’s best to make sure the odds are in your favor that you will be able to consume when needed and it does not kill you. Canned goods keep quite long there is no law making them put a “best used by” date. They put one based on taste and texture maybe changing. By putting a date they know most will throw out and BUY MORE. Start by putting up a year supply of canned and dry goods. The dry goods are best transferring to a Mylar bag sealed with an oxygen absorber to keep out new and kill hatching bugs…(though the extra protein won’t kill you…;^) ) I eat tuna, soup, Spam etc right from the can…have a number of can openers ready. Set for one year … then if you can move into freeze dried. Be sure to store water….safely

I am wondering how these compare to MREs. In the military we ate MREs all the time. The key with an MRE, it has the entire meal and everything that is part of that meal include crackers, peanut butter, coffee, hot cocoa and even the toilet paper. These seem like you have to find what you are looking to eat and have to go get the other side dishes that go with the main meal. Just seems like more work where the MRE just give someone the bag and let them open it and enjoy all the items that are in it.
@GrayTrend
@GrayTrend Жыл бұрын
That's funny, I was just thinking about that myself. I do know that the newer MREs are in pouches and use a separate heater pouch with a small amount of water to cook the meal. I've also read that MREs have a shelf life of 5 to 7 years. I might get myself some and review it on the channel. It is supposed to be some pretty good food. Thanks for your comment!
@teutonicc
@teutonicc Жыл бұрын
5 year shelf life for a complete meal (MRE) vs. 25 shelf life for individual meal items. The MRE advantage goes to having a self contained cooking feature and some also include the water necessary for cooking. For myself I see this as food to get thru a period of Supply chain disruption and like the individual items as I usually have enough canned items to supplement the meal.
@GrayTrend
@GrayTrend Жыл бұрын
@@teutonicc Thanks for the comment! Yes, being new to MRE & Survival Food, it’s all very interesting to me. I do understand it is extremely helpful to have canned food to supplement any other type of emergency food you plan to use during an emergency. While searching to purchase MREs today, I found that they are much more expensive than the My Patriot, Ready Product, or ReadyWise 25 year “meals in a bucket” type survival food. Not that I wouldn’t want the MREs. I’ve heard a lot about how good they taste and how they have much more to eat, among other items, associated with each meal (like gum, crackers, matches, bread sticks, etc.). So, like I said, I’m learning as I go here and in a survival setting I’ll take what I can get. On Amazon it costs $120 for 12 MRE meals. I haven’t checked elsewhere, but if that’s the going rate for MREs, I’ll most likely have to stick with the other survival food. I might purchase a small amount of MREs, then supplement with canned food I have in the house and with my survival food as the days/weeks go by. What do you think?

Good assessment of the product. However, my questions are, how are you going to prepare those meals on your stove if the electrical grid goes out and you have no electricity? Assuming you have a gasoline generator, how are you going to keep it running if you can't get any gasoline from your local gas station and the generator is designated for your refrigerator to keep your food from spoiling? It's one thing to have the survival food but it's quite another thing to have the ability to prepare it when there is no electricity and no ability to obtain the gasoline for a generator if you have one.

What ever makes you feel good. Not sure how your going to fit all that and enough water in your back packs. If you are separated from your property and on foot all that food requires water, heat etcetera. Everyone seems to think they will remain in their homes when things go sideways which is an unrealistic assumption. That stuff is fine if you lose power for a couple weeks but in my opinion useless for something like a year or more grid failure or other disaster of prolonged duration. People get ugly in ugly situations, your packed pantry will be taken by force or simply looted if you had to evac on a moment's notice (cant carry it all). Be prepared for a quick evacuation and survival outdoors and on foot.

Thanks for the comment! I didn’t know what Bio-engineered ingredients meant so I did a little research. “Bioengineered”, or "BE" for short, is the federal government's new term for Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). GMOs are used in up to 80% of conventional processed foods in the United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed the Non-GMO Project Product Verification Program (PVP) to preserve and build our non-GMO food supply and easily identify non-GMO products. Look for the Butterfly symbol on packaging to keep GMOs out of your shopping cart. Consumers concerned about GMOs seek to avoid them, and search for products that don't contain them. The Bioengineered Food labeling law is ineffective at finding GMOs and avoiding GMOs, largely because of restrictions, loopholes and exemptions. Too much falls outside of the law's purview for it to be effective. That's why the Butterfly remains the most rigorous, transparent and trustworthy label for GMO avoidance. I guess I’ll look for the butterfly myself from now on, but in time of need in an emergency, before I starve, I’ll eat the survival food. Best of luck to you!

Thank you for your video. I dunno, ... $177 would buy me enough food to feed myself for months and months. Nothing fancy mind you. But that's what the site for your "products" said I'd have to pay for them. Fine if you can justify the expense. So this is what I'd have to do, .... For instance, last fall I bought a half ton of whole Wheat for $200. Whole Wheat could be seen as the "rice" of the North. The "staff" of life it's been called, .. if I remember right. So $100 would have gotten me 500lbs. Boiled into a gruel and flavored with whatever you got, ... dead squirrel? How about a handful of smelts? Caught fresh at the harbor. Ground into flour and make bread. Sprouted into Wheat Grass (chickens love it!)(and one pound of seed makes multiple pounds of living, nutritious, sprouts) The Salsa the local dollar store was selling for $3.50 a jar reached its BBD (best before date) and they dropped the price to fifty cents a jar. Twenty bucks bought me 40 jars of good Salsa and that will spice up a whack of food. One jar a week eh? But then again, I have the deep dark, cold, and dry subbasement to store it in. What a difference that kind of storage makes. What's that? $120? Fifty Seven Dollars will get me some beans and rice with some spices. Not a lot, but enough to break up the monotony of the (bleeping) Wheat. Can't go without a little salt, ... $30 spent on rice "right here", and "right now", only buys me 16kg rice (35lbs) That's a half cup of raw rice a day for 120 days, .... every second day and it would last 240 days, ... It wasn't that long ago that the same $30 would have bought me 24kg rice (50lbs) Beans have gotten pricy as well with two, 2lb bags selling for $5.50. Just crazy prices now and they are drying up too. The Bean section used to be twenty feet long and now it's reduced to a couple of six foot lengths of shelving. BUT! $22 would get me 16lbs beans, ... I know, we need more than that. Oh well, cut back some on that (bleeping) Wheat eh? And $5 bucks for the salt! AGGHHH!!!! But! I would last a good year eating wise, instead of a miserable four weeks. ... Just saying. And in that year I would be able to scrape together some more food I'm sure, .... my garden and my chickens. Just so you know, this is the first year in four years that my chickens haven't been wiped put by foxes or raccoons, and hawks. ... They are in full time lock down now. I have to find more fertilized eggs come spring to hatch out the flock I want. And it was a terrible year for gardening here, for me anyway. If it wasn't for the neighbors Market Garden that I kept raiding, I'd have no veggies this winter! Heaven forbid. I managed to scrape together $100 over the summer and when I ran into the owner of the Market Grden I slipped it into his hand. "What's this for" he says. "For all the Garden Raiding I've been doing" I reply. "Much appreciated" he said. It pays to be an honest thief. BTW, my total income is $475 a month here in the gateless, guard-less, prison of despair called the Gulag of Poverty, ... But you wouldn't know anything about that place would you? ... Not yet anyway. Have a great one and good luck.

I ordered some stuff from PS. It never came. After a month of waiting. They are very fouled up. I called them over 30 times. It was a terrible experience. Their phone people can't help. No matter who I talked to. Very disappointed in this company.

Thanks for the comment! I've had two recent dealings with My Patriot Supply, both online purchases. One purchase in May and it took 3 business days for the delivery and one purchase a couple of weeks ago that took 3 business days to deliver as well. Luckily I haven't had to contact their service department. Hopefully you were able to cancel the order. If that happened to me I'd feel the same way. Hope you have a great 4th of July weekend!

I had to wait months for my freeze dried food, it eventually came. If you're expecting 2 day shipping from ANY of the freeze dried foods manufacturers right now, you're being unreasonable.

Too much cooking, Too much cleanup. Could buy off the shelf foods rice and spices for a fraction of the cost. I have rice and beans for long term. Mountain House for ease of preparation.

Thanks for the comment! A lot of people tell me about Mountain House meals when I tell them I have some videos about survival food. A couple were avid hikers and they bring Mountain House packs with them on their hikes and cook them along the way. I do need to look into Mountain House and see what it's like. As anyone can tell, I'm very new to all of this survival food stuff so I'm learning as I go. Appreciate that you watched the video!

Thanks for the comment! Looks like that's me! I had no idea I was supposed to tear off the plastic strips before opening the bucket. Like I said, I'd never seen freeze dried survival food before and was interested so I went ahead and purchased some. Then I took a video of my experience receiving, opening, reviewing, and tasting the stuff. Honestly, I didn't realize you were supposed to rip off the plastic "retaining" strip until I bought some Ready Patriot survival food and opened it. Appreciate that you watched the video.

Ridiculous. If you have to evacuate, you will have none of that refrigerated or pantry food. You can't take the time to pack coolers when your house is minutes away from catching fire. The fact that the containers are so hard to open is NOT a plus. Also, the containers are NOT resealed once opened. Once oxygen is introduced into the packages you can forget te 25 year claim.
