Hi Rig Doc. I’m looking at building a new rig. Taking your advice into consideration. Would you recommend using a Warick V16 as a power supply? I can’t find if it’s the type you recommend to eliminate low noise. Also looking at getting one of your vertex boost pedals as a boost/buffer. Is there one you would recommend over the other?

I built my rig based on your early video designed around a Boss MS3. I built the DIY buffer based on the bill of materials, switched to the CIOCKS power. I send one side out to an IK multimedia interface and run presets from the iPad via midi, and can go out the other side buffer to an amp. The crown jewel is the new UP mkII.

Thanks for the great video(s). I've bought into the soldered cables koolaid (!) and I'm redoing my board with Square Plugs and Best-tronics CA-0678 wire. One tip (and maybe you've covered this on your patch cable vids) that works for me is to take into consideration the direction of the plugs; both up, one up-one-down, etc... The CA-0678 wire doesn't twist much so the plug orientation is important for the supplies I'm using, particularly on short patch cables. Again, thank you for the information and videos!

I don't understand how people use multiple drive pedals/stack them. How do you balance out the outputs so one pedal is not to loud or quiet by itself? I have fiddled with it and always run into that problem or have to hit 2 pedals to go from clean to drive tones. A drive stack video would be great!!!!
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 жыл бұрын
If you're soloing, staying at unity won't be very helpful, also in a track the difference of 3-4dB isn't that noticeable with a full mix, just like you have to make a gain way more saturated to sound like it has any noticeable gain in a track. Of course you can also use a volume pedal too as a pad if you need it.
@vinicioserafini5929
@vinicioserafini5929 3 жыл бұрын
I always run my TS808 at really low gain last in the drive chain and that evens out a lot of the volume and gives all the drives a basic tone structure. Then I run my JHS Charlie brown still at very low gain when I need a crunch tone, a Havalina fuzz for fuzzy tones and the Charlie boosted with an Archer in front for leads. Believe it or not, if you keep the gain down on each stage, you can improve your rig's efficiency a lot and it helps even if you have to play each time through different backline amps because the 808 is acting as your drive section's master volume. Also, this way I'm able to control my Archer's huge huge volume range a lot better than running it on its own.

Man the SSS is so sick. I need to look at more in depth videos on it but it sounds so good. Im indifferent on the dumble overdrive tones but the clean tone is amazing. I'm curious about the board you built around the HX Effects compared to this. Is this a replacement or just simpler. I'm going to use the rest of my Covid break to make a nice board and I have the HX Effects but I haven't decided whether to do something like that or something like this. Either way I plan to use the SSS. I thought I was done with my pedal phase SSS is the first new pedal I've ordered in quite a while but it got to me.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 жыл бұрын
I was building that board more because we were being asked about how to integrate it so I thought we'd make one showing it with external pedals and a controller. I gave the board away after the build. I would suggest if you go that route you go with the Voodoo Lab Hex. I think the buffers are important to have and the Line 6 will color the tone some if you don't have them in place. So glad you dig the SSS! Can't wait to see your rig with it on there!

Hi Mason, love your channel! will you use the pedalboard in stereo by placing the cab m before the collider, the collider would sound way better, no? An high quality direct box after the collider would assure you a balanced signal. What do you think? Thanks, Daniel
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It's still in mono through the Cab M, it's split in the interface/buffer so it's just two mono signals, one goes to the amp, one goes to the Cab M. I don't usually use them both, just one or the other - but I could use both if I wanted. I don't think it sounds better and I couldn't use it with my amp side if I did that. If you wanted to run the Collider in post, you'd be better off using the line output and feed it into something like the Cab Zeus to feed another channel on your mixer and use it more like a wet/dry type thing, or wet/dry/wet if you used it in stereo and it already has it's own parallel mixer and goes 100% wet/kill dry.

Hey Mason, recently purchased one of your pedalboards through Sweetwater, very cool getting your products available through them. Question about the riser screws, is there a thumbscrew available from you, or some kind of quick-latch device to put there instead of regular screws? I like to have it fastened because I like to pick the whole board up by the shelf, but I also need to access underneath at gigs without having to use a screwdriver. I'm sure I could find thumbscrews somewhere, but maybe you already have something for that? If not, maybe a good idea.. what size are those threads? Thanks man.

Typically I never leave in the front screws and just adjust the hex screw in the back to the tention I want to lift the board up/down. Otherwise any 10/32 thumb screw would work and you can get them a most hardware stores or even Amazon.

Still, if you need to switch a couple of pedals on and maybe one off for a quick change of tone and maybe you need to do it while singing, you need a switcher. I get the small board factor and I love your works, but in some contexts, a switcher is just the only way to go. I am a singer/lead-guitarist, I mostly play 2h or more gigs with 7/8 different sounds and being able to do the one stomp trick is crucial.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 жыл бұрын
Somehow people made music for decades without switchers - but I agree with you, they can be handy. I think there is a place for them, and I own them myself, but for what I do most of, I don't need any programming and most of us guitar players don't typically if we're honest with ourselves. Thanks for watching and for sharing your perspective.

Mason...just an observation, but I dont see a compressor on your board? I know in your signal chain video you have a compressor before any dirt pedals as well as a boost after them. I know those were "guidelines." Is this just your personal preference? Thanks!
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 2 жыл бұрын
I like clean boosts after drives so it boost only, doesn't add gain. Compressors, if it's a studio compress, after drives is OK because in the studio compressors are after the mic normally. For guitar based compressors like an Orange Squeezer or Dyna Comp, those go up front.

Mason, I’m trying to pick a small pedalboard and looking at your travel model similar to yours. My question: Have you considered different height risers? I don’t feel I need the height and want to cut down on the bulkiness as much as possible. Maybe it’s not as tall as it looks. So what would the total height be from the floor to the top of a pedal on the top? Say the Sss Srv which I have and love btw.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 2 жыл бұрын
Height is 3" and is set by the height of pedals with the knobs to clear the riser. Going lower you will run into issues with a lot of pedals that aren't in a standard Hammond 1590 box.

Great pedalboard Mason, awesome sounds. Can you compare the sound of the collider and the h9 for reverb and delays? What is your opinion? Thanks in advance for your fantastic job! Marcello
@VertexEffectsInc

I prefer the Collider because you can run two effects at once and the H9 is only a single effect. The H9 also only sounds good to me in an effects loop and not ideal for in front of the amp. The Belden 8412 is a great input cable, not a great patch cable. I don’t recommend using it on a pedalboard. Mogami is my preferred cable for in between pedals.

Hey there! The end of the chain, you split the signal to either be able to go into an amp or use the CAB M. What do I need to split a signal from the last pedal? Is it just a one in two out box and then one out goes to the cab M and one would go to the amp? That way you have two OUT choices?

@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 жыл бұрын
Alan, my pleasure. The Boss buffers just aren't comparable to the quality of buffers we can make now. They've remained relatively unchanged for about 30 years. They weren't designed to address today's pedal applications and are poor line drivers, have a lot of color, add noise, and attenuate your output for each series of Boss buffers you run through (almost every pedal of theirs has at least two buffers in series - a JFET input and BJT output).

No FX loop, do you have a strong opinion about using FX loops for delay/modulation? Also, I struggle with buffers up front with certain fuzz pedals, like the Fulltone Octafuzz, which does not like buffers in front of it. What do you recommend there? Thanks
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the amp and if the amp is creating the distortion or the pedals. If it's the amp, then the FX loop is critical. If the pedals are producing the gain, then it doesn't matter regarding the FX loop. If you have impedance sensitive pedals like the, the input buffer should come after the fuzzes.
