As a proud owner of your 7/8 Pierre Lomont, can I just say it has the sweetest sound, an absolute joy to play. Yes I sound like a cat below the frog in bow swing, but even a Noob gets the richest sweet sound mid bow. My online Polish teacher, who's a soloist, is incredibly impressed. She says it doesn't sound like a beginner violin. So glad you suggested this one. My teacher says, I completed 12 lessons in my first half hour. I reckon that would have been impossible without this violin. Oh and Olaf, she is not laughing about my goal piece!!!

@@bungyplumb8865 ROFL. As a child, yes but in voice, clarinet and saxophone. All I wanted to do was play the violin, but I have miniature hands, my mother said no..... Inevitably I gave up music. Now its 40-50 years later. Doctor said take up an instrument.....

As an adult learner (been playing guitar and bass for 16 years, but just picked up a violin relatively recently), I opted for geared pegs with no fine tuners. I snapped three E strings in two days trying to use old-fashioned pegs. 😂😂 I REALLY tried, but I'm nearly 40, and learning the "touch" to tune with friction pegs was just too much stress for me. With the geared pegs I can tune with zero stress, and it feels the same as my other instruments. It was worth the cost!

@@yew2oob954 I did! It's absolutely wonderful. My violin tutor even said that she *never* wants to keep playing a violin other than hers, but she absolutely loved the tone and clarity of it.

congratz Olaf! I think you should have a trained practicing violinist to test out and sound your violins. Bring Ray Chen to your shop and have him play your instruments, surely it will compliment them!

Olaf, I just purchased one ($1,200 USD). I've been watching you for a bit. I did not know that you sold violins like the price and quality you shared here. Wish I'd known that. Anyway, I always enjoy watching and learning from you. I have my 2nd Lesson tomorrow. Also, hopefully going to meet up with a Orchestra Dir. from a private school here in Guam willing to meet with me and offer tips and advice. She cannot take another student currently. The one place willing to take me is quite high for my budget. So I signed up for 3, 1hr. classes. Online instructions are just not enough for me being extremely inexperienced with violins as well as up in years (58). Guam to my knowledge, has no one to repair and maintain violins. Maybe when I meet this lady from the Private School she will inform me on who or where the violin community goes for repairs.

Just admiring your craftsmanship! I'm an older guitar player and you're absolutely correct about set-up! I had to learn how to do it as almost every guitar is less than optimal and it makes all the difference when In playability. A fellow Australian is the greatest guitar player alive: Tommy Emmanuel - give him a listen if you're not familiar.

Different countries operate their own postal service to Antarctica. The largest and easiest to use is the USA's USAP/USPS. Almost no service when the continent is shut down for the winter. If I recall, Australia and New Zealand have postal service to their respective areas on the continent. If I'm not mistaken a large percentage of civilian researcher/scientist traffic is through staging in NZ so they carry a lot of post. Surprisingly, there are a lot of musical instruments on the continent at any given time. I suspect it keeps those personnel sane(r).

Shaping the fingerboard has to be one of the most under-discussed skills of the master violinmaker. I hope you go into it in some more detail in a future video.

Honestly, I was just looking on you web page if you ship worldwide. But how long would it take to arrive in Europe. And then I also think. If I am going to spend 1200 euro I should really support local store. But it is lovely to watch you set it up. And to also get the idea of what to look out for when going to a local luthier.

Hi Olaf, Very nice looking instrument, seems really well made (there are sometimes suprises with chinese productions :D ). As a detail : As a french it's a little bit strange to read "Piere Lomont" with one r instead of two in the firstname Pierre : "Pierre Lomont". It sounds like a french name but in french, the firstname Pierre (Peter in english) takes two "r" : and you have written Pierre with two r on your shop in the product title ! Thanks for your videos !

Have u seen recent studies on why Stradivarius violins sound so good? Something about how the wood was pretreated to prevent pests eating or boring into the wood.

hi im not a player but find your channel different. just wondering if the head part near the pegs has any sound value ? or could they be customized with like a lions head, or dragon? ect...

Yes! So the weight of the scroll has an effect on the sound, but people have carved lions heads and faces onto the scroll area... I guess makers could go way out with what they carve onto the head of the violin 😀 A dragon sounds pretty cool

Forgive me Olaf, please allow me to ask for some clarification. Perhaps I have a poor understanding of ebony. I noted when you were plaining the fingerboard that the substrate was much lighter in color. Is the fingerboard ebony, or have you used an alternative hard wood?

It's ebony. Ebony is not always black and the wood around the edges can be quite light. They try and use as much of the tree as possible not to waste too much timber, so there can be a discolouration.

@@AskOlaftheViolinmaker Thank you Maestro! I pay close attention to your lessons, and I recalled the much lighter color when you corrected the fingerboard on the inexpensive violin. Using your lessons I also trimmed, seated, and thinned a Cecilio bridge, fitted the pegs with reamer and peg paste, and provided it with Ascente strings. I've been enjoying it a great deal. I also have an entry level Gliga, but perhaps because I improved it, I feel drawn to the Cecilio. My daughter tried to bring you my greetings and to bring home some strings, but sadly was told your appointments are 6 to 8 weeks out. I would have combined the cost of the Cecilio and Gliga for a Vivace, but sadly they don't ship to the USA. Perhaps in a few years I will need a Piere Lomont. May I respectfully suggest that for your fans elsewhere in the world you consider selling the Vivace and Garibaldi violins and charging us the shipping? Or, perhaps, find a trustworthy distributor in the US and elsewhere to market your entry level violins. Thank you for all you do for us!

I'm no Olaf but I'm guessing it's because there are actual dimensions published from "famous" violin bridges so some just copy those regardless of how it should actually function on a violin.

Thanks for the reply, My violin's bridge is 1.2mm wide along the top edge, although I've seen a friend whose violin bridge was much thicker at 2mm wide at the top. Both have feet that are 5mm thick. So many questions... Maybe thinner bridges are better for fiddles and double stops? Maybe thicker for violins? Maybe thinner bridges might sound better but aren't good for beginners because they can warp much faster? Very curious to know more. @@Deluge4000 From what I understand the bridge transfers vibration from the string to the body of the violin. The soundpost, its position in relation to the f-holes and the distance of the bridge from the fingerboard to the tailpiece all have an effect on the sound. Thinner bridges, some believe, transfer the vibrations better but I'm guessing the thickness of the wood making the body, how the feet of the bridge curve to match the violin, and the material used to make the bridge matter a lot. I don't think there are set rules on dimensions of bridges, thinner ones may have been made that way specifically for a violin and the strings used when setting up for a specific sound. That is what they seem to do, there is a bit of artistic flair in terms of shape, but their function is sound. As long as it's not so thin that tuning the violin is bending the bridge it should be okay.

Especially the reminder that the setting up of instruments is not a generic one-size-fits-all set of ideal dimensions, but setting up can be for a specific sound, and those dimensions can be adjusted in relation to the other parts for bringing about that specific sound.

I think it partly has to do with the harness and density of the wood. Better wood can be thinned out more without causing so many problems. And then there's sound stuff. I think in right on saying that a thinner bridge will give a bit more brightness and a thicker one will give you more darkness (within limits of course). So you might vary it a bit depending on the fiddle or maybe if the player is more of a soloist or starting out.

Any thoughts on Yamaha violins? I'm a complete beginner and bought a Yamaha V10 thinking they were made in Japan. But the label inside says "made in China" and that's simply something Yamaha isn't mentioning.

No, it's made of good quality Spruce and Maple grown in the mountains of China. European wood would be a lot more expensive... It was important to me to make a great quality instrument at a more reasonable price.

I'm just curious also if you spoke German to him growing up so he learned it? A quick question regarding pegs since you mentioned that the pegs your son did are awesome. What are considered "good pegs"? I'm not sure whether it's my problem or not but the peg for my A string 1. slide and can't stay in place while I was tuning, even if I push in hard while turning it; 2. if by some mysterious force it stays in place, after 2hr of practice, it went from A to A flat... I don't know whether that's a string problem, a peg problem, or purely my problem lol Any advice, anyone? Thanks in advance!

Hello! I have been a hobby violinist for 7 and a half years and I have the same problem as you but on the D string. My instrument teacher told me that in my case it depends on the shape of the peg. But he advised me to put some chalk (... the one on the blackboard to be clear) in the little hole where you put the peg: it worked and it doesn't slide anymore! I hope my teacher's advice was helpful. Sorry for my simple English and greetings (and goodnight) from Italy 🇮🇹❤

Olaf, why did you lick the feet of the bridge? Does that help you to trim them to match the curvature of the top plate? What oil do you use to oil the bridge? I eagerly await my Piere Lomont Master violin, which will arrived only when it is ready. I wait with baited breath like a cat who eats cheese (Dad joke).

Your work in properly sourcing is so important along with your work in instrument setup. "Made in China" is not synonymous with a badly made poor instrument. It can be put two ways. Firstly, there is no reason that Chinese workers cannot create quality instruments when given the chance. They're human beings so dump the prejudice. Secondly, there are traditions of incredible craftsmanship (by men and women) going back hundreds, and thousands of years in China. China has an incredible depth of culture that shouldn't be judged prejudicially because people want to buy super (ridiculously) cheap junk.

Why are the fingerboards not planed in the factory? I can understand that the pegs and bridge must be fitted to the violin as part of the set up, but it seems odd to me that the fingerboard would not be done at the factory level.

I have a carbon fiber Violin that sounds just as good as any wood one and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper and durable. End it even floats!

My son's violin teacher, a beauttful Ukranian /Russian likes his Gliga from Roumania. Carpathian spruce, Maple body, Rosewoo pegs and ebony tailpiece and neck. How would that compare to a Chinese Pierre Lomont? See Violinlover that shows the bildind, then it goes to the US for set up. Suck on that Olaf.

Cheap tailpiece sets are not worth using at and these aren't very beautiful at all. I make mine insanely beautiful and secrets of setup make using great wood with smoothness not by foreign substances

You did that job to the cheap violin 2set brought you have you tried in all the years you've been a luthier shaped the sound bar to normal and from centre of it going drill holes big in middle going left and right in ascending order with smaller holes then get some nice easy planning wood which gives you good plane chips which turn into a wood funnel and glue them inside like cones with big opening facing side walls, and small hole facing f holes and put another reversed to it so sound goes in big hole out small hole straight into small hole going out to big hole by wall thought that would give it more of a sound boost like a megaphone.first would that work if the wood funnels were all thru the inside to give it more depth. wot do you reckon olaf sounds daft but it mini megaphones so I reckon it might.
