This week I thought we would take a look at my Pile of Shame! Because it's quite the hoard. XD
I also wanted to talk a bit about my very first army in Warhammer 40k, the Crimson Fists. My current army, the Death Guard. And then give you guys a peak into one of the reasons this channel got started!
So join me as I look at all the various un-painted grey plastic miniatures I've collected over the 10+ years I've been in this hobby.

I also recently discovered Rangers of Shadowdeep and I think many of the Forsaken will find new life as part of that game. Sometimes you have to get creative and find new motivation to tackle that pile of shame. Keep up the great work! 🤙

Thanks! 💜 I really think 8th was jumping on point for a lot of older fans of the game that had sorta dropped out sometime between 6-7th. And on top of that, the new Death Guard minis looked a super fun to paint and run and that got people extra excited! All I know is it's nice to see the hobby and tabletop gaming flourishing right now! : )

Truth be told, if someone has the funds available, it's nearly impossible to avoid buying a ton of stuff to stock up. Building armies and lists is just intrinsically fascinating, and here's the thing about a big "pile of shame": if you suddenly have the urge to build and paint a specific model, well shit, you got it. Just pull the box off the shelf and go. It's not that I would recommend everyone do this; obviously, people should not hurt themselves by being financially irresponsible. And also, a big factor is interest: it could be a very bad idea to buy more than a few models at a time if you're sufficiently into the hobby. But despite it all, the flipside is that there are people who are more than enough into the hobby that all of it won't go to waste. One useful comparison I've seen is photography. That can be a very expensive pursuit. It's easily up there with Warhammer. And in photography you'd never recommend a beginner go out and buy too many things, or too expensive equipment, at first. They don't know where the hobby is going to go for themselves. However, once someone really knows what they want, it's not wrong for them to go out and drop thousands on the right camera for their needs. An observer might think it crazy, seeing it as spending so much just to "take a picture". But the enthusiast photographer knows they're investing in ten years of photographs - not just one. And as for painting so much stuff... well, it can be daunting. For sure. And not everybody is built to really love painting. But if you do get to a point where you are truly energized by painting, once you get experience it can go shockingly fast. When I first started painting miniatures, I struggled for perhaps 3 years. I didn't have the experience yet, was torn between finishing models and learning how to paint better. Then sometime in year 4, it was like a switch being flipped. I passed a threshhold of knowledge and confidence, and started tearing through stuff.

It’s dangerous how addictive this hobby is, I’ve acclimated alot more than i can honestly can handle. So i i’ve made a hard decision, sell what i cannot realistically use (in my limited free time), only keep what i am currently using or planning on expanding on. Focus on less , be more accomplished in what i have completed. No more half painted armies. Finally downsize on size of armies, i enjoy smaller games these days 750-1k are great for a couple of hours over 4-6 over 2k + Okey thats my opinion on the matter anywho ^^.

Welp, that's a lot of minis. How many points do you have with all of it ? =P. Great video Angela. It's nice to hear about your introduction in mini painting and 40k. I'm new to the hobby myself (about a year next month). Although I know we like comically refer our unpainted models as "the pile of shame", I don't like this expression. I know painting is an important aspect of wargaming (after all, the fight against the Grey is eternal =P), but I really don't like to push myself to urgently paint my armies. I think it can kill the fun in it. I mean, I have a Custodes army since my beginning and I only paint half of it ! (I might be a slacker sometimes, but just a little...a little...). I like to think of them as "ongoing projects" =) and when people ask When will your army be done, the answer is always: when it's done. Although, I have to give you a huge credit, Angela. Watching your videos really hype me on my "ongoing projects". You have great ideas and I learn a lot of new tips on mini painting. So again, great job on your video and keep up the great work ! P.S. Where do you stock all that plastic ? I mean, all those boxes and crates ! Do you sleep on it ? If so, is it comfortable ? Asking for a friend of mine....
@HobbyNight
@HobbyNight 3 жыл бұрын
I have never pointed them all out... 😅 Maybe one day...gosh, that will be a really long day. I hear ya, I use the term for the clicks rather than because of any actual shame! I adore my collection that we've spent 20 years building. They are definitely all on-going projects. I think that in terms of getting the painting done, absolutely take it at your own pace. I have been running my Death Guard for 2-3 years now and it's still not fully painted or even built! And I know for me, part of why I do buy as many varied kits as I do is partially because if I don't give myself smaller alternative projects between my big ones, then I start to become de-motivated and eventually stop painting all together. As to where I store it... most of the boxed items are in the Kallax that is the support for our computer desks. The two active armies are on top of the Kallax along with two of the smaller army cases, and then the rest of it is in our office walk-in-closet. So it's all pretty condensed and out of the way. I would not recommend your friend sleep on them, they would break the delicate bits! XD

I would have to sit down and have a hard talk with myself. Off-load everything I know I will never paint, finish off the two armies that are started and choose one untouched army to keep and work on next. And resist the urge not to buy anything new until those first two armies were complete. Hope you find a solution that works for you.

0:45 WAIT WTF?! That's the same Chapter of Space Marines I play. What are even the odds? xD Also, that story as to how you got to playing Crimson Fists is pretty similar to my own, only this time it was because some of the guys I played with kinda made fun of me for playing Ultramarines instead. At the time, the Battleforce boxes were coming out and there was an Ultramarines and Imperial Fists box (which could be used to make Crimson Fists). Funnily enough, a few days prior, I read about the Crimson Fists in the Codex because they kinda caught my eye with their nice navy blue color. When I read that the Crimson Fists hated Orks as I did, I was basically sold. Even better, around that time, Duncan did a painting tutorial for Battle Ready Crimson Fists and I basically knew all the colors I needed to paint them. I guess I got really lucky with my timing when I entered the hobby, as there was a box set that I could use to build my Crimson Fists, and a White Dwarf magazine came out with rules for them, and a special Primaris Captain character who came with a Power Fist allowing me to bring the Fist of Vengence relic, and that painting tutorial. I guess No Matter The Odds, I was gonna end up playing these boys. ;)

CRIMSON FISTS FOR LIFE! 💙❤ They will always have a special place in my heart, and at some point when I run SM again I will likely run them as Crimson Fists just to try out their 9th ed rules a few times. I really don't think my old strategies will work modernly! 😆
@loltwest9423

@@HobbyNight ^^ Couldn't have said it better myself. Also the tactical advice I give for Crimson Fist players is as follows: As long as you have plenty of Bolters (Heavy Bolters especially) and decent melee, I think you should be just fine. If you have Dev Cents with Heavy and Hurricane Bolters, bring a squad of just 3 and no more than that. If you don't have that, then Aggressors is an excellent, if not better, substitute. The reason for me saying no more than that is because you don't want to lose friends over bringing the most busted combo in the game, cause let me tell you, Crimson Fists DEMOLISH horde armies. Additional hits on 6s with Bolt weapons and +1 to hit if outnumbered by 5+ models is stupid nasty on Aggressors, Cents, and Intercessors. I've straight up cleared 30-man Ork boy mobs with that kind of firepower (with just one unit btw) and destroyed Rhinos with just bolters. That and the +1 to hit in melee counters the -1 to hit from Power Fists. And don't forget Kantor, he's not a must take, but he can easily swing the balance of a match if enough models are in 6" of that +1 attack bubble. But really, the best units for CF is gonna be Heavy Intercessors, both variety of Centurions, Boltstorm Aggressors, and regular Intercessors.

Being new to wargaming the pile of shame is quite the enigma for me. I hardly know all the army math and how it applies to making good purchase decisions. 4 factions have struck my fancy, and so far my acquisitions are merely based off lore, and cool to me factors. So am I unknowingly creating a pile of shame or Schiet?!? 😞😨😥

Lol Yep, you probably are! In my experience the cool factor is the main reason most people pick up the factions that they do. It's how I chose mine. We're got to get you into WarMachine, so your pile of shame can grow in a whole new dimension. My painting for the weekend: A Menite Archon. I made good progress. He's a big boi and he's starting to look pretty good. Now, since I'm playing with him, I'll need a second Menite Archon and three squads of Initiates of the Order of the Wall, because that's just how Menoth is played right now. Andd so the pile of shame grows... Oh, and since I'm getting back into Menoth as a faction, might as well pick up a second Judicator. What's committing to one more Huge Base model? I'm sure it'll take no time. No growing pile here. No siree.

Aint that the way! The pile is ever growing XD I have tried a few times to get into WarMachine... Besides that I tend to lean towards larger scale/point games I have never found a faction in the game that really made me go 'man, I really want to run a list using that!' A Maybe GoB's WarMachine group will change my mind when events can occur again!

Are you sure you're not trying to start your own game store....lol, my pile of grey looks tiny by comparison. :) My problem with getting it downsized has been mental fatigue from work, I repair medical test equipment and since the start of the pandemic it's been non stop to get thing turned around quickly and it doesn't look to abate any until after the start of the new year. I will say mine has not grown much because I have been actively not buying box sets only single models for my SOBs and I did order Sgt. Jackson, she was just too good to pass up

I mean...one day. : ) I totally understand the fatigue issue. Painting while very enjoyable, is also a lot of work! No matter how much a person might enjoy it. And staring intently at a very small surface for potentially hours at a time while being creative can be extremely tiring. For me, it was all about finding a realistic pace that I could set myself to. That way I make continuous progress on the pile without it feeling impossible or fatiguing.

Angela, you are lost. The only way to redeem yourself is to do the Feast of Bones set. Just think of doing the Beastclaw Raiders in the ice tribes theme, big models great painting. Keep going it is so refreshing to see a realistic painting vid and not a golden demon wannabe. well done.

The Chaos Cultist and I were actually just talking about considering something from that set for a future video. Maybe I will put a poll up to see what people might like from it. I will include the Beastclaw Raider in the poll if I do. 😊

Damn. As a DM who paints all his NPCs I really can't grasp the sheer amount of building/painting involved in Warhammer. I get annoyed when I have to paint 9 generic brigands for my game.
@HobbyNight

It is a lot of building and painting. Especially with the amount I own....but I at least really enjoy the process, so it works for me! RPG minis would be a whole separate Pile of Shame video for me. Although not nearly as large as this one XD
