Hey Kenan, I own Rodent and pest control company in Los Angeles , been trapping raccoons for 37 years, your trap is to small, it will trap a small raccoon, but a large one will not go in it, use cat food in a can, fish flavor, the pull tab type, but don’t completely remove the top, open it just enough for the raccoon to smell it, he will work on it to get the food then trip the trap. Get a larger trap, remember, there is going to be a lot more raccoons, never just one or two

Make sure all your tortoises are protected overnight too. I’ve heard of raccoons killing torts as well, and they may be next if the raccoons realize they can’t get to the turtles anymore. They usually go around hunting for food in groups, so there may be more than one left on your property. Set multiple traps. I’m SO sorry Kenan. Best of luck to you in trapping the remaining raccoons.

Have you thought about getting an outdoor dog? A Blue-tick Coonhound should be good and can tolerate the moist weather. I had a dog that lived with my chickens/ducks, and she protected against hawks and raccoons very effectively. The howl of hounds goes quite the distance. An elderly dog with a good nose/howl will be sufficient, even if they can't catch the threat.

@@parisinthe30sx we can agree to disagree. Stealing is stealing tho in my eyes. We put time and resource towards raising birds as a hobby. We attempt to deter or relocate when we can. Hunger is an animals teacher, you ever been on the end of starvation where you goal is survival? 👀 thats how the wild animals think, they don't care you have momentary value in your pets free roaming outside, they are hungry and do what they will abd shall do for survival. I feel your pain bro. When I was a youngster, me and my dad had a turtle pond, and we had caught a bunch of turtles from a place before it got developed and their habitat was completely destroyed. Sadly though, a family of raccoons massacred like 12 turtles in a single night. My 10 year old self was in such disbelief and crying like a baby. So sorry that this happened. The worst part is, since they’ve done it once, now they won’t be able to help themselves. They’ll be back nightly.

I am a feral cat trapper. I’ve caught around 500 for spay/neuter and return. I’ve caught tons of raccoons and opossums. Use canned cat food as bait (pate and usually a fishy flavor). Also, you can use sardines in water.. the smellier the better for trapping. You don’t need to cover the trap in fronds. It’s almost easier if they can walk around the trap and smell the bait and then go around to the opening and go in. Maybe sprinkle some drops of the smelly juice around the outside of the trap to lure them in. It’s tough because the turtles and tortoises are easy prey so you need to entice them with something super smelly.

My condolences for the loss of your turtles. That is awful to see and thank you for having the courage to show the reality of being an animal guardian. A few practical tips: Get a bigger trap, have more than one and keep it away slightly from the perimeter you're trying to protect. Raccoons will always go for the easy food over the more challenging. Also, try using a motion sensored sprinkler system around the enclosure. Raccoons are flighty animals and they, like cats, don't really like getting wet. The best advice I can give you is Stop Putting things on your fence line! This is a really important one. Having plants touching your live fence will reduce the power of the fence. It doesn't matter how much power goes into the fence if there are plants earthing it. Keep your head up and please don't punish the animal for being an animal. You have options, exhaust those first before taking your anger out in the wrong way.

Hey Kenan sorry to hear about your loss. The tough thing about raccoons is that there generally is more than one. In order to your job successfully you will probably have to set multiple traps in different areas. Raccoons are very smart animals. If they see one of their friends get trapped they won’t go near that area. Also use a heavy scented wet cat food that’s not fully open so it gives the trap time to trigger while the raccoons are trying to get at the food. Hopefully this advice works and the best of luck to you!

With truly honest due respect. That is incorrect. They dont always hunt, kill, or eat out of necessity. They do kill because they can, it's there, and the temptation for a little snack is there. There has been several recent(within the last few years) studies done on this topic as well that I will happily try and look for to provide my sources as I dont remember right off the bat and It was a a couple years ago when i read about them in school) anyway, they have found that a majority of raccoons living in human populations are almost never starving and has constant access to food either directly from humans, or indirectly from humans, by being fed by, garbage cans, compost bins and piles, and live food sources of pets, livestock, crops/gardens that attract other smaller prey animals etc. so more than likely they aren't poor starving animals just desperately in need of food. Regardless, they have been many times over to also kill for the heck of it where more often than not, they dont even eat the animal they killed or they eat a small bit and leave the rest to waste. When an animal eats out of necessity, they will either eat the entire animal, or if too much to eat in one sitting, they will take the carcass, or bury it to save and est for later. Given that there were several raccoons here, and all had just legs eaten/torn off, it is more likely they were not at all killing out of necessity. With that, it is still animals doing what they are programmed to do, which is understandable. But just like they have every right to do what they are naturally programmed to do, we have the right to stop them from doing their thing on our property. In nature, animals have territory, dens, young, food source, etc that they will kill to protect. There is no reason we cannot do the same. We are not some random aliens that showed up out of nowhere taking over animals home. We were here along with them and we too are a part of nature just the same. I already left a similar comment above and would like to apologize again for my English and grammar. I am working on it and hope I was able to make some sense of my rambling.lol I should add that when i say animals will kill to protect their territory etc. I am NOT advocating for him or anyone to kill any animals that come onto your property. Especially when there are other options such as catch and relocate etc. But, there are instances where sometimes its necessary or the only best option.
