Hi I’m 55 years old I’ve been riding since 1976 all styles of skate. A couple things, first you’re bearing problem, try swiss bones or the ceramic bearings I have had no need to upgrade from the Swiss bones you will never have a bearing blowout again trust me they’re worth the money. Next they do make half inch and three-quarter inch risers or you can just stack your risers it actually gives you the ability to turn much better you may wish to make your own risers out of wood sometimes I’ll do it out of old skateboards then I can glue to my exact height then shape. Next the cracking problem in your deck generally that’s caused from one or two things, seven ply and/or new growth wood that means a wide grain in the wood. Old growth wood is a real tight pattern you must look at the grain to check it. Try going to an eight ply I would avoid re-issues and go to high-quality deck companies when I was using re-issues they crack really easy mine were being made with a lower quality wood (not the old growth wood). There are some custom companies that will add a ply to your deck. And remember anytime you have the extra holes drilled that is where my boards always broken half at avoid extra drill holes.

Hey Pat, thanks for the helpful comment. The deck and ply comment is great. I've looked at Life skateboards with the 8 ply construction just for that reason, but my Black Label Lucero decks have been performing so I haven't made another purchase on this yet. The crack on this board came about 9 months into riding that deck, so that's probably not too bad I would guess. On the bearings, I just haven't wanted to drop the money on a single set when I replace them 10x with cheaper bearings before I meet that cost investment. And while doing that, I found a set of Dragon bearings that have the spacer and the washer built in to the bearing housing. I just keep those lubed and they seem to be rock solid. I'm honestly a little shocked, but they've held up a good or better than any of the others so far, and they're $18. So the Swiss are a "some day, maybe" type of thing for me but appreciate the thoughts. But you've been riding since 1976, that's awesome man! I wish I had started as a kid, but happy I found it eventually. If you have any clips to share, I'd love to see them!

Great video, and always fun finding out what others skate and why. I have a Black Label 'Auby Taylor' (9.25 i think) deck set up with 169s and 56mm 97a Slime Balls. I also have a similarly sized, Madness shaped deck that comes with wheel wells, which is a bonus. I tried 9.0 popsicles but feel far more comfortable on shaped decks too. I'm 60 and a late starter, and your videos are great for inspiration! Keep it up!

So glad I found your channel here, just what I had been looking for for ages it seems. Am where you were with the "regular" skateboard and just wanted to order a wider board for pool and transition (my body won't be able to handle streetskating at my age and lack of experience) and have been struggling to find legit info, esp.on trucks. Also have a strong snowboard background and thus love a longer wheelbase and wider plank under my size 12 feet, just feels way more familiar and secure :) Really appreciate your content, thanks!!

For the bearings you might want to add spacer in the wheel between the two bearings, and when you go to put the wheels back on tighten the nut and stop when the wheels have no play. I know people say your wheels should have a little bit of movement but if you use speed washers it will be fine and your bearings should last much longer and it's not being exposed to as much torsion
@ElderSkates
@ElderSkates 3 жыл бұрын
I have run speed washers / spacers on all my boards except my first one. The variance in the actual wheel depth/core is too great a tolerance for them to always allow for full tightening. Sometimes it works and the spacer hits the bearing before the urethane hits, but not always. Also, the spacer isn't a part of the bearing, so that disconnect allows for the flexibility at the joint when torqued. I'm actually going to test Oust bearings designed for transition skating and see if they hold up better, and will share my experience. But if you have other ideas, I'm all ears! Appreciate the comment!

As for bearings, have you looked into Quantum Bearing Science™ ? It’s run by two skateboarding molecular physicists. I’ve no idea whether or not they’re stronger side-to-side (torsion), but they sell ceramics for about $45 and can tell you the exact molecular structure of their two types of ceramics. They reply to email quickly. That’s what I’m going to try on my next build.

Spacers and a lightly hand tight snug wheel nut (5NM toque is perfect). Your bearings should last years, even a decade. If you're having problems with spacer fit try the following. Wipe some oil in the bearing seats with your finger to help seat them fully. A speed washer or thinner equivalent shim inside the wheel can help. Sometimes new wheels need a few skates to help compress the bearing seats to make the spacer / tight wheel nut thing work. I run tight wheel nuts on all my boards, they work perfectly, bearings least forever, wheels don't cone at all. Just as fast, if not faster because the bearings stay in good condition. If you have it right, the wheel will spin very free at low speeds, with little resistance at all even with a tight wheel nut.

Aluminium 10mm spacers like bones / Modus are good, made way more precise. The cheap steal ones are junk as they're usually don't have perfectly straight edges. Got to have good quality wheels too like Bones / Powell / Santa Cruz. Not sure on spitfire and spacers. I've heard the tolerance isn't great on them. It's not easy to get right but when you do it's very worth it!

i just started bowl skating @ 46and can confirm the popsicle type board 8.25” with the 54mm’s really does feel like a toy. I’m 5’8” 195 lbs and also have the bigger board with bigger wheels and im a lot more stable on my 10” board with larger wheels. I skated a mini bowl to tonight with a new popsicle setup with 54 mm hard spitfire wheels. Def felt more unstable a couple of times my front foot crept over the bolts and that causes me to fall off forward a couple of times … anyway i now have 3 total setups lol but i’m hopeful the two 10” setups with the wider wheelbase and larger wheels i have on my two 10” will work better as i all am looking to do is whip around the bowl and surf skate. thanks for the video it’s very helpful. My setups Smaller to larger : Board #1 : 8.25 Powel popsicle toy machine indi trucks 8” aluminum trucks 54mm spitfire narrow cut. no riser not super stable but in a way it’s helping me gain balance because when i switch to the larger boards i feel like i’ve leveled up … so im def gonna keep using it. Board #2: blank 10” old school shovel shape stage two black indie trucks 9.125 swapped out hard bones bushings Wheels are 64mm G bones 97a (same as in video) 1/4” riser I added extra holes to extend the wheelbase by 3/4” Very stable ! Board #3 Largest 10 “ omen i looks bery similar to your Lucero deck and has wheel wells pre carved This has softer 64mm longboard cruiser wheels unknown hardness but i’d say they are on the softer side 1/4 riser pads extra holes for wider wheelbase THIS SETUP IS BY FAR THE MOST STABLE. Wheelbase is 15 inches. I usually buy decks that are double drilled and use the widest. Personally I find truck width important. I rode Indy 159's for a long time but switched up to 169's last summer. I like the stability. My deck right now is 8.75 so 169 would be considered wide but I have no issues. Curious what 215's are like though.

Ha! Good video. I had a very similar experience a couple years back, when decided to start going to my local skate park around the age of 50. Started with a narrow pop shape, 14 .4 wheelbase, and 54mm wheels. Almost immediately realized I had the wrong board though, because I had done plenty of flat ground, and a bit of quarter pipe skating in the mid-80's. Love your setup! I'm riding 9.5" and 10" decks, with 60mm wheels currently, and I seem to do best with a wheelbase around 15.5. Sounds like your having a lot of fun in the bowl if your blowing out bearings like that! You might do well with an H-street Marty Grimes Park & Pool deck. Cheers.

I think Prodigal Suns or Jon Bishop's channel may be of help on bowl set ups. Me being 215lbs but much shorter I've found Khiro cushions that are 94 duro or higher are more rigid than even the Bones hardcore bushings. I know Indy makes 94A to 98A cushions but they are hard to find in the local shop. I would say give those a try to see how they feel or if they will last. Lastly Thanks for this super helpful and detailed review. I gotta look into those tailbones.

Hey Dean, thanks for the feedback man! I've tried a few other versions of my setup since this video last year and I've made a few minor adjustments, but overall its not enough to warrant another video. I did switch to 60mm Bones SPF 81a wheels after trying out some other diameters and durometers and right now those are my favorite (and they get rid of wheel bite!). And I actually got some of my original advice on pool setups from Prodigal Suns. His setups were so different from the standard park setup the kids use, I thought I'd try it out and it was awesome. I've just tweaked it to my personal preferences, that's all.

I can’t speak for elder skates, but for me I feel like wheels that are around 97a offer a good combination of sliding and gripping for most concrete parks. I know some of the younger dudes like harder wheels, but I just don’t like the way harder wheels feel.
@ElderSkates
@ElderSkates 3 жыл бұрын
I like the 97a wheels also. They offer a lot of grip yet are still hard enough to be fast. I recently started skating the 81b and 84b durometer wheels, and while I like them a lot for smooth concrete, they are really bad if the surface is older and rough. They're too hard for anything but smooth parks. I've seen a few people riding soft wheels like the 78a you mention. Those don't slide at all, so you can't correct your turn if you don't have the right speed on the carve, so no room for error as you start getting higher and faster.

I’ve been looking at getting the Lucero Cross to use with my Carver CX trucks for a bow setup. I like that this has the 15.5 and 16” wheelbase since I am 5’10. My only concern is accidentally going to far on that nose and tipping over or putting in to much force in front of the truck and getting mad wheel bite with the CX. I would really appreciate your thoughts/opinions on this
@ElderSkates
@ElderSkates 2 жыл бұрын
Zach, I don't have a lot of experience on Carver trucks, I've only ridden them once, but they seemed to carve/turn with out a ton of deck angle, meaning they don't seem to get wheel bite the same way regular trucks do and you can run larger wheels before getting wheel bite then you generally would. I can say that for my setup I run 169 Indy with 60mm wheels and 3/8" riser. This keeps me out of wheel bite. As far as the nose concern goes, it doesn't get much longer than 16" unless you get into long boards (I have a friend that rides 17" but he gets some unique and custom decks) . I'll say that for carving around the bowl 16" is a good width for me to keep my feet about shoulder width apart and I'm 6'2". I rode a 14" wheel base when I started learning and I fell over the nose constantly when placing my feet past the bolts, and that just happened naturally based on my height and feeling of what was comfortable. The 16" fixed that completely. Hope that helps. Best of luck!

It's the only one I found at the time, Powell tail block. And it actually fits the shape of the tail in this board really well. I don't even trim it down, I just use it as is! I absolutely love the shape of this deck. I have 5 of them now ;)

@@ElderSkates Thank you so much for the info. Incidentally, I just now had a chance to dig a little deeper into your channel. You just got yourself another subscriber. 😉 Good stuff. I’m on a similar path with skating. I’m a middle-aged surfer who has recently gotten into bowl/pool skating as a form of training as well as an additional source of that zen, flowing, surf experience that I so love. I’ll be checking out more of your videos and may very well be hitting you up with questions as they arise. Keep up the great work. Thanks so much 🙏🤙🏼

@@jvz773 really appreciate the sentiment. I really just started filming myself to see how I progressed. Slowly, people started watching it, and I learned how open and supportive this community is. It's been an awesome journey, and happy to answer anything...if I know anything about it ;) I met a few older guys that picked up skating late but had surfing backgrounds. They all rip, so you're in good company!

Have you tried Oust bearings? The ones they make specifically for street may theoretically handle that load better in the same way it's designed to handle the load of doing tricks like bluntslides. I personally don't know what design changes they've actually made though, just thought it may be the one brand you haven't gone for because they're a bit obscure
@ElderSkates
@ElderSkates 3 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate the comment/thought. I actually looked into those a while back. They do seem to be the only design that speaks to the torsional loads that skating requires. From memory, I believe they upgraded the design of the cage that holds the bearings and they also have a groove to help hold them in place, but I can't remember the details. Currently I'm replacing a bearing on average of every other session, and I only have one backup left as of today, so time to order some new ones. I think it's time to try out the Oust. Do you ride them at all? Any personal experience?

RE: blown out bearings: have you tried using bearing spacers in the wheels?
@ElderSkates
@ElderSkates 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, I've always used spacers. Since I haven't ridden with out them I don't have a comparison. But over the past year I haven't had the same issue any more. I think my balance has improved slightly and I no longer press on the edge so hard. So I haven't blown out a bearing in a long time now. I also split time between a few decks, and the one I spend the most time on has bearings with spacers built in as part of the bearing itself. And those have been really solid for me! Fireballs

Do you find the tail bones make it harder for the tail to lock in for the drop in ?
@ElderSkates
@ElderSkates 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, and I feel I should explain this on a video. The tail bone actually gives me more stability and it also levels the board out better on the pool coping so the nose isn't so high. The only time it works against me is on a section of coping where there's a steal plate that connects to the coping and runs about 6 inches back. That area is slick, but that's an unusual condition.

Might want to try half inch riser pads ( urethane ones not hard plastic) which would sort out the wheel bite and also allow for some cushioning to the deck to prevent the the cracks.

How did you make your wheel wells?
@ElderSkates
@ElderSkates 3 жыл бұрын
I used the wheel bite marks to identify the area to grind, and then just used a dremmel with a sanding wheel. Since I only ground the area the wheel actually hits, I can grind deep but leave the material around it, so it stays strong and doesn't make a weak point in the board.

If you're after a 9"+ deck try heroin skateboards us British love a big board heroin do a lot of big deck the symmetrical one's.are the dogs dangly's I've the 9.5" symmetrical razor egg with ace Af1 66s Bronson G3 bearings in 58mm spitfire formula fours . Best set up I've had it feels super safe because of it grips when needed and the board being so wide it feels like ya can run around on it. Shred on people 🤙😊

Are you sure they're lighter? I don't think they are much lighter at all. I also don't think there is much if any real titanium in them.. At least that's what I've heard. IDK I like that label👍😁
@ElderSkates
@ElderSkates 3 жыл бұрын
You're right in that they aren't much lighter, only 13%. 411g vs 357 for the 169 size. And the titanium is only in the axle. It appears the king pin on both is grade 8 chromoly steel, and they both have aluminum base plates. But the base plate on the titaniums is definitely thinner so it might be a higher grade aluminum, but i can't find the specs to confirm. So it's only a 2oz weight savings but it feels lighter when I pickup the board... Here's a review on them. This guy loves them. www.google.com/amp/s/www.skatedeluxe.com/blog/en/skate-test-independent-stage-11-standard-forged-titanium-trucks/amp/

I've had a chance to ride the 215s a couple times. Not enough to really know what I'm talking about probably, but I felt like the geometry just carved differently. I actually like the Ace AF1 77 with hard bushings the best right now. They're a little wider than the 169s but smaller than the 215s, and the geometry makes for amazing carves
