I've been taking Zoloft (Sertraline) 75mg every night for the last 1.5 years, and it's changed my life. In today's video i'll go over the ways it has helped, some of the negative side effects I've experienced, as well as what my plans are in terms of continuing to take Zoloft going forward. Mental Health Awareness is so important and something I'm passionate about. I've been able to talk to so many of you about your own experiences with anxiety and depression through sharing my journey, and I hope this video leaves you feeling like there are answers for your mental health out there, even if they aren't taking a medication like Zoloft (sertraline).

As Covid Vaccine mandates become more popular, I have a few thoughts as to what is ethically the right move here. Covid vaccination decreases spread of illness, and will decrease likelihood of transmission to patients. However the vaccine mandate may cause more nurses to leave already short staffed units, making working conditions more unsafe. And costing more lives in the end.

I was prescribed Zoloft over a year ago and it has just been sitting in my medicine cabinet ever since. I absolutely refused to take it cause I was so scared (still kind of am) but my depression and anxiety has gotten worse and I’m just at my last resort. Today I took my first pill because of your videos. I want change. I NEED change. I want my life back, I’m so tired of laying in bed, not taking care of myself. I’m hope this works for me 😩

Before Zoloft I was in a dark place and felt disconnected from myself. Zoloft saved my life. I’ve been taking it for about 3 and a half months and almost feel like myself again. Currently taking the smallest dose 25mg and plan on taking this for a while. I feel like the 2020 pandemic hurt a lot of peoples mental health cause of losing close ones due to Covid, losing jobs, being stuck inside at home with our own thoughts has increased anxiety and depression.

@@Ryancampbellsings Been on Zoloft 25mg for almost a year now. Have to say it definitely helped with my anxiety and depression. It took about 3 months to fully see the positive results. Definitely put in the work too and don’t only rely on the medication. It doesn’t work right away and you’ll most likely feel side effects for a bit but that means your body is adjusting to the medication. Be patient and enjoy the ride is my biggest advice. Working as an RN in hospitals for many years, I thought the horrific conditions that I endured were unique to my area but after watching your videos, it seems to be a very wide spread problem. I have severe anxiety and panic attacks associated with my old I believe depression and went on Zoloft when I was 19 and it worked wonders for me but then went off and on it a couple times feeling like it didn't work but I wasn't on it long enough. I just went back on it about 5 days ago and my symptoms are worse but I know how the transition. Works and I'm just curious if it still working for you

I did the mistake of coming off zoloft abruptly after one year thinking i was fixed and everything was fine. And it was a little while after. But I eventually went back into my old habits and 2 years later my anxiety is at an all time high. I’ve been depressed basically all my life and thought that short time of goodness solved everything LOL I’m grateful for your informative video. Really helped my perspective on being on medication. I’ve always been hesitant on relying on it to feel good but truthfully if i’m also doing other work to improve my life and anxiety, it’s worth it.

I developed anxiety in 2017 and have been messed up daily until my GI doctor...yes 'GI' doctor prescribed me amitriptyline for gi issues. Yes, it works for gi issues too. It seems that since taking it I'm not as anxious but more irritated LOL! But I'd rather be irritated than have anxiety anyday. Liz, thank you for not being afraid to show that health professionals have many of the mental and health issues as other people. But the key to health success is to do something about it, seek medial advice and not be ashamed of your issues. Thank you my fellow NP 😄

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'm also a healthcare worker. I've just started working as a doctor at a hospital for the first time, and I realise that I need to finally focus on my anxiety. I've been anxious for as long as I can remember, and I've been thinking about trying out an SSRI for a long time, but then I've felt better and thought the same things you did: "It's not that bad. I'm fine now". But the stress of starting this job has shown me that I need to take action. I barely function at home, I'm mentally at the hospital all the time. I'm just waiting for a breakdown at work, and I almost throw up every morning. There's probably a strong genetic influence in my anxiety. My grandmother, mother and aunts are also super anxious, but they've dealt with it the old fashioned way - avoidance through their whole lives. My sister has just started seeing a therapist, as she also started throwing up every morning before work last year. We are a nervous group of people... I could prescribe an SSRI to myself and start today, but I'm seeing my GP on Monday, as I'd like to talk to someone about this and get some feedback from another healthcare practitioner and be put in contact with a therapist. Thank you again - I wonder if I too could get a life-changing experience on medication. PS: Sorry for any spelling mistakes, I'm Norwegian:)

I take Zoloft too and learned to force myself to quit working sometimes (even jobs I loved) when I notice symptoms like frequent waking in the night it not sleeping due to work. OCD causes me to overwhelm myself with fixing everything at work (to help clients in their lives while neglecting my own needs). Also having my own business with employees was too much responsibility for me to handle. I would never do it again, especially any time you have young children at home. I learned my body's stress limits the hard way and always stop myself now because I know my personal limits. There are some benefits like that to getting older. I know myself so much better and don't feel guilty for my shortcomings. Everyone is different so we can't compare ourselves to other people. At age 50 now life is fabulous.

I am so glad this medication has worked for you. I took it for 10 months while going through a very vigorous language program, due to having severe anxiety in life as well as during my tests. I was ONE C+ from being kicked from the class, began Sertraline, and immediately started getting As. I had previously been COMPLETELY paralyzed with anxiety during my tests and studies, and it was miserable. The sertraline did the trick, but the negative effects were far worse than the positives. I am not going to go into the details of that, but basically I was a zombie and didn't even realize it. I had no feelings, whatsoever, and that along with the other side effects I was having, did not feel worth it to me. I told my Psychiatrist I would like to get off of it, and this Army doctor who shall not be named, told me to quit cold turkey. From 150 mg to 0 mg in one day, and I was an absolute MESS, nearly wanting to unalive myself, bawling my eyes out and having feelings I had NEVER had before. I ended up just waiting it out a few days, but they were the toughest days of my life. I will never go on sertraline again. Not to mention, this was the first medication I had ever taken for anxiety. Not a good look for that doctor. She should have definitely started me lower.

Great video! As a healthcare professional myself - prescribing, psychiatric, mental-health medication for over 30 years - I have a comment. It is a common misconception to think of Zoloft as a source of artificial or “store-bought” serotonin. However, Zoloft’s mechanism of action, as a SSRI - it that it slows down (inhibits) the reabsorption (reuptake) of the person’s OWN serotonin that the person makes. It does NOT give or provide any external serotonin. It boosts synaptic levels of the person's own serotonin by virtue of reuptake inhibition. I find that this explanation, when graphically described, is helpful to patients to own more fully, the betterment they may experience. Overall, thank you for your helpful video which provides excellent supportive encouragement to those in need.

This is a great explanation! so what exactly takes place when the person increases their dose?
@kevinbunn7915
@kevinbunn7915 2 жыл бұрын
It’s complicated! But in general, there’s more drug to block the reuptake pumps, which leads to more serotonin hanging out in between neurons, and therefore a higher chance they activate the downstream neuron. But, the potential benefits of that take much longer. The brain takes a while to adapt, and there are still lots of unknowns about what other changes happen, and how it reduces various symptoms.
@kevinbunn7915
@kevinbunn7915 2 жыл бұрын
Everything you said is spot on! I’ll just add that drugs of abuse often don’t introduce “extra” neurotransmitters either, so that’s not a reason why it’s safer. Like ecstasy (mdma) isn’t a source of serotonin. It just causes a lot of your own serotonin to be dumped out quickly, which depletes it quickly. And amphetamines block the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine, similar to SSRIs with serotonin. They don’t simply mimic them. There are a lot that are direct agonists, like benzos and opioids. Those are basically synthetic neurotransmitters. But as you know, there are many ways different drugs can effect neurons.

Good for both depressive and anxiety symptoms. Without the side effects like other antidepressants have caused. Such as feeling very numb or or the “zaps” like venlafaxine gave me. @@vegetossgss1114 oh I am so sorry I only just saw this message. Yes it can be normal to feel sedated on some antidepressants. There have been a few that knocked me around like that too. Prozac wasn’t one if them and the Zoloft is a bit like Prozac I didn’t get any sedation and very few side effects on this particular one. I’ve had zaps on venlafaxine too hated that drug, withdrawal symptoms if I didn’t take on the hour each day and I was stuffed if I went out somewhere and had forgotten to take it or bring one with me. I got off that horrible drug. I’ve been on so many and Zoloft is the best one yet. No numbness, more clarity, less agitation and anxiety, no sexual problems at all, lost weight on it which is good, sleep well on it feel ok in the morning, no foggy brain, no zaps, no withdrawals although if I have t taken it for about 2 1/2 days I start to feel a bit weird but nothing major. I have also had a friend start in Zoloft 3 weeks ago and she is looking so much better and feeling so much better, she list her partner 9 months ago and was a mess, she isn’t breaking down in tears and can think through her grief rationally. It’s worth trying. But in saying that everyone is different in the way they metabolise different drugs but I really hope you find something that works for you. I’ve been so low and so unwell in the past and I just could not see the light and I did not know how the torment could end unless I took my live. God I hated those times. If I didn’t have children I don’t think I would be here right now. I took a lot of work and patience, trial and error and after years of being misdiagnosed I was finally heard and was diagnosed with adhd at 49! For years they had me in lithium and all sorts of anti psychotic drugs, anti depressants and labeled me bipolar which I disagreed with for years. Of course the meds they had me on were not going to help. Life really changed once getting the right diagnoses and was able to understand the underlying cause of my issues were. Everything fell into place. I also explored alternative therapies such as reiki, meditation and went to an intuitive healer, with her help I had so many break throughs in only 4 sessions with her. I do feel a change in my mood and my anxiety levels, im hoping it will improve even more. The very beginning i did experience some side effects (still do a bit, guess my body hasn’t adjusted yet) but they are bearable. Lightheadedness and nausea (bearable i promise) i took melatonin to help me sleep but still had insomnia 🫠 When it comes to food and sex drive. I weigh 50 kg, i had apetite issues way before starting zoloft so i dont know if i can judge. I dont feel like my appetite changed, im still not so hungry, infact i feel the nausea from zoloft is affecting that somehow. But the first week i def felt like i wanted to throw up at some point. Multiple times a day, but again it is a normal side effect they say. When it comes to libido yes i do feel a slight difference but my dose is still at 50mg, from what ik it is 100+ dosage that gives those annoying side effects. I still get sexually aroused just like before, but it just takes longer time to experience an orgasm, hasn’t been so annoying for me so far, though im a bit afraid it will affect me even more if i raise the dosage. I know from friends that they experienced dryness too, but they take 100+ mg You know yourself best, if you think you really need zoloft then 100% take it. Clonidine or Guanfacine are off-label options to treat anxiety with fewer side effects than Zoloft. Clonidine and Guanfacine signal the body to not dump so much adrenaline and norepinephrine into circulation, reducing what fuels the "fight or flight" panic and anxiety response in the body.

I never thought I was the type of person to use SSRIs or anti-anxiety meds. I thought panic attacks were overrated. Wow, did I learn my lesson. After a slew of events (a number of deaths, the pandemic, two international moves, starting a PhD program, running into some pretty scary but ultimately benign health conditions myself), I was finally sent over the edge. I was in a constant state of fight-or-flight and I couldn't sleep (like literally awake all night - it was torture). I finally talked to my GP and she has started me on Zoloft with clonazepam to get me through the first days to sleep (tapering off slowly to avoid withdrawal). I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I switched directly to Zoloft and took 25mg for 1 week, then 50mg for 2 weeks, and now taking the prescribed dose for me (100mg). First few weeks didn’t really help at all. But I’m feeling 100% better now. It Came gradually. In the second week I even had to call my dr and tell her anxiety was really bad so she prescribed a low dose of ativan to take as needed. That helped A LOT. and only got a few weeks worth. Now I’m More engaged at work and with my family. I have 9 month old twins and a 3 year old son. When twins were 5 months old I started getting really really bad anxiety almost out of nowhere. A month of hoping it would go away, 2 months of Prozac, and almost 2 months of Zoloft. I recommend it 100% if your having issues.

My daughter and I both had bad reactions to Zoloft. It caused impulse control issues, which resulted in different problems for each of us. The one bad impulse control issue both of us shared is shopping addiction, and we both racked up thousands of dollars' worth of out-of-control spending. We both have done much better on Guanfacine/Clonidine to treat anxiety with zero side effects. Everyone is different, so what works for one person might not work for another. I highly recommend having a doctor who is willing to think outside the box, treats each patient as an individual, and will take the time to try various medication options in order to find what works best with the fewest amount of side effects.

The boost in norepinephrine from the Wellbutrin can fuel the "fight or flight" panic and anxiety response. The medications that directly counteract this are Guanfacine or Clonidine, since they signal the body to not dump so much norepinephrine into circulation. This reduces what fuels that panic and anxiety response. The combination of Wellbutrin and Guanfacine have been a miracle for me daughter. The Guanfacine also has much, much fewer side effects than Zoloft and other serotonin-based medications.

I was prescribed 50mg Sertraline after a nine year relationship breakup where my fiancee left me for another guy. I became super depressed and suicidal. After four weeks or so I hadn't noticed any change and I beginning to make plans to end my life. My doctor increased my dose to 100mg. The side effects that impacted me the most was my inability to sleep properly. I would sleep 12-14hrs straight, wake up tired and need to nap frequently. This and the brain fog made it impossible for me to make decisions or begin to make changes in my life. It was impacting my ability to work, not that I was working much, because I was always sleeping or overly tired. I've abruptly stop taking the medication and my sleep has improved. I feel better about myself and can actually think properly again. I know it's risky stopping meds especially since how bad I was but I actually feel better and am starting to make plans for the future. I am conscious that I could relapse but at the moment things seem to be getting better.

Hey there, I'm 21 now but depression and anxiety got me first in June 2020. I didn't do anything and just ignored it but my parents said that you are having stomach issues. So we started treating the stomach for 3 years straight but it didn't help out. And I still feel the same as day 1 and I've been fighting myslef for a long time. Even little tasks like walking, going to gym, driving, going out feel overwhelming and I feels like it might be the last moments of mine. Sometimes extreme panic attacks occur and I start screaming out loud. A few days ago I consulted a Psychiatrist accepting my condition and he prescribed me Zoloft. Been taking 25mg of it for the first week and will take 50mg daily for 6 months. I hope I'll get back to life and achieve whatever I've planned for. Pray for me guys.

The ups and downs are absolutely uncontrollable, and i can't keep an emotion to such a negative extent i can't even work a regular job.. tired of this. I've been on SSRIs most of my life gut quit cold Turkey multiple times. I don't feel or notice the side effects of sertraline because I've dealt with opiate withdrawal but this and ADHD i am now getting treatment for. But still having small relapses and slips can't go more than 4 or 5 days because boredom, lack of motivation, but it all feels so chemical. Like pure imbalance. My brain is hypersensitive to itself so i can identify the differences. And like you said you may need a little extra serotonin, that's me.

I am glad you have a good experience on the same. Personally I've been taking it for 3 months with no positive mood effects (indeed on occasion racing thoughts which are quite disturbing).along with extreme tiredness, some nausea and stomach upsets which are just not abating. When I next see my psychiatrist later this month I am going to have a discussion about the same, in the meantime though I have begun CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) which is proving to be very helpful. Had I started CBT earlier (after 6 months of ineffectual Psycho Dynamic therapy) I am pretty sure I would not have considered taking an antidepressant.

I've been taking 100mg of Zoloft for 2 years. I switched to 150mg for a week and it was too much, I was so weak and tired, I couldn't get out of bed. I might try 75mg. Overall..... it has improved my anxiety tremendously

Hello from Norway, and thank you for your video 🥰 I've been taking 200 mg Zoloft for about 17 years now (I know, that's alot), but that was the dose I have to use to function in the daily life 🙄 You are the first person online I've heard talking about Zoloft 🥰 Thank you.

I took my first pill 5 hours ago. I am so scared and anxious now, drowsy at the same time. I am afraid and trying to get as much of positive information as I can about sertaline. I was prescribed for depression, which I thought was ok, as it’s a higher functioning depression. But I really need help. I feel detached, I play the patterns of the 5-8 year old from the abusive upbringing (while I am almost 40) and cannot do it anymore. I want my life back. I am seeking therapy emdr as well. Will include sport in my routine. And I really hope I will be my best self back again.❤

I am considering Zoloft after my therapist and psychiatrist have recommended it. I’ve been suffering my whole life... but I didn’t want to go on something forever. I hope to retrain my brain to not react so negatively to everything... If this is a trap where I end up on Zoloft and can never get off... I just don’t know if I want a marriage to Zoloft. I really want to be able to do this on my own, or with some assistance from Zoloft short term... but forever... ughhhhh I still don’t know what to do. I do really appreciate you telling your story so thank you SO much for sharing!

@@zartasha890 I’ve started micro-dosing psilocybin mushrooms... it helps to create new neural pathways in the brain so we can reprogram our mind. Doing it alongside mindfulness practices (meditation, journaling, and being more conscious of my internal dialogue), I can see the issues with my thought patterns and literally start thinking the opposite for a better mind frame and perspective. I hope it helps! Not a magical cure, because you need to do the “work” (aka mindfulness and reprogramming your mind) but I LOVE that there are no negative side effects. It won’t effect your libido either (big bonus). Plus I feel so much more chill. And I can be in a vehicle as a passenger without having a panic attack (I’ve never had my license because of anxiety) and now I can at least tolerate a drive across town.

I have 2 bottles of Zoloft. I have pain in my neck, gall bladder issues, gut issues, diverticulitis, vision issues, arthritis in Right hand due to breathing my 4th metacarpal 2 years ago, constipation, house needs repair, inflation, hours at work full time to 20hours a week due to employer not finding me more clients , burning back pain when working in my kitchen all duties. Husband of 35 years, lost his doctor due to retirement, so cut off his Norco Vicadin, found Fetanol, I have had anxiety attacks for 20 years on and off. Triggered a couple of months ago , when dormant for 9 years. So one day in tears, I explained this to my DR. The answer was Zoloft. Since she did not address my physical ailments. I refuse to take Zoloft because my circumstance is more my internal body. I was perfectly healthy 2 years ago, until bitten twice by the same dog, given too many antibiotics that ruined my micro biome. C-Diff, COVID, ect I go in for a well check, her only concern was my reaction to Zoloft

Liz, you sound like a light skinned version of me lol. This is my experience. I'm a perfectionist -- that does not help. Today is my first day on sertraline, after having a major panic attack on the train a few weeks ago. Culturally this type of medication is frowned upon. This had a major say in whether I sought help for anxiety that I thought was simply a character trait. it - is - not.
