In this video I talk about some of the soil amendments that can be helpful in Succulent growing, what the amendments are, and why you might want to use them. As well as sharing my Succulent soil recipe! There are many different opinions and theories on potting soil. Many say that the soil it grows in its natural environment is always best. And while I respect their opinion, my experience has been when the plants environment changes, so does what type of soil it tolerates best. So find what works for your succulents, and go for it! Happy growing!

I agree with you that soil mixes vary depending upon where the plants are grown and the type of plants. I live in Southern California near the ocean and can grow most plants without using a greenhouse. I have problems going desert cactus because the summer temperature is not high enough. I can drive less than ten miles and find cactus growing in the hill sides. I like to experiment with different soil mixes when growing difficult plants.

Very similar to what I use in WV. Extremely humid spring through fall here. Completely agree with you. I'd rather have to water more and have less concern of over watering. Likewise losing them to rot through winter.

Hi Ashley! Thanks for sharing your expertise; I love your videos. I was wondering what you think of worm castings. I like to amend the soil of my sucs and some of my cacti using worm castings instead of fertilizing. Like you I live in a climate zone where the winters are cold and / or wet. The summers can be hot and dry or wet and medium cool. So drainage is vital. But I am no fan of chemical fertilizers; I prefer organic fertilizers; and in my experience plants are so much healthier and so much mor pest-resistent when I fertilize organically. What do you think? Best wishes from Berlin, Germany; and happy gardening! Marc

Thank you so much Ashley. What mix would you recommend for Desert Rose Plant in S. Florida hot and needs fast draining medium June-November Rain/hurricane season?

I just put "the kids" all in coir/small lava rock mix. In Phx you'd think sucs would thrive but come 12-hour happy sun and 100-degree constant heat, it is hard to strike a moisture balance for them without moving them all inside. By midday, they could be drying out! I was mildly successful last year in coir and frequesnt watering but am adding lava rock to break it up a bit. I've also thought of using DE but isn't it similar to perlite in texture and dust? Very true, the climate the plants are in matters and no one mentions this!

Cacti Lady, honestly I would ask a local nursery what they would recommend for your area. Often with outdoor potting in warm climates you need a bit different soil. And what we use here in Idaho is a lot more geared to our cool, wet climate, and I don’t feel that would correlate well to your needs. Wish I could be more help, but I would suggest finding a knowledgeable grower in your area to ask what would work best in your area for outdoor cacti containers. 💓

i made a mix for seeds it's •40% marble chips •30% cactus mix •20% pearlite •10% vermiculite. I had no pumice so i used marble chips, is this mix any good for anything or were the marble chips a bad idea. (edit))((would it be a better better mix if i add a bag of peat moss to it )

Good morning. I have a question. I notice that the Pumice you use is much bigger than mine. As l told you, l use the one from Ikea. The name of it is...Growing media Växer Pumice stones. Ikea sells that for to use whit the Krydda shelfs whit lights for hydroponic cultivation that they sell there.. Would you please take a look on this Växer Pumice on Google to see how it looks? They don't mention a size on the package, but it is smaller than what you have.. I believe l pay something like 3 € for a 3 liters. However. I would like to know what you think about it? Is a bigger size better? Is the size you have the ideaal size? I would love to know. I thank you in advaance for this one. Nice day

Where do you get pumace? Thanks
@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 5 жыл бұрын
Selena Papalazaros I buy it locally from a nursery here by the 25 lb bag. Sometimes if you can’t find it at nurseries you can get it at feed stores. It’s usually called “dry stall” and is sold for absorbing moisture in horse pens. A lot of places pumice is really hard to find though.... I know there are a few places you can order it online, but shipping is often expensive cause it’s heavy. I hope you are able to find some! ❤️

It's ok to use pure pumice on my haworthia? I'm from Philippines.
@CrayonConoisseur

Hi po. It's ok to use pure pumice but it lacks nutrients for growth. So if you use pure pumice, you should use fertilizer when you water every now and then, or use slow release fertilizer like osmocote or nutricote instead. Another option is that you can add a little vermicast to your pumice at 70%pumice and 30%vermicast.

Michele Jones I think I either never made another video exclusively on other soil amendments, or else I made it and it refused to upload cause I can’t find it either, and it’s been too long for my brain to recall. I did just do a video on a few amendments last week in a store, and I’ll publish that soon. But I guess I need to make another video on soil amendments! I talk about a lot of amendments in soil, but the info is just strewn throughout the videos. So I will put it in my notebook to do a new video on soil amendments! Or if I find it I’ll post the link for you! Sorry about the confusion, I’m not sure what happened to it, or if I just intended to make another one. 💓

jo yes, as I say, the balance of your soil needs to be changed depending on what you are planting, and where in the world you live. If you live somewhere with higher humidity, or you want to water more, this mix probably won’t be ideal. But where we live, this mix works great!
