My Prints have Banding! Wait a minute, that's not banding!
True Banding Artifact is caused by clogged nozzles or a badly aligned Print Head or a mechanical Paper advance Problem!
That was not the case here.
The problem was not Banding but JPG Artifacts cause d by too high a compression setting when the files were saved.

This information helped me a lot, so thank you! I was getting stripes on part of my prints, but not throughout the entire image. I was originally printing direct from a Photoshop file I created, but then I saved it as a high quality JPEG and the lines went away. Thanks again!

I don't even shoot jpegs anymore. My card slots are both set to RAW, the second slot being nothing more than backup redundancy in case of card failure. The only jpegs I have were derived from the non destructive final edit, otherwise I save to .TIFF for printing 😊

Talking about cost per megabites, In 2000 or 2001 I purchased a 64 MB compact flash card for my 2 mpx canon s100 point and shoot from best buy for $159. and change. The camera took only jpg. I have a print of my granddaughter printed from a 640 x 480 jpg at 11x14 and it is amazing. I was a great picture in camera for 640x480. You cant see individual eye lashes but I would not have had the pic if nor for this little camera. I used ON1 software to upsize the picture. I still use the newest version when someone wants me to print a small pixel count jpg to 8x10 or bigger. By the way I only shoot raw now. Thanks for the video.

In your final processing steps you choose your output compression based on the intended viewing medium. Web viewing can withstand more compression than a printing target. If you take an image processed for web viewing and print it large it will look horrible and you’ll have all sorts of JPEG artifacts. Know and understand your workflow.

Totally right. There is also that rumour that saving a jpeg with 90 or even 80 percent quality is "as good as 100 percent". Not true. - I can understand though that a wedding photographer doesn't want to give the raw files away. Most people don't know what to do with them anyhow. But if they try to make large prints themselves instead of asking the professional photographer to make professional prints, they are bound to get bad results. Saving money at the wrong place that is!

No doubt many wedding photographers are short changing their clients with fairly low quality jpegs. When you order prints from them they are often cropped such that if you want to frame them you cut off half of some bodies head. This is the main reason I got into printing my own pics.

Do you mean up and down in the direction of the paper travel? Usually banding occurs in the direction of the printhead travel and not in the other axis.

On LR mobile you import the raw file from the device's camera roll, edit the RAW in the app, then export it as a JPEG back to the device camera roll. You have a choice of a very small JPEG or best quality JPEG, not sure exactly what the best quality is but it looks very good and not a low quality file. You can't export in any other file type than JPEG out of LR mobile, but there would not be much point anyway as mobile devices can only display JPEGS. When you load RAW's onto a mobile device from your camera you only see a crappy quality preview. It looks about 2 megapixel quality instead of the 36 megapixels of the actual photo. You only get to see the full RAW file quality once it's in LR mobile.

+1 for lossless compression formats. PNG, DNG, TIFF with LZW compression, FLAC for audio, etc. Beware: some camera manufacturers have lossy RAW format options, like Sony. Their "Compressed RAW" is actually lossy, unlike Canon's RAW with uses a lossless compression.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
I do not know about Lossy Raw formats. That is new to me as I don't really keep up with camera gear to much. But I would never accept a camera that would force that type of file on me. You do have the option not to use it don't you?
@Streaml1neJMoose
@Streaml1neJMoose 6 жыл бұрын
Sony's default is lossy, but they added a firmware option in most if not all of the A7 series cameras a few years ago, to be able to select uncompressed RAWs. For some reason they didn't use a lossless compression format to begin with. It doesn't make sense. The uncompressed RAW's obviously take up more space but they also reduce the number of shots you can take before the buffer fills up since it has to write larger files. The end result for action shots is you have think about shooting bursts because you might run out of buffer and miss a critical shot. The link below link explains their lossy compression scheme, they claim it only rears its head in certain scenarios but this shouldn't even be a thing nowadays. Lossless compression formats have been around forever and are relatively cheap in terms of processing power. www.dpreview.com/articles/2834066212/the-raw-and-the-cooked-pulling-apart-sony-raw-compression

I have to chuckle about burst shooting just get that one maybe good shot. Some of the most fantastic action shots demonstrating the skill of timing were done with a 4x5 Graphlex! One shot at a time, you had to be good.

Jose Rodriguez That's "Progress" for you :) I've made plenty of use of burst mode at airshows so I shouldn't talk. That one perfect action gets alot harder to capture when two jets are closing at a thousand miles per hour. Hehe.

Hi there just a quick question should i be using 8 bit channel or 16 bit channel for printing in Photoshop Thank you
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 5 жыл бұрын
Windows will down grade it to 8bit at the driver. Hardly non one has show there is a much difference even when printing on a MAC system which does allow 16 bit printing.

I still remember the time one of my best friends asked me to print an A2 poster (16.54 × 23.39 inches) and I was like "sure! No problem dear!" but then she sent me a jpeg file of about 100KB that was something like 1280x720 or less hahaha. The fact is that if you're not a professional and you're inexperienced there are absolutely no problems about making these mistakes, but seriously? A professional photographer that gives for 1000$ a CD full of jpegs? That's nearly a scam ahah.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it happens quite often. In this case the file was full resolution but over compressed. So they had lots of jpeging in the shadows.

Mine is bad head alignment, but Win10 does not have a way for the manual adjustment. I tried auto with no luck. Updated driver thinking the software is old and had no option for manual..but even with new, I select manual, and it has no prompt for entering value options to adjust the head. I searched around, and out of options. What to do?!!

If the encoder strip is dirty it will never be able to be correctly aligned. That is the clear strip tuck away behind the print head in the rear wall of the printer.

@@cheo1949 THanks Joe, did not know that. I guess its the electronic strip behind the browninsh orange tape like plastic? The part installed initially that I can take out from the main carraige? When you say print head, that is what I think, the part with nozzles on it. Not the part on the rail.
