I can't say enough about triads. Yes! Triads are so important as the foundation of strong playing. I teach triads three different ways with each of my Berklee students (Horizontal, Vertical, Same inversion.)
Next, I ask them to work a little more, but be careful not to overwhelm yourself with too much information (14:30)! The next step is to do C , F , Bb , Eb triads all three ways without hesitation. Finally, I ask them to work on a combination of C & F triads (16:30). I use this test to improve myself! Thank you for watching!

Hi Tomo! First of all I wanted to thank you for all the incredible content you keep sharing with us and to congratulate you for your excellent teacher skills. I subscribed to Guitar Wisdom with the idea of improving my knowledge on guitar foundations (I've been a self-taught guitar player all my life and, as you can tell, people like me sometimes know a lot about some stuff but have a lack of knowledge regarding other basic areas). My goal this year has been to improve in rhythm and triads and just wanted to thank you because I have learned so much during the last couple of months. I practice almost daily and even when sometimes I wish I could learn things faster, I came to the point where I understand that quality time and time itself is a must in order to achieve real improvement. This video just complements what I have been learning during the last month and, as always, it's an awesome and super informative and motivating video. So, I just wanted to say thank you Tomo for everything! Cheers

Hi Tomo! Tomás here, from Argentina. As you mentioned halfway through the video, maybe it is not the most "popular" (as if that mattered) but it's one of your most valuable ones. There's nothing like building a strong foundation, not only in music but in all the beautiful diversity of life. The ability to enjoy the "slowness" of a process and being able to dive deep into big little details is a direct invitation to mindful learning. As a player and teacher myself, I find refreshment of ideas constantly while watching your videos, and that inspires me to keep working with love and patience, day by day, Thank you so much!

Wow. I never thought triads were that important. They were one of the only things I once learned from a jazz guitar book and still play them just for the fun of it. And when you begin to add 4th note you realize all the chords are actually connected and just inversions of each other. Great teacher!

I love teaching triads, they really are the foundation for good fretboard knowledge. I had a great teacher named Steve Sage who has since passed away, teach me many of the same concepts you teach. He studied with Larry Carlton, Joe Pass, Tommy Tedesco, and Howard Roberts at GIT back in the day. Was always so cool to get first hand stories from him about his experience studying with these great and influential players. Thanks again for all that you do Tomo, your playing and teaching really do remind me of my late teacher Steve ❤

Hi Tomo, I have been playing guitar for several decades and appreciate your depth of knowledge and teaching style. I appreciate this video because you convey such a positive approach in your teaching style. What's important in this lesson, I have found, is not necessarily the notes themselves but how clean we make every note sound and how we focus on the fingering, including the thumb position -- this helps remind ourselves that each set of triads we play is different from the others -- it keeps us honest so we don't cheat. This lesson reminds me that quality is often more important than quantity, and also that once we are comfortable and establish a solid base we can progress more naturally to the next phase of our development in learning the guitar. I can shred all day long but lessons like this keep me on my toes and reinforce the importance of good technique and patience. One thing you said that really stands out is "Be kind to yourself" -- wow, that is really important! We love music and we love guitar, so we shouldn't beat ourselves up for how much we think we might suck, but rather, love ourselves for the effort we dedicate as we work to improve in our guitar playing and acknowledge how good we actually really are.

This is such a refreshing approach to learning (not just guitar but learning in general) which is why I joined Guitar Wisdom. This really is wisdom. Slow but sure with real comprehension. I remember somebody saying with regard to language learning "if I just learn words (vocabulary) then I am borrowing them. If I understand how they are formed and where they come from then I own them" This is so applicable to music too and this is what your lessons give to the student ; understanding. Thank you so much Tomo for all of your advice and remarkable teching method. I will always be grateful to you.

Tomo San, this is a great lesson for every level of player. You make us all do some more work and thats always the best sign of a good teacher. Very motivational! Some students here might benefit from charts with the exact lh fingering for your appraoch, me for one surely would like a diagram to double check my efforts. Can you recomend some literature to get on your website or other resources?

I think part of the problem with teaching the foundation is that things like triads are deceptively simple. It's easy to look and say, "I see", without actually doing, and then say "I get it" and then power through to the next thing without listening or hearing, and ask "how do you make good solos?". Wow, talk about a shortcut! I think the way you're teaching it drills the fundamentals, how it sounds, recognizing which inversions are nearby and how they're constructed -- true foundations, very structural. I like your hint at the next step, to play them through the circle of fourths, to help give them a sense of musical structure, too. I think that is what students are jumping ahead to: we want to find the musical structure after the physical structure... while we are still stumbling over our fingers in a bad foundation. And here, I think there is some more work that could be done with fundamental exercises. Because triads are essentially small chords, they seem to get filed in our brains as "grips" and not used in a musical context. So what I like to also do, is play through triad arpeggios in one position, up-the-scale, (up / down the neck, vertical). I think this conveys the idea that a different inversion of one triad, is very closely related to a triad of a different quality, with nearly the same notes. For example, a 1rst inversion C triad is only one note different than an E minor root position triad. And that difference is the major 7th (B) of the C, which is of course the perfect 5th of the E minor. A simple exercise which I'm trying to work up for myself is to go up one triad and down the next one in the cycle. For instance, if I go up C (C,E,G arpeggio). Using the next "C", the octave of the root, I see that it is the top of a root position F arpeggio (F,A,C). Same with the next F note above that, it is the 5th of the root position Bb arpeggio (Bb, D, F), and around the cycle you can go with triad arpeggios. You can then hear how chords that are a fourth apart interact with melody notes. I've seen other teachers take this into "way-too-advanced-for-beginner-super-human" territory called "triad pairs", but I think there can be more fundamental exercises, closer to the a "normal human" achievable level, in order to learn to hear how melodies are linked... not just with the cycle of 4ths, but other interesting pairs that can color a "normal" chord progression. It could be something to add to the measure of proficiency, to know the triads as arpeggios and as linking melody phrases. AND CONGRATULATIONS on nearly a HALF-MILLION subscribers! Good job!
