My mom has an African grey named Charlie and only she could take him out. He is 16 but I've always wanted to be able to pick him up, I have spent 2 years trying to get him to step up without biting and last week finally accomplished it! He is a much happier bird now that he gets out more!

my grey is obsessed with our kitchen counter. if she flies, i always know to look for her there. i can catch her a million times and reroute her, but it's always right back to kitchen counter after i place her down 😂 she just loves it. no idea why. she came to us at 17 unable to fly and now loves to do her route through the house to the counter.

African Greys are so beautiful! Well all parrots are. Have you ever had to train a cockatoo before? I’m sure you have. From just watching videos of them I swear they have a few screws loose 😂. One lady who was fostering one and then decided to adopt because she fell in love with her, her cockatoo learned how to bark like a dog just from listening to the owners dog doing it. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in my life. She sounds just like the dog too, and when someone knocked or rang the doorbell she would jump down from wherever she was and go running and barking to the door. She can’t fly at all so she just runs everywhere. Also she plucks her feathers out so badly that the owner had to start making these sort of like bibs that goes over her head that helps to keep her from getting to her feathers to pluck them out. Have you ever had to deal with a bird that stress plucked their feathers?

What a difference. My Grey still won’t come out of the cage. She came out once but that was scary for her. She spent 23 yrs in a 2’x2’x30” cage on one perch, no chew materials or toys. She ate KAYTEE parrot food the whole time. Amazingly her labs came back great. The nurse raved about the results. I don’t think I took her until 2 months after I got her in which time I changed her diet. I was told she never really bit anyone that entire time. She loves her new mansion (cage). She is a huge chewer and I try to keep plenty of wood on hand. I don’t try to force her to step up as I saw her interacting with her ex owner when he did. Amazingly she never bit him. Her feathers are no longer brittle, rough and frayed. She has quit plucking and her feathers are growing in nicely. So far I’ve only seen one or two small red feathers grow back. I can pet her. I can reach in her cage and change out toys. As a rule she’s not aggressive unless she’s upset about something. Usually it’s when I have my Conure out and on me. She’s so jealous. Also if I’ve put a toy in her cage she doesn’t like she pitches a fit until I remove. It. She’s so funny. When I have new toys I’ll hold each one up separately and let her choose. I either get a head shake or a head bob. If I put in a toy with the head shake that’s when she’ll get upset.

I’ve learned so much from watching your series of videos, especially how to be patient with my own rescues. My little parrotlet, for instance, who I worked so hard to train to step up, learned to do that in a month. But it took him 6 months to finally go into his own cage on his own. Which he did today. I was so happy for him. He flew to his cage and went down into the door and put himself inside. My budgie has been doing this since I got him. But for my parrotlet this is the first time I’ve ever seen him do this, so this is huge. It means he sees his cage as a home, a safe place, and knows it’s his own space that he feels comfortable in, which makes me so happy. And I think he also watched the budgies put themselves into their cage, and modeled their behavior, which is kind of adorable. Birds really are mimics. Another thing I recently discovered is a good way to get birds to eat their veggies or their pellets is to have them all eat these things at the same time. Because they’ll see their flock eating them and they’ll get excited and try to get them. Suddenly they have to have them. The other day they practically fought eachother for a bowl of pellets! (Don’t worry, I don’t let them fight eachother.)

I. LOVE Capri……what a little cutie….and he loves her to scratch him. You can see he has no fear of her for getting what he likes. I have an African Grey…..they’re so determined to be a one person bird!……..my bird lives with me and my daughter and her family. So, he sees them all the time…..but only if there’s no other way and I’m not around, will he step up to go back to familiar territory, or let one of them take him to his cage. Absolutely NO WAY will he allow anyone else to scratch him, so I’m really impressed with how fast he trusted Capri to scratch him!!

I noticed he really loved to look at your family pictures. From what I understand they are not as cuddly as a cockatoo but they are highly intelligent and I am loving the interaction he is showing, it's very positive. You are brave giving him so much freedom. I am just thinking out loud, but birds can be very destructive and chew a lot of your walls and door or window trims. I love that you are giving him such healthy foods to help him learn to eat more natural foods, plant foods and nuts and things. You are doing a great job. I think it will be hard for you to let him go when you do! He is precious! I love how empathic your daughter is, she is definitely just like you.

🦜He’s so handsome. I’m a vet asst. FYI. You should try an all aluminum cage, because galvanized steel like yours, can get a white rusty powder, in between the cage rungs and bars, and that causes heavy metal poisoning in tropical birds. Some bells, and metallic paint on bird toys can cause it, too. Some other things to watch out for: Teflon coated cooking pans, when cooking food at high heat, causes fumes which is dangerous to birds, keep their quarters out of the kitchen. Also any chemicals, like nail polish, polish remover, glass cleaner. Spores in the air, or in bird food. They’re very sensitive. Really sweet bird! 💕

My African gray would make this body language when I would put her down on a perch near something that she didn’t want to be near, so maybe Bean didn’t like something that was near the perch behind him, it could be as simple as a wallpaper running on the computer screen, which scares my bird for some reason. (Irrational fear) Or maybe something else on the table. It’s just enough to make them uncomfortable to start showing signs that they want to get away. The only difference here is he wouldn’t except help to get away either. Which was very funky. Thank you for always posting these videos

Love watching development with bean. I had a Grey much like the same situation you had. Gordy was in bad shape. I feather plucker. I was his third owner. The second owner was a heavy smoker. I had hoped that was the root of the feather plucking. No such luck. Had to give him up when I had medical problems and moved to Mexico. I use to raise cockatiels so I know what I'm doing. You will find that birds love to eat dandelions. But make sure they haven't been treated with herbicide. They will eat everything from the root to the blossom. Love watching your progress. When I first got Gordy he bit me so bad he drew blood. But I didn't let him know that it hurt. I didn't want him to use it as protection whenever he felt the need 😃

Bean sure loves when Capri gives him head scritches. I would like to hear your thoughts on sometime though. A little set up: I have a 42 year old U2 named Pebbles. I am her second human and her first home was a good home but they got to be older and not able to give Pebbles the time she needed. She spent most of the last ten years in a 10 X 14 room by herself with her only human contact being when she was fed. She has her cage and perch in the room and a couple rudimentary toys but that's it. Not an abusive situation but far from what I would consider ideal. Luckily they are an ex's parents so I've known (and been Pebbles human choice) for 12 years before she moved in with me. She is a man's bird and usually won't tolerate a woman touching or even feeding her. My daughter (12) can pet her every once in a very great while but Pebbles usually tells her no. My son (8) is a whole 'notha story. Pebbles loves my son and wants to be around him any time he is in the same room. She doesn't get upset if she can't be or anything. But she does want it. Pebbles has known both kids since their births. On to my query. I notice you involve Capri a lot and that's great in my opinion. But do you ever worry the birds will bite her? And if one did bite her, what would you do? I'm pretty certain Pebbles would never bite my son unprovoked but there is always that little niggle at the back of my brain that says, "what if?"
