Mine came off from time to time when I was a kid. Once it came flying off during a soccer game, scaring the hell out of the opposing goalie. He had the ball *AND* my leg flying at him. Funny enough, they said the goal counted.

If you put water in the sleeve, if there's a hole you'll see the water coming out of it if there is a hole. I wear splints, when they need replacing duct tape lives in my bag. It takes months to get new ones by the NHS, so when the splints break before the new ones are made it duct tape always helps.

Abigail Ash Is your sleeve’s inner covered in silicone or something else? On electronics stuff we use a variety of different silicone (and other) sealants to weatherproof them; maybe one of those might work and be more comfortable than tape? MG Chemicals 422B comes to mind, and there’s both an aerosol and a brush-on version - definitely apply in a well ventilated area and try it on normal fabric then an old sleeve if you do, and use a 40mm USB fan to help it dry/cure... Obviously not medical grade, but I’m guessing duct tape doesn’t quite make the cut there either? Anyway, maybe it would help things last longer - especially if it worked well enough to be able to eventually coat an entire area? I’m also trying to find medical grade liquid silicones, but not having as much luck - the closest consumer-available stuff is for scar treatment and is $$$ 🤷‍♂️ Anyway if you decide to try it and it works/doesn’t let me know? (Geez this comment went long!)

If I were to look at something like this (I sort of collect DIY methods) I think I would use bookbinding methods. Bookbinding is a mixture of suture and gluing. The glue should be both pH-neutral and perpetually flexible. With bookbinding glue you can glue two pieces of textile together. You can also (probably) add an airtight quality to textile. So I would recommend bookbinding PVA and/or methyl cellulose glue with or without adding new textile material. Don't know if this will help, but I LOVE when knowledge from one discipline can be used in an other. The evening school system in my country (the Faroe Islands) is awesome!

So glad you fixed it. Vacuum systems are part engineering and part witchcraft! For holes in the sleeve, I use silicone. I also get better results by duct taping the bottom of the sleeve. They last longer also. Getting parts as a traveling amputee for 46 years now can be frustrating. While I appreciate the help of my prosthetists, as experienced amputees we should be free to order the parts ourselves and be taught basic maintenance and repairs. When I compare prosthetics to mountain bikes I am quite frustrated. As a mountain biker, I can order any part online and there is a myriad of resources available online to teach me how to maintain my bike. I can price match between different platforms and find the best deal. Spare parts for my prosthetic limb are way overpriced and often poorly constructed based on my level of activity. I'm restricted from buying online and even finding out prices. For instance, while in Thailand, I needed to ask my prosthetist in Australia to buy a part for me from Germany, then post it to my sister who then posted it to me. This can take weeks, all the while my activity is restricted and walking can be painful while I await the parts to do the repairs myself. I do hope with your influence Jo we can change this.

I had no idea things like these parts were so expensive. That's terrible! A couple of things came to mind regarding patching holes. The product Flex Seal receives a lot of TV commercial time but I've used it on a variety of things with amazing results. I don't know how well it would work in this situation, but it might be worth an experiment. There's also a tape called 'gaffer' tape that might have better adhesion and flexibility than duct tape. Anyway, I'm glad you figure this one out!

Team some assembly required 😂Sleeves rip super easy (especially BK’s when kneeling) so check for tiny holes, check the liner for tiny holes too. Blow up the sleeve/liner and put it in some water to see if there are any tiny bubbles. Watch out for cats walking on you as their claws can pierce tiny holes in your sleeve/liner Ive lost weight so I’m walking out of my liner so my residual is kind of pistoning inside my socket when I walk and because my prosthetic isn’t properly fitting I can feel the full weight of my prosthetic which is knackering swinging my prosthetic when walking(when the leg fits you don’t really notice the weight at all). Top tip use a paint brush to clean out the passive valve as sand grit can easily bung up the valve and stop it closing 🤗🤗 ps Have you had the ole ‘liner fart’ yet? Now trust me walking down Hospital corridors whilst your liner is farting is hilarious and slightly embarrassing when someone passes you 🤣😂🤣 #amputeeproblems #amputeehumour

Finding holes in a liner is difficult. If you put alcohol in a spray bottle then spray on the liner, the hole will quickly show up when you stretch it. You are correct - the hole is usually at the top trim line of the socket. I've put a hole in my brand new Ottobock Pro-Flex sleeves more than once by kneeling down and resting weight on my knee on a hard surface. Sometimes you can position the sleeve a bit lower on the socket so that the hole rest against the socket outer surface. This will obviously only work limited times since you'll eventually get the sleeve too low to be functional. I would rather have an expulsion type valve on a passive suction system like you have. That pressure relief valve on yours works fine for elevated vacuum, but does not sufficiently allow air to escape like an expulsion valve does. As already mentioned, that type valve is subject to leakage when very little debris (such as sock fuzz, dirt, or maybe even animal hair) gets in it which renders the symptom you were having. Forcing warm water through it (from inside out), while depressing the button usually clears it.

My husband cuts a gallon ziplock and puts it between the sleeve and the black part to make a seal and lengthen the life on the sleeves. He has always had issues with brand new sleeves getting pin holes. I think he uses gallon cause of the thickness of the plastic, not necessarily the size although if there are multiple small pin holes it probably helps.

"Pistoning" can be caused by having not enough padding on the leg to create a tight fit within the prosthetic. As you move around it pushes fluid up out of your leg which creates space as the leg contracts. This can change multiple times per day. Too little padding and you can hear air escaping and possible get bruising. To much and it can cause too much pressure on the leg which can cause a lot of temporary pain. Also as an emergency (or safety net) solution would be to buy a velcro thigh wrap. These are designed to support the thigh in the case of an injury but I apply one over the outside and it keeps the leg from slipping especially when my weight is not directly over the foot such as during exercising (sit-ups, leg lifts, etc.). I get supplies from Amputeestore.com but then my supplies are older/simpler versions and cost a lot less. On another topic, if you bend your knee a lot (riding bike) the friction between the sleeve and the socket can wear a hole in the sleeve. The best thing that I've found is to line the socket edges with denim. It resists wear but you do have to make sure that it doesn't slide out of place before you start (it migrates slightly unless you glue it in).

I am testing out my new suction system. The sleeve....ok so I got big thighs, and getting it to stay up is not the easiest thing nor rolling it up. My hands and elbows absolutely hate me right now! He said this leg will probably only last 3 months. My pin lock only lasted a month before I needed a new one as I was in a 10ply. Now its been staying at a 15ply. And I was told I would always have 2 sleeves even if one gets a hole in it. I might go back to a pin...not sure yet. And yes I know all about having to get a script from your doctor. Luckily for me my GP absolutely rocks!!! So what happens if you need a new socket before 6 months?

It's been awhile since you put this up, but glad I watched. It's taking awhile for my stump to heal, but hoping to start getting fitted for a BK leg in January. I've been wondering what Hanger Clinic (mine is in Decatur Illinois) will suggest for me. The more I watch, the more a pin lock system seems logical. In three months I've beat my iWalk all to heck, and it's nowhere near as precision as a leg. I own a repair shop (auto upholstery) and clomp through a busy cluttered shop, climb over, around and through things including boats and cars, and just generally refuse to give in to not having a leg (except going up the rung ladder at one of my lofts. My fiancee and a friend giving me a hand have expressly forbid it, lol). It seems the pin lock might be a bit more archaeic, but more on the rugged side.

I am active on a facebook group, so you help me see some differences to help others with issues, and I thank you for that, Jo. I see now the hole in sleeve issue so common with some below knee. All around above knee seems barely any issues in comparison, except of course learning and using a fake knee. Not competition, lol. But the shape of the thigh, only one bone, and the buttocks as a stopper and to take some weight, liner bending at knee, pinching behind knee. Anyway, I ramble Hi.

Sergio Accioly I’m an amputee so maybe I can answer your questions. I can go 10 hours in my prosthetic. My prosthetic doesn’t hurt me , it’s my other leg that does because I have drop foot and all my toes were also amputated. It’s different, of course, for each person. I have a bleeding disorder so I can mild small bruises when wearing it that long. As for wearing it on a hot day, well, I live in Arizona so it gets very wet inside the liner. The sweat can really build up inside it so I carry a towel and occasionally take my prosthetic off to let my stump dry off and get some air and wipe down my liner’s insides. Hope that helps you understand

Jo, I hate to be an ass, but what you pulled out of that box near the end is a suspension sleeve, not a liner. The liner is what goes on your residual limb. I too have to get my prosthetist to pull on my suspension sleeve, it’s a real bitch to pull on to the carbon fiber socket. And you’re right small pin holes can be almost invisible.

Cling film/plastic food wrap can help get the sleeve over the footshell easier and less risk of piercing or ripping the sleeve. Plus a dry paint brush to clean the valve from dirt, grit, fur, hair as this can stop the valve closing properly

Mine fell off When I was doing the monkey bars in fourth grade. If you have problems I ended up changing to one with a pen in the bottom and it’s a lot easier and it never falls off. You don’t have to wear the outside light out you just wear the inside one with a pen at the bottom and it doesn’t touch your skin so it feels like the other one. PS you probably won’t see this but good advice

Hey Jo, I don't know if your able to make modifications to your leg, I had to get a whole new socket with a hole in it for a screw with grooves in it. (I can send a Picture of how it looks with the gel sock with the socket.) The current leg I have is the most advance i have had (think total i have had 20 Legs in my life)

My brother is a BN & when he put his liner on. There is a screw on the bottom & when he puts his leg in his leg u can hear it clicking each time his leg is getting closer to the bottom of his prosthetic. Locks it in 😁 how long have u been a amputee? Have u ever tried that kind of leg I was talking about?

Are those sleeves breathable Jo? Because I’m an AK, there’s no sleeve as a part of my socket and having to wear something on top of a liner, that doesn’t breathe, sounds less than ideal to me. Currently I wear a liner (and socks) along with a silicone ring for added suction underneath the socket.

I am glad that I am walking and without pain much of the time 90% but being 72 and walking since I was 68 and only an occasional phantom pain. I know that I am lucky but it still sucks. Everting is so much more difficult and I am not complaining, just saying. I see you hop and have a younger friend that does the same. This would be totally impossible for me.

Why the fuck are those foot liners so expensive? It is sad how some people are getting filthy rich from the suffering of others. Anyway, you are an extremely brave individual and I am sure your videos serve as an inspiration for many other amputees. I, myself am considering amputation of my foot due to constant pain I've been living with since 2012, but perhaps would wait a few more years in hopes of more advanced prosthetics becoming available. Had my second attempt of ankle fusion a month ago. Cheers!

Holes in the sleeve or the liner, kneeling is bad, I’m tight in the beginning of the day after noon I put a 3 ply sock on as my stump shrinks it takes about 15 minutes for my vacuum to build fully...the farting noise is bad as it usually indicates a leak.....I’m a bka since 2018

I was thinking that a small led flashlight would be helpful to find small holes. Sit in a low light room with small pieces of tape handy to mark the hole(s), slip you hand with the flashlight inside the sleeve, and look for any light that might shine through, mark the spot with tape.

Kevin Ellis Modern modern glues are actually really similar - super glue is N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, and the more recent stuff is 2-octylcyanoacrylate with some plasticizing polymers to help increase flexibility (especially for internal use IIRC and not a doctor, just love them)

You do not have to take off you leg or shoe. Tell them for medical reasons your shoes dont come off. They will instead to a pat down and swab you leg. You can also get a wheelchair escort thru the airport if walking for long distance will bother you.
