My Quad-Motor Electric Go-Kart Is Finally Up and Running

A Unique Electric Go-Kart
Electric go-karts are not new, but a go-kart with an electric motor on each wheel is a rare find. After addressing my budget-friendly kart suspension, I got the go-kart moving under its own power. Spoiler alert: it’s a beast.
I removed the suspension and used laser-cut tubes from Oshcut to attach the wheels directly to the chassis. The new steering system is stronger than before. Finally, I attached the motors, which required careful installation due to differing widths in the front and rear axles.
The Electric Drivetrain
Power electronics have continuous and burst ratings. My hub motors are rated for 2.5 kilowatts of continuous power at 52 amps and 48 volts. With adjustments, the setup could potentially reach a peak of 20 kW (26.8 hp).
However, my 2 kWh module from an Audi Q5 PHEV can’t provide the 400 amps necessary for peak output with the quad motor setup. Even so, the kart is already fast, with impressive torque and speed.
Driving Experience
Despite its weight (177 pounds), the driving experience is exhilarating. The go-kart offers car-like sensations even without suspension, making it a thrilling ride.
Given the weight, I don't want to add more battery power. Instead, I'll switch battery chemistries to unlock the full potential of the rear-wheel-drive configuration. Then, we'll explore the all-wheel-drive battery in future episodes.
