FEARLESSY breaking down barriers, Anja Christoffersen was born with VACTERL Association - an acronym that stands for vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheal, oesophageal, renal and limb. It’s a collection of birth defects that have caused Anja to have over 35 surgeries and 150 hospital admissions in her life, including emergency surgery on her food and air pipes, bowel and bladder when she was only an infant. Her condition meant she had to learn a totally different way of life, and that's exactly what she did. But she didn't stop there, ever inspiring and continuously trying to help those who need her, the model, author, CEO and public speaker set up Champion Health Agency, a talent agency helping people turn their lived experiences into careers - and with that growing a base of individuals that all help to inspire the current and next generation. Anja said: "Realising that I wasn't alone is one of my huge motivations for sharing my story." She added: "I'm incredibly passionate because I think it gives a great opportunity to show to a mainstream audience representation of minority groups. I think that it has such great value, especially to young people and children to see themselves represented in media, that they can do it too, and that there are people like them that are successful."

People have different strength limits. What is minor problem for me could be a major for somebody else. The longer I live the happier I am but at the same time the fact I have limited time seems to bother me less and less. And I would not like to be alive without full independence etc. No way. That is all I know. Life is a gift but seriously for some it's more like a nightmare.

Her mother is phenomenal! As someone with medical conditions, I can relate to her young wisdom of "I can't wait until I'm well to do things, so I just need to get on and do them." If I'm home, I'm sick, if I'm out I'm sick. So I might as well do a few things. Though it's drastically harder with medical issues and not feasible for everyone due to physical, mental, and financial challenges. Even something like watching/listening to videos to virtually travel can be an okay option and a relatively accessible one as a way to explore the world for example.

Yay - absolutely love her attitude! On my way to make my own story: 2 1/2 years ago I went from being a physically fit nurse to needing a wheelchair within moments. I am still catching up and setting up my life with all the support I now need. My goal is to be the first nurse in Germany to work in a power chair! Of course I unfortunately can’t do bedside work anymore. But I love my job so much - so at the moment I am looking at possibilities to work for a few hours at hospitals or other organizations in administration and organization, patient management. I most definitely still can do that! So thank you for putting your story out there. It makes me more determined to move on - even though many doctors told me that I would not be able to work again.

I hope you can work out an ideal work situation. Is telehealth an option for you? In the US there were legal changes due to the pandemic to make it more feasible, though prescription writing is limited to only certain medical professionals, so it can be harder for most nurses. A power chair sounds like a great idea!!

My husband and I met because we both were born with VACTERL. He and Anja are very similar and have compared scars, lol. So, I was born with two kidneys but my husband was born with one with multiple ureters. You have a ureter that doesn't go anywhere? Does it end in a blind pouch? I really don't know much about the renal aspect of VACTERL, but your kidney issues are one of our letters, even if you might not be considered to have VACTERL. Bodies are interesting! I'm sorry it had such a horrible effect on your marriage.

So beautiful! And such a blessing to this world to have such strong, loving, and inspirational women such as you and your mother! Bc you show other's that no matter who/what you may or may not be/have based on society's "norms" you're still just as equal as everyone else and your mother knew that and still chose to birth and raise you as you deserved!!! Instead of considering you as "not" human and/or with "unworthy" health issues and stolen your right to life!!! I applaud you both for your amazing bravery, love and inspiration for choosing life, and showing the world how beautiful you are, bc of who you are!! God bless 🙏❤️😍

Wow what a beautiful positive young lady… all those surgeries are enough to bring you down, it’s always a worry that you won’t wake up again. I know that since I have had my children, every time I go down for surgery I make a point of saying out loud to anyone in that anti room off of the theatre where they prep you and the anaesthetic is given, I tell them to note that my lasts words before the anaesthesia kicks that tell just in case I don’t make it back that I love them both so much and I am sorry to leave them so soon, and then I won’t speak another word… my love for my children is my last words. I can’t imagine the the heart ache and soul searching her parents have gone through. The phrase inspirational is used way too much but this young lady truly is. I wish her a long and happy life and may be blessed with children either from her own body or another way.?

My ex husband was born with an incomplete midline. He was open from the chest to the pubic bone, and all of his insides were on the outside. He had no bladder, and no rectum. It also turned out that he was sterile. He never got a genetic test done (this was 50 years ago) but we suspect he may have also had Klinefelter's Syndrome. He's had numerous surgeries, and is actually the first person with his condition to have lived as long as he has. Shout out to Dr. Ng at Seattle Children's Hospital!
